Sound effect won't play

I have a sound effect in my game that won't play. I've read the other posts on the same subject but they don't seem to help fix the problem.

When I call the sound effect, it doesn't play, and when the game exits, I get "Sound sample load failure: cannot load sound 0".

My file is called "sound0.wav". It's in the Music directory of my game. I've regenerated the VOX files (but when should I do this? Before or after saving the game?). The file works fine if I run it separately, so it isn't corrupt.

I notice that there is nothing in the Compiled folder - should the file go there?

Thanks.

Looking at my games files, I have sound in a folder called "Sound". And if that doesnt work, try having them in the main bulk of the folder.

Also, you should have posted this in the beginner's technical questions section, the one at the very top. And the bonus effect of going by these rules is that you get answers from the right people!

Matt posted faster than me, but:

Sounds go in the sound folder, not the music folder.

Beginner's technical questions go in the Beginner's technical questions board, not the Adventure-related talk and chat board.

Also, start checking the dates on the threads that you're posting in.  I know you were trying to do a noble thing here but I don't think many people were going to click on that link seeing how the thread has been dead for over two years.  And that was the second long-dead thread you've dug up today.  Just make sure it's justified before you do it.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yes, you're quite right, this thread is in the wrong place... I thought I had posted it in Beginner's technical questions... I must have changed forums before posting. Sorry about that.

EDIT:
It didn't work with directories called "Sound" or "Sounds" but did when it was in the directory one level above that.

Oops, looks like I'm being a total noob today with posting things... Yes, the thread was long dead, but someone searching for info on sound files (as I was) might still unearth it and click on that dangerous link.

It depends on what version of AGS you're using - the 'Sound' folder only appeared with 2.72. In 2.71 there were folders for 'Music' and 'Speech' with sounds left in the main folder, and before that everything was just in the main game folder. AGS autocreates the folders it needs - if there was no Sound folder, the files should be in the main folder (as you found out).
I know what you're thinking ... Don't think that.

Thanks - that makes sense. I'm using version 2.71.
