Greek sports have been getting very interesting last few years. I saw them win Euro Cup a few years back against Portugal so I hope to see them win again in basketball. Keep it up Greeks.

I can certianly believe that ;D

Timosity

It's always good to see sports getting more competitive worldwide, the game would never progress if the USA kept winning.

From some memory, was basketball derived from some ancient Greek sport?

You've got to get used.

Everything comes from ancient greeks ;D ;D

Actually I have no idea, but I was under the impression that some American tribe (Maya or something) had a simmilar sport...

Kind of makes a joke out of the NBA and their so-called "World Champions." Of course, one might argue that the NBA was kind of a joke to begin with.

I wonder if this means we can get away with cutting down on some of their over-priced salaries?

Never.  And If Michael Jordan wasn't 100 he would've won SINGLE-HANDED...And with one hand, too!  :=

Note:  I dislike sports so this news does not affect me.

MashPotato

Am I the only basketball fan here? O_o  Well actually, I wasn't really watching the World Championships, but I'm a NBA fan, and loves me my Toronto Raptors (no really!  Don't laugh ^_^)

Anyway, off the top of my head... basketball was invented by John Naismith (a Canadian guy) who developed the sport for the YMCA.  The YMCA which wanted an active sport that could be played indoors, so Naismith took the characteristics of popular sports and tried to make a game that would be fun, yet would not be conducive to getting injured.  It was pretty different at first, as only passing was allowed (dribbling came later), and the nets were famously made from peach baskets.
Yup, I'm an encyclopedia of useless knowledge ^_^

Domino

I wonder how Yanni feels about this?? Yanni is awesome, but he is from Greece and now resides in the US.

sorry if this post makes no sense.

We're in the final as well... It sucks. Now seems that you lift a stone and a "lifetime basketball fan" appears. It reveils hypocrisy (sp?) and a stupid patriotism that I can't stand. I feel sorry for the real basketball fans.  :-\
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

So, turns out he invented netball, and from that was derived basketball.

Anarcho

I do believe it's very similar to a game played by the Mayans or the Incans...you know, the one where they kill the losers after the game is over.

Nacho

Aztecs or Mayans, but definetelly not Incas, who lived in Peru. Inca was just the name of the King, anyway, it would be like calling the British, the "Queens".  :)

No Petter... They are commonly called Incas, but if you were an inhabitant of Peru, and said, in that period, "I am an Inca" you should have got your head chopped by claiming the kingdom. The empire was called "Inca Empire" as the Egypt Empire could have been called "Tutmosis Empire" but the average peruvian was not an Inca. The servitude was such that they were even called "the people of Inca", but not in the sense of "Inca people" but "The people who belongs to the Inca", or to the King.

Anyway, I don't mind... We know what we talking about what saying Incas, but a bit of culture is good ^_^.

In five years laughter will be obsolete and officially replaced by the acronym "lol".
