Okay I have the following problem and can't figure out what to do.

Today I did a restoration to an earlier point, to a very early point. I mean I took the computer back to the 1st of November. After waiting for around 3 hours, the restoration was 'done' and I was informed after shutting down and turned on again, that the restoration was not succesful becuase of the lack of disk space (!) The thing is that I had around 50 Gb of disk space!

Anyway I went to my computer and saw the properties of the C drive. To my surprise there were 200 Mb left... So I go in the C drive and see the properties of c:/. And it shows 95 Gb...

Where are the other 50 Gb? I suspect of course that while resotring it copied some things... and actually becuase I'm using large folders with smaples (2 folders to be exact one of 20Gb and another of 40!) that I assume would be enough to fill the space up immediately!

The thing is that I can't find the missing 50 Gb! I searched, I searched by size, by date, hidden and not hidden, system and still nothing...

Please help me...

EDIT: Never mind, problem solved, although I'm not sure how...

I tried to check the hard disk for errors, and the space just reappeard... Have no idea what happened. But let this be a lesson, don't do restorations unless completly necessary!

I leave the above post as a discussion point (if there is one...) Mods feel free to delete, move, lock, whatever...

I highly suggest you:

a) Get Spybot and AdAware if you don't have them already and run them
b) Get O&O Defrag (or something else that's really good at defragmenting, like DiskKeeper)
c) Clear out your temp folder
d) Clear out your temporary internet files
e) Check add/remove programs for wanton/useless programs and destroy them with prejudice

f) Do not ignore this advice simply because the problem appears to be solved.
g) Get F-Prot or Kaspersky Antivirus and run it just in case

i remember someting similar happening to me. i had a full install of myst 4 on my computer, which was around 10gb (can't remember). but i restored to a date before i installed myst 4, so it showed myst 4 wasn't installed, but it took up the space.

Thanks progz....

I actually have adaware and have defragmented the hard disk last week (and it need it that...)

As for the temp folders I will check them, and also try another virus check apart from Norton (which for some reason I don't like much...dunno)

everytime i install Norton Systemworks, which includes anti-virus, something usually goes horribly wrong and i end up having to do a re-format, or in the case of another older pc i setup recently in which the install failed i had to go through my entire registry and delete any reference to it.
but yeh, a disk scan can usually solve the mystery of missing space, especially on FAT32 drives, disk damage can also cause windows to report more free space available than there is.

That's what happened to my computer once! I had to get an entirely new one.
Hmmm, if only I had just checked the hard disc for errors too.

Tell me you're talking about a new hard disk and not a new computer!
