How do you create a day of the tentacle game with multiple playable characters?

The title says it all. I want to create a game where you can change between characters all with a different  inventory. What do I do?

That's in the BFAQ.
Different characters have their own inventories by default, all you need to do is switch between them.
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.
