This is my first try with AGS. ;D In fact it's my first game ever.Ã,  I've had no experience with script nor do I have any artistic tallent.Ã,  This game was for my own training and fun.Ã,  Please try it out and at least tell me if you think it's funny.

Sorry, it's the most awful AGS... thing I've ever played.
And how did you pass registration test? The thread doesn't belong here!

I really kick ass.

Also, you can't get past the screen with the alien.

EDIT:  Yea, its just some random thing that happened to me.  Oh Well.

bigrd32

I don't wand to argue, but I just "played" it and it is very possible to get past the screen with the alien.

p.s.  sorry I waisted your time. :-[

Increator, if you don't know how to give crit, you don't belong in the crits lounge...

I can't download the file since freewebs tells me some of my settings are stopping it from being downloaded.

Hmm... If it is critics you want...

First of all, you made a game with AGS. Very good. It even seems to have a plot or an idea of some sort. Good.

But then... (this is just my personal point of view.)

- The language, first of all, annoys me greatly. The dialogue structures are a bit too simple and the dialogs seem to lack the point.
- The graphics seem mostly ripped, which I resent, since you have done a poor job in utilising them.
- I didn't find any use for most of the inventory items, which made them completely pointless.

Do note that I did not complete it, if that is possible as I got the impression that this is still in progress...
I used to make games but then I took an IRC in the knee.

Thank you for hostility... once again. Maybe it is so. But find a way to download this and consider again.

And... hey, is it YOUR sprite getting mocked in there?

Hell, I can even mirror this:

EDIT: sorry, didn't see inc's mirror...

...

Damn yous.

I was just mirroring it, as we know what freewebs is when it comes to file downloads ¬_¬

At least you have an understanding of using dialogs. That is something i haven't even attempted.  You have to start somewhere, even if it means a sub-par game. We all have to learn eventually.  Not quite Game of the Month material, but heck, you're learning to use the AGS engine.

bigrd32

Wow!!! An uplifting reply.  Thanks for at least giving me some credit.  Like I said...it was for learning and fun for me.  It is possible to complete the game and use all of the objects.

Squinky

Do we have enough mirrors yet?

Anyway, Eric will always swoop down to defend the underdog...

But Increator, if I had to label your crit, I would label it as a temporary case of asshole. It didn't really help anything. He didn't release this in the completed games section, he put it in here, prolly because he knew it needed a little more...

But then again I haven't downloaded it yet...

This is sort of a borderline case for Critics Lounge, really.  The game itself seems more as an exercise to play around with the different options of ags rather than a truly serious effort to make a complete game.  If I'm wrong I apologize, but that's the feeling I get from wandering through and just picking up everything not nailed down.  As for the dialogs (try to understand that I am not easily amused when I say this) I found them to be rather standard and I don't imagine you having spent a considerable time working on them or this game.

This is not meant to disturb or discourage you in any way, my point is just that ideally you probably should put more effort forth before releasing something for public feedback.  My recommendation is that you revisit this and draw some or all of the art yourself so that it all matches one style and add a more interesting story.

MrColossal

Increator: compare your response to Prog's or Ishmael. My sprite didn't get mocked at all, it's a game and I gave it out freely, I don't think bigrd32 even knows who I am.

And I don't understand your "... once again" comment. You wrote no crit what so ever and I said it didn't belong there. You're the one that was hostile.

bigrd32:
For a test game it's fine. Not really something to release on the internet, hehe. But the main thing I can suggest to do is keep these rooms and try other things, just add in a more complex cutscene, it doesn't have to make sense but you'll learn how to do it. Pick a scripting tutorial, something low level, and add it into one of the rooms just to get a feel for scripting.

I don't know if this really belongs in the crit lounge but I don't know where to move it so I'll just leave it here.

I didn't realize I would cause this much fuss.  I'm sorry for any wasted time.  I have downloaded  Graphics Gale and The Gimp and I've found tuts for them.  I'll make sure I have something worth showing before I emberass myself again.  Thanks for all the feedback.

I even... agree. But bgird32 should have posted *before* he started to assemble graphics into AGS. Well, being a newbie, he - of course - didn't have a clue.
My -real- crits match 100% Ishmael's, and there's nothing more to say than "try harder".

But being a resident in CL since 2003 and hearing
QuoteIncreator, if you don't know how to give crit, you don't belong in the crits lounge...

Really insults me.  >:(

and..

QuoteAnd I don't understand your "... once again" comment

Please take time to browse your message history, Eric. Whenever you're answering me in discussion/thread/etc, nothing good's around.

MrColossal

You've been here for a long time giving crit, when you post something unhelpful and in my opinion extremely useless like that am I not suppose to call you on it because you've given helpful advice in the past?

I just did a search for posts started by MrColossal with the words Increator in the title, I'm not going through my entire post history for this... You have a problem with me, PM me and tell it to me. You think I'm following you around and picking on you, then you're very much mistaken.

bigrd32: Don't worry about it, it doesn't really matter, make something else and feel free to post in the CL again, you seem to be well on your way to learning AGS, congratulations and good luck.

It's not a horrible attempt to just play around with options.  It's quite enough to tweak a bit so that you can see what you can do better, and then go on to a short game or one-room game.

The graphics are a bit painful, but you're aware of that since you do a bit of self-mockery in the dialogue.  The dialogue has its good moments, but the drug references and slang become tiresome pretty quickly.  Poking fun at your own screens and simple puzzles works for a mess-around game, but I'd rather see something done where these elements are fixed instead.

The first screen I started on had psychedelic colors.  I'm assuming that this is a palette problem.  You could change it to a 16-bit game, but with the small amount of colors, there's little reason to.  For 256-color games, keep the character palette/room palette in mind.

You seem to have gone through the beginning segments of the tutorial as well as searching around enough to hit Kafka's page, so you might just want to figure out how to do the same things better.

No reason to be horribly embarassed, it's just that most people don't post their initial attempts at screwing around with AGS.  If you'd posted something like:
This was my first attempt at messing around with AGS, and I was wondering how I can improve A, B or C . . . then you'd likely get more helpful responses.

Honestly, disregarding the graphics, I've seen countless submissions that were far worse as far as time investment and effort goes.  It seems you actually invested some time in this, just work on polishing the 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) attempt a bit before you put yourself out there.

bigrd32

Thanks YakSpit.  That was very reassuring. :)

Increator:

Upon reading this thread (and no I did not download the game first) I formed almost the same words in my head in response to your critique.  Your response had much to do with why I decided not to download immediately.

Very assholish.  So be careful... someone might even post really bad stuff in the future just to draw out your criticism.  ;)
