I want to play an MMO

But I don't know which one to play. I don't really want to play WOW because all my friends are level 30 million billion and know everything about the game including things that not even god himself knows, probably. Maybe. And all my friends will laugh at me because I'm a massive n00b.

What are you guys playing, and why, teh etc.

I'm playing WoW. All my friends were level 40 billion also, and they left about a month after I joined, but the community on it is still freaking awesome. If you join an MMO that your friends aren't playing whats the difference between that and one where they can chat with you and help you out, even if they are ultra high levels.

I think WoW is great.

Avoid City of Heroes and Star Wars galaxies at ALL costs, IMO the two worst MMO's. City of Heroes is probably the worst game I think i've ever played in my life, but I'm sure others will disagree.

Guild Wars is good because it aer free and everyone is all on one huge server, so you don't have to worry about not being with friends.

Final Fantasy has a terrible control system, but looks perdy and has a nice sound track, but it's final fantasy so loses major points. (again people will probably disagree).

Anarchy Online is free nowadays because noone plays it due to it being old and outdated. I got a free copy with PC Gamer a while back.

A lot of my friends play dark ages of camelot but i don't know what it's like. Apparently evem if you dont play the game you get xp. Like you stay logged out for a week and you get a level. :/ bizzare.

I still think WoW is the best option until Pirates of the Burning Sea comes out or even the Star Trek one in 2008.

Go here for help choosing - http://www.mmorpg.com/ seems pretty useful. I just go there for infor about Pirates and Star Trek :/

i'd love to play EVE Online because it's just a stunning looking game. don't have the cash for the monthly subscription though.
when they come out i'd like to give Auto Assault (sort of like mad max meets transformers meets gta) and that Star Trek one a try. but really, there are too many MMOs out there and being made, James Cameron is working on one based on his new movie for crying out loud.

Star Wars Galaxies was fun, but i don't recommend playing it because it's so broken

WoW is no fun. I realised this after playing for two months, and i've owned it since it came out ¬¬

Yeah Auto Assault looks awesome! Soo good, can't wait to play!

For the more creative approach, get some friends into your house and grab a few tabletop roleplaying books, such as WOD (world of darkness, not warcraft)

Oooookay.... *cracks fingers*

First of all, I'd recommend www.gameogre.com as they pretty much have details on EVERY Online RPG game going, and ratings. Lovely little site for those of you who can't stand searching for ages on Google.

Now onto the list!

Rich Gits:
World Of Warcraft: Disgusting game. Sure, it's great and all, until you encounter the leet speakers, noob callers, lamers who either do it because their around the mental age of four or because they hide behind AOL. Gives us honest AOLers a bad name  :P

EQ 2: Again. Ew.

Eve Online: Personal Favorite, godly game. Not only is the player base full of decent people (apparently one guy who got shot down got apologised to by the pirate!), it is just one of those games where you can shut it down and go off and do something else, come back and play again, and then you realise you've been playing it for three years. (I don't own the game though... *sniff*)

Poor gits:
Guild Wars: Probably the best "free" MMORPGs. It's not really free - obviously as you have to buy the game - but no monthly subscription is good for those on tight budgets.

Runescape: If you want a good starter MMORPG, try this. Lovely game, decent people, easy to play. Not only is is 100% free, it's premium service is £4 a month. Sooooo many quests, items and other assorted goodness that member (p2p'ers) characters usually look pretty darn unique.

Personally, I'd recommend RS if your looking for a standard RPG. If your looking for something a little different, EVE online is ace. If your one of those poor gits without BB (aka Me) their both still great as both EVE and RS rarely suffer from HUGE lag.

(By the way, how much you intending to pay a month? It'd help narrow the list...)

I've never played a commericial MMORPG game yet, but I've played a lot of the free ones off the net (Thang, Knight online, Runescape, Anarchy online etc) and I find them all terribly boring, and the people playing always annoy me.

I am tempted to give guild wars a try, as I would like to LIKE an MMORPG and get stuck into one. But I don;t want to get a game with monthly fee's as I don't play games often enough to justify it.

But for now, I'm trying to be patient for the offline game Oblivion to come out 2mrw. OHMYGODIMUSTHAVETHISGAMENOW!! and all that.

Disney's Toontown Online!
Actually, I HAVE worked on a couple of finished games. They just weren't made in AGS.

I've played City of Heroes off and on. It is really a fun game and well put together, better than some of the others out there. That said, it has no economy, it has basically only fighting and missions. But still, top rate. Somewhere around the range of 15 american bucks a month, game cards are available for it if you don't have a credit card.

I've played Ragnorak online, which apealed to me because of it's low res super nintendo styled graphics. It wasn't much per month (like $12 USD) and you can sign up to get 15 days free if you want to try it out. It was a pretty fun game, the biggest problem being all the "bots" automated characters every where you turn that would walk up and start fighting your monster or grab your loot. Also, people didn't seem to be very social.

I played Anarchy Online a bit when Yakspit posted about it, but really, it is a dying game. Try it out only if you have more time than you need.

I am currently playing a free game called FLYFF. A lot of the players on the game that I have met have come over from WOW and say it compares. It has everything I would expect from a pay game, except they don't charge monthly fees. You can buy stuff like outfits and crap for your character from their shop, but you are never required to put any money into the game at all. It has kinda cutsey graphics (although high quality) and the standard medievel class selections.
