Looking for dead-ends (in order to avoid them)

Ah, but it is for this that people ritually burn their copies of Roberta Williams games... :)

LOL. Many of the King's Quest games were probably rushed and they couldn't devote enough time to making the puzzles logical and workable and not impossible.

Walking deads and dead ends may be different in your mind, but I've never seen any indication that people actually make a distinction between the terms.

I don't see any distinction really. Maybe the flavour of unfairness is a bit different. In a dead-end perhaps the game lets you know... whereas walking dead seems to suggest you're 'merrily walking dead' not knowing you've died.

I think that was what was mentioned. It's trivial, really, but I suppose with dead-ends you know, while with walking deads, you don't (like most Sierra games).

There's nothing worse than playing a buggy adventure game and wondering if you truly are stuck or the game had fudged up. Example:

"Sixth Sense Investigations" on the Amiga. Nice game, bugged to death. I was stuck for ages, and found the solution. It didn't work, and I followed it to the letter. I looked up MANY solutions, they all said the same thing. (And the solution should have been really easy, it was basically pulling a bunch of levers and presssing buttons)  I heavily suspect it was a bug, just like the bugs I'd encountered before in the game, one bug causing me to start all over again as the character got stuck.

Same thing with X-Files video adventure game:

I got stucked, red the walkthrough, did the right things, and nothing happened ... just Scully looking at me with dumb face...  :o

To add a game where you can die/loose, I can name 'Indy and the last crusade'. It was a little bit funny though, for example 'Hitler found the graal and Indy had to clean his boots for eternity' (something like this). You could die too (the circular saw in the temple) :D.
