Here are some sprites of my magical spaceman using some kind of welding torch, any critque would be welcomed. Oh and they were drawn in Deluxe Paint Version 4.

Don't have any crits on the character design - looks excellent - I hope you can pull off this style for the rest of the project.

For the torch, it would be good if you could keep the shape consistent.

And for the welding frame, I'd expect the welding spot to be much brighter - a saturated white in the center - and the highlight around the character to be brighter too and all around the lit edge.

I noticed when painting over that there's a very light eye pixel. I would lose that or make it black.

(Note: you can use width=x height=y tags when posting an image to double it in size. Makes it easier to paint over.)

That's simple and cool, and Steve made a very good edit.

Maybe it's just me, but I think he kinda looks like a cartoony dog's head seen in profileÃ,  - but maybe he's supposed to :D

MarVelo

Very nice. I liike it a lot. Maybe try to make the oxygen pack on his back more boxy and sticking out.

DutchMarco

* He needs feet.
* The 3rd frame is the only one where his legs show any z-order perspective. Also the rest of the body needs more shading. Where's his left arm?
* Make the backpack stand off his back, instead of being ust a brown piece of cloth sewn to his space suit.
* His helmet now looks as if it's one with the suit; instead, make it look as if he can take it off. After all, he needs _any_ way of getting into and out of the suit! :D

It looks nice but to make it look good, you might have to study space suit detailing a bit more. Maybe the www.nasa.gov or www.esa.org (what the Euro Space Agency's website's exact URL?) websites can give you good pics to show some detailing, shading etc.

BTW come to think of it, maybe some patches to show which country/agency he's from might help. I believe most astronauts have their national or organisational flags patched onto their suits.

very good style- reminds me of the old humongous entertainment games I played when I was younger.
I'm composing the music for this game:

Hm, I think there is lots to be done, frankly.

The character has no posture, and no proper form. You need to define shapes and forms by adding either fine lines or shades.
You need to work on details. The character now is mostly two big squares of red. His backpack is bound to have more details than that.
His edges are rough and uneven. Even if it must be aliased, you can still make smoother lines if you just gave it some time.

Haddas

I like the style. It's either demented or cute.

No Haddas, but thanks SteveMcCrea for your constructive help. Andail I am using the constraints of a fixed pallete. So there's only a certian amount detail that can be used. As for the posture, he is in space after all. Oh did I mention he hasn't got any bones.

lo_res_man

NO BONES!? :o the how can he have legs?!

Just for the record, real spacesuits are white (to reflect infrared rays). Those orange suits are STS (Space Shuttle) pressure suits, used for launch and reentry. Their purpose is to protect the astronauts should cabin pressure be unstable. But they can't be used outside the ship. (If you've ever seen an orange space suit, it was surely in a VERY bad pseudo-sci-fi movie).

Having said that, you have full right to make your spacesuit any color you like Ã, ;)

... I'll be pushing this too far I guess, but: if he's in zero-g, then the sparks should not fall downwards...

Obi

Luckily VERY bad pseudo-sci-fi is the look I'm going for. I'm not really trying to make it as fact based (such as the correct colour for a space suit/re-entry suit) as it is Science Fiction.

Mad

maybe you could try something like this for more detail:

lo_res_man

I have an idea for him to make him look all old school sci-fi fi BAD( like those old pulp rag covers). Give him a fishbowl helmet, and bellow joints in all the right places. it will, combined with the colour, kick up the cheese factor.

I like this, it's much more like a character now than like a blob of orange. Maybe reshape the helmet a bit, it looks a bit tall and bulbous now.

The best thing is, no colours were added so the pallette hasn't changed.

Here you go, all the same colors are used.

1.  Used the palette to add more shades
2.  Added a communications aerial to his backpack to make it look more whacky sci-fi
3.  Gave the torch a cord
4.  Showed his other arm shielding his eyes (a glass helmet offers no protection from the intense light of a welding torch).
5.  Added some details to the suit.

It's a nice style so I didn't want to alter it too much.

SteveMcCrea: Thanks for the tips on the lighting.
Mad: I LOVE this paintover, it keeps the style of my sprite but makes it much better.
ProgZmax: I also like this paintover, but somehow it seems to loose abit of it's original style.
A blend of all three will make this sprite look awesome.
Thanks to all
