First game sprites

Me and my buddy have started making a new game. It's gonna be in 800 x 600. Here's the first bg and the main character. The bg will be animated with rain falling down.

What do you think?

The top of the wall should not be visible with that perspective. Also, the floor is also a bit too shiny, specially for plain wet concrete. The BG is a bit empty as well. The static rain will look funny, even if you animate rain on top of it.

About the character- the only thing I can see to fix is the knees. They seem a bit low. Also, the fellow seems to be tilting towards his right.

Ok, thanks. But I don't understand what you mean with "the wall should not be visible with that perspective". The wall sure has to continue up to the top of the screen... or? We are aware of the emptiness in the scene. Later, we will add som objects, like crates, barrels and maybe a trashcan.

About the rain: Any advice how can we make it look less shiny? Add some noise?

I meant the top of the wall. That is what I assume the dark bar of colour over the wall on the left is. Unless the top of the wall was sloping, it should not be visible.

Aha! Now I get it! I thought that you meant the right wall. No, that's not the top of the wall, rather some kind of rounded edge.

This doesn't seem like the top of the wall to me.

Also, taking artist's overall visible skill into account, I doubt that so stupid mistake was made.

Anyway...

* The floor/ground should have at least as much detail/noise as the building wall has. The shine gives full effect of a flood at the moment. So unless your character won't be swimming in this room, do something.

* The lamp looks too weak to me. The light from it could also lit the rightmost wall a bit.

That's odd ... I actually thought the ground looked really good!  Like really wet/slick cement.  The only problem I have with it is with it being that reflective the character must reflect as well ... which can be tricky.

It's VERY dark on my screen ... very hard to see some of the detail.  But I like it, overall.

The sprite looks nice enough.  Maybe too many colors (shading) which'll make animating him difficult.  But he looks stylized.

I will disagree with the above statments (not Darhts, though). I find this BG fine. Maybe a bit dark, but just fine. The perspective is fine, The walls are fine. Logic wise how could so much water get into a buliding. That's a problem but it looks ok. It looks perfect.

Another thought thayt crossed my mind is that I would like the windows a bit "foggy", like the inside of a building. Hot on the inside cold on the outside...

But I like it...

The character is just fine. True his knees need a little something and his mouth and the left side is weird. Can't be more specific...

PS. This looks like an inside of a building. But I'm not so sure, now that  I take a close rook at it. The water piep/drain thing...

But it loks like an inside of a building. At lesat my first thought.Once you add items trashbins and stuff it will change that, no doubt.

coming on well just a few things though:

The top of the wall, as mentioned, isn't right.

the mindow in the top right is out of perspective too, use the line where the building meets the floor as a reference.

The character looks good, but good luck animating something that detailled. :)

Besides that i like it, nice mood.

I just wanted to say that I like them both.
The screen has a nice dark mood to it and the character has a great personality.
I hope you'll finish the game.

Just great, I like 'em both. The only thing that looks off is window, as I said 'looks' it might be just me.

First of all, thanks for all comments. I agree that the window's perspective is kind of weird, will correct that. By the way, is there any way to make a reflection or a shadow of the character while he is moving around?

Just I wild guess: If you have a second sprite, folowing the character. The second sprite can be the shadow, or the reflection depending on where he's standing...

I don't know if this will work in AGS. Better wait for someon more experienced to tell you...

GOOD Art the reflections the styling character (agree with babar the knees are too low) and the left arm looks a little longer than the right ? I dunno it looks like that to me. And his legs look a little too small for the upper torso.

The window is really wierd as mentioned above.

Other than that I really like the work WOW!  Reminds me a little of sin city :)

On the idea of reflection I think you should have to create a new character sprite for these specific "glossy" or "wet" textured floors. The character sprite should be the character and then the "shadow" or "reflection" included.

But thats just a guess like Nik said wait for someone more experienced to answer that! :)

Nice atmosphere!
Aside from what has already been mentioned:
- there's a lot of "wasted" (featureless) space
- the buildings in the background are very regular in size and close together
- the windows in those buildings are very IRregular
- the doorframe probably shouldn't be made of the same material as the wall
- the light is too low - it wouldn't be at the same level as the top of the door
- the drainpipe should be parallel to the edge of the wall
- the step up into the building should be slightly taller, so that water draining off the building doesn't flow over it
- the window break isn't believable - there would be cracks across the pane
- presumably the door is going to be an object
- how about water coming out of the drainpipe?
- and some animated rings where water hits the concrete?
