I saw this film the other day, and I can't say I'm suprised. I'm getting a little "Big Brother" feeling, althought I know that this is just one movie, and that the creators may exaggerate(?) alot...

What do ya think?

Paranoia :p Just like the "it was the us government that flew planes into WTC" myth. I don't mind if Google have a stack of information on me. I'd only mind if I was perhaps a child molester, or terrorist or what not. And because I'm not, I have nothing to fear. And those that are put themselves in that targetable position anyway. They certainly aren't going to have my CC details, and if they do - well there's obviously some fraudulent behaviour coming in on their behalf and once the public and media are aware, Google will be royally fucked upon.

I'm pretty sure everyone had the same fear of Microsoft a decade or so ago, and we all realised it wasn#t what it seemed and now a lot of that money goes into charities. Perhaps if Google really want to make an impression on Earth, they too could put a lot of their money into developing third world countries (though yes there probably will be an altereor motive i.e. so that Africans can one day use Google too).

Again, it depends on who decides what makes you a "terrorist". For example, some people could deem the AGS forum member potentially terroristic, seeing how less many of us like the United States / Bush (whom I'd like to nail on the next tree, for one  ;))

Anyway, I guess I'm just being paranoid, but... I don't like people who know anything about me. I mean, really - does anyone here know my real name? Where exactly I live in Germany (don't trust the AGSers map)? My other two E-Mail adresses? Right-o. It's bad enough they have these mega-zoom satellites. I'm always trying to sit in front of my monitor in a way that completly covers it  ;)

Helm

Yes Akatosh... I know all about you.

Tuomas

Well it's a bit creepy. I once had someone call me in the middle of the night, just before our early morning trip to Russia. She really knew everything about me but refused to tell who she was. She knew about my family, their names, schools, professions, what colour car we drove, even the names of my late pet rabbits. She did say though that I didn't know her, but she fancied me... funny thing.

I don't mind it really, people are allowed to know stuff, as long as they don't use it. Even if google knew my bloodtype and the distance between my toes, I don't think they'd have any reason to use that information. Everyone knows I surf the net for weird stuff, like these forums. Who cares. But if it turns into stalking like that there above, well then, they're a quite big corporation to be spying on someone, but I wouldn't like that. Even though I kind of liked the fact that someone was stalking me. Even though she never contacted me after that so it really wasn't stalking...

Akatosh

Okay. So I'm just being paranoid, and nobody else minds that a big company knows everything about them. And Tuomas... I'd not like to have a stalker. Okay, hey, somebody fancies you / finds you interesting, woohoo, but you obviously didn't read what can happen to stalker victims...  :P

Helm

I intend to make a good winter coat out of your hide.

Akatosh

Winter is over, you're too late. Also, my hide doesn't make a good winter coat...

Helm

A pretty sundress it is then.

QuoteParanoia :p
Yeah I know it's a bit paranoid, and much of what the movie is sugessting is just speculations. However, what worries me is that we in small steps will accept a society were the privacy is no more.

For example, in my country the police has gained a lot of power to copy internettraffic from your computer and bug people who is suspected for crimes. It is of course to prevent crimes, and it's quite logic since the crimes are increasing on the net. Still it is a step against less privacy, think about the day when they put up cameras in our homes to prevent crimes.

I'm not saying that this is going to happen, but I don't think that people shall just accept stuff like this. I think that we always must be a little suspicius and paranoid, it's better than just accepting everything. I'm not saying that Google is an evil company who wants to controll the world, but you must stay critic.

QuoteAgain, it depends on who decides what makes you a "terrorist". For example, some people could deem the AGS forum member potentially terroristic, seeing how less many of us like the United States / Bush (whom I'd like to nail on the next tree, for one  Wink)

Yes I see your point and agree, even though that of course too is a bit exaggerated(?!), at least for the moment :P;)

There's a difference between knowing all about someone and having a bunch of data involving someone. Google has a lot of data, not phone numbers attached to photographs attached to addresses attached to social security numbers. Could they find all that out? I guess so, you can type my full name into google and find a majority of this info about me, not because google is tracking me but because google is tracking data.

The public library knows more about me than google does I'd bet.
"This must be a good time to live in, since Eric bothers to stay here at all"-CJ also: ACHTUNG FRANZ!

Sam.

I get wound up by conspiracy theorists. Do you really thik the government has no bigger concern than to watch your computer screen from a satellite? Unless you are a terrorist with bombs in your pockets, I would wager the government don't care about you, apart from your tax money.

Why would google be WATCHING us? They earn more than enough money from advertising without venturing into the illegal realms of stealing our personal data.
Bye bye thankyou I love you.

deFineLicht

Yeah you're right, the goverment is far too busy hunting The Terrorists, why would they care about us People?

Akatosh

Because the sheeps people are easier to observe, control and everything.

WTFH are you talking about man? Winter isn't over until March! It's February! We've got another month!!!

Besides...without Google we would have no Gmail. And no Googlefight. So...anybody who doesn't like Google can just screw off and die. Google has my authority to know whatever they want about me. :=

Khris

I'll start to get worried when Pinky and the Brain get sponsored by Google.

On a serious note, I don't like the idea of having my search results filtered/rearranged based on my Google profile.
