I strongly suggest getting yourself over to the local cinema to see Serenity this weekend. I saw an advance screening in May. Let me tell you... BEST. MOVIE. EVER.*

* - Well, best scifi movie of the year, anyway. It deserves your $10 and two hours. You won't regret it!

Go!

Ashen

This isn't out in the UK for another week, but I'm definately out to see it when it gets here.

Gorram stupid staggered release dates.
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Vince Twelve

Gorram Japan, denying this Browncoat his long-awaited treat.

Ashen

It's a Firefly thing.
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Vince Twelve

Yeah, non-cool people wouldn't understand...

Ashen

Hah!
Take THAT, most of the world!

Teach you to miss one of the best TV shows ever.
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Disco

I'm seeing it twice today :D. Everyone please see it.. if Universal makes their $50 million back we can get parts 2 and 3, dǒng ma?

Now let's go be bad guys :).

It's not our fault Firefly only got shown for eight seconds. Sci Fi is re-releasing it, though. Maybe, as was the case with Stargate, they will get all the nice little license thingies and be able to resurrect it...

So, what's "the thing" with this movie? I just saw the trailer, looked like your average action flick, only set in space.

It's based on one of the best sci-fi shows ever that got cancelled after only 13 episodes because Fox put it in a time slot that gets watched less than my webpage.  The show is witty and charming as hell.  Not to mention fun, exciting, and imaginative.  The characters just plain rock.

The fans of this show are going to see the movie no matter what, so the trailers are geared at getting your average action-flick-Joe into the seats.

And yes, there's lots of talk about more films in the series IF the movie performs well.  So... GO!

Ashen

There isn't really a "the thing". There're lots of things. The writing, the characters, the cast, the stories, the background details ... not that I can speak from the film as such, so I guess it helps if you're a massive fan of Firefly, the criminally short lived series it's spawned from.
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Darth Mandarb

I thought I was the only one who watched the show ...

I too was pissed when they cancelled the show.  I think it was just a few years ahead of it's time.  People just weren't ready for a show with that much substance.

I will be seeing the movie as soon as is possible.

Ashen

Sudden thought:
Anyone else in the North West UK interested in this? If so, do you fancy arranging an AGS outing to go see?
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Firefly was aired in the Netherlands. Not much of a hit.
The few episodes I saw were better than every SW or ST thing I've seen in decades.

But can't compete with Cowboy Bebop or Irresponsible Captain Tylor.

Part of the problem was that Fox aired them out of sequence, and gave them a shitty time block. Kind of like what they did to Wonderfalls, which was also an awesome show. But considering it was one of Joss Whedon's shows, they should have known that it would mass a bigger audience given time (He's the one who wrote Buffy and Angel). I was going to see the movie today, but through lack of time, and tiredness, I shall wait till sometime this week. From what I gathered, if you watched the shows, and are a big fan, then you should have no problems getting into the movie. If  you didn't watch the movie, it's still a rather good movie.

I believe they're hoping to relaunch the series. Fox wouldn't sell Sci-fi the rights to make more episodes, which is why they're making the movies. I was suprised to see the whole cast was back, and can't wait to see the movie in theatres.

Kinoko

Wow, I've never even heard of it. Maybe they never aired it in Australia at all. Can I download episodes anywhere?

Firefly as a television series will most likely not resume production. If my memory serves, one of the conditions of Universal securing the rights to a Firefly movie was that the property cannot be produced for TV again :'(. Also, I believe that Mutant Enemy is in a lapse, not entirely dissolved, so that would need to be restaffed before production on any Joss show can begin.

I'm still hoping for a Faith spinoff, forget the Spike tv movie already  >:(.

Las Naranjas

Kinoko - They didn't even decide to show it on Foxtel until recently due to the release of the film.

Nine, Seven and Ten are too uncreative to buy a show unless it's a huge hit in the US.

Saw it Saturday.. LOVED it.  I too was a big fan of Firefly, and greatly mourned it's premature cancellation.  But, I bought the dvds and subquently got quite a few of my friends hooked on it.  It helps that it's made by Joss Whedon, who is (in my opinion) the most talented movie/television writer out there.

And as others have said, the film is much more than just another sci-fi flick.  The character development is suberb, the writing is sharp and witty... it is very well done.  No one else has ever made a sci-fi story with Western tidbits... it's very original.

What else could you expect from the guy that brought us Buffy and Angel?
