SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.

Didn't come off as the biggest surprise, but this really sucks.

That's too bad. I used to enjoy watching his show once upon a time.

Ya, I don't like to hear about anyone dying but the guy's had a documented history of taunting animals to see what they'll do.  He probably was messing with the stingray and really pissed it off ;|.

[Cameron]

I agree with Prog. He also had a habit of making Australians look like retards. Must say I honestly hated his shows  :P

I always thought it would happen, but now that it has, I'm kind of shocked. It wasn't even something crazy, like getting swallowed by a snake or something.

Timosity

Yeah, very sad, It was only a matter of time before something like this happened to him, but if anyone was aware of the dangers of most animals, it was him, However animals are unpredictable.

The worst part is leaving behind his wife and 2 young children, it will be a sad time for them.

But he has done more than just make documentaries, he's poured his massive earnings into world conservation, charities etc and what he's done will live on.

A very rare generous genuine person, with a lot of character, he will be missed, RIP

Wow, I just heard and was on my way to consider posting a thread about it.  This is terribly sad, I feel for his kids and wife.

A stingray strike to the chest, what a way to go.

Nacho

Oh, poor guy... a pitty, I liked his show...  :(
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

[Cameron]

One thing though, he's an animal expert, how'd he manage to dive ONTO a stingray?

Nacho

Well, I guess he made a mistake...

Therefore he deserved to die, no? let's make fun of the stupid guy because [Cameron] does not like him! Weeeh!

:P

Sea is imprevissible... Expert divers die everyday. I don't think that the appropiate homage to them is saying "How did they manage to do that?".

Anyway... this is a thread about a person who died. You can say nice things to those who care, or, if not able to, shut the fuck up, IMO.
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

No report i have seen has said he dived onto the stingray.

But it is sad. And i'm sure he will be sadly missed.

Nacho, a shiteload of people die every day, I personally don't know Steve Irwin, and I'm sure most people here don't. Now I dont see why you should defend him, even though I wasnt attacking him. And where he was has the clearest water, and you could see the stringrays in it. All I was wondering was that considering his expertise, how he managed to do it, considering any one else near that water would realise where the stingrays are. Also, I dont see why famous people should get so much fuss in comparison to anyone else, sure he died and that really sucked, but if he was anyone else, you wouldnt care. And finally, I hate it when someone dies, all you're allowed to say is that they were great. I'm pretty sure a large percentage of the worlds pricks end up dying at some point.
Laya, the report I saw about an hour ago on 9 news said he dived onto it.

*sniff* :'(

I don't know how true this is, but I heard that his wife was in Tasmania at the time, so when the news came out (and was subsequently broadcast everyhere, including the InterWeb) his wife hadn't actually been told. Which is a bit shocking if true. So my heart goes out to all his family (and all the animals at Australia Zoo) as he really was great.

The BBC report says nothing of the sort about "diving" onto a stingray.

Despite his somewhat eccentric character and potentially dubious animal handling methods, Steve Irwin was a huge supporter of conservation and animal welfare, always prefering to remove an aggressive crocodile from a neighbourhood rather than let it be killed.  I think his impact will be remembered.

RIP

I never had the chance to see any of his documentaries, but it appears that he was a little...weird, as well as geniounly caring about wildlife, Australia, and his family. Either way his teaching hopefully will leave something behind.

[Cameron]

The report I heard mentioned diving onto, but reports are bound to be scattered for a while. My query was based on one report, so if I offended anyone I'm sorry. He did seem to be a nce guy though, teaching people about the importance of nature seemed to be his main goal, which I can dig. Hopefully someone takes up his reigns in that goal.

Dan_N

Yeah, that really sucks.

I grew up with that guy, then I grew out of that guy.

But come on!

He had it coming a mile away!

Finally, that thing that stung him, he was just fed up!
A revolutioner I say!
He was watching TV, saw some documentares on the "crocodile hunter" and said: "Hey, those guys are pansies! I would sting the hell out of him! I would sting him so hard that injection would be named not injection, but my middle name, Norbert! 'Nurse, it's time to him a norbertation!'. Yeah. All I want is to take a crack at it. Just one!"
And so the little A. Norbert Sting got his chance... And so he shall be remebered as the one who (freakin') finally ended that madman's reign!
Here's to you, Norbert!

(P.S.: I did not inted this to hurt anyone's feelings. This was just test. A test of comic creative writing under 5 minutes. Hope you laugh. Sorry if anyone's offended. Kudos!)

I heard on the news from an interview with his manager that was with him at the time, that he was swimming above the stingray, and it hit him in the chest with its barb, straight into his heart, they got him onto the boat, and were trying CPR all the way back to some nearby station (30km away), but when they got there he was pronounced dead, they think he died instantly.

It was just a freak accident.

he also said it was ironic that they were filming a documentary that was called something like, 'Most Deadly Sea Creatures'

It's the 3rd recorded death from a Stingray

Oh dear. I can't get the word "inevitable" out of my head.

His joy of living was catchy, seeing him on television made me smile. RIP
