A Couple of Backgrounds

Here are a couple of test backgrounds for my game. I know they're still simple, too simple. Anything you could share to help me make them look better?

1.

2.

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.

Chaos.

In other words, it's too NEAT. You need some mess somewhere, or at least something out of place so it doesn't look like you built it out of construction blocks. :P

Unless, of course, that's what you're going for. In which case, it might work for the game.

I like the first one. It would be an interesting perspective to work from. Not so sure about the second, to which TerranRich's comment applies. I definitely prefer the first.

Also, if you use the first one, this "neat" style works quite well I think.

This looks like google sketchup to me (could be wrong), which is absolutely fine i use it myself sometimes. But you need to paint over the capture rather than colouring it in as you seem to have done here. That way you can create your own lightsource. At the moment the only way the shadow on the right of the image could be created is if the light was coming from outside the room and the room had no ceiling.

I do prefer the 1st background though, and would like to play an adventure game in that clean style. Its kinda cute looking.

In the 2nd image the table a bit screwy. Don't know whats going on with the legs.

Like to see more it has promise!

I am aware that I should know such things, but what is a "google sketchup"?

TerranRich

LOL google it

Wow, that actually looks damn good. I might use that for getting perspective and shapes right, then draw over them. Nice!

Would you mind uploading a non-jpg version of your screenshots? JPG compression does horrible, horrible things to your images - how about .PNG instead?

Otherwise, I quite like the screenshots, especially the first one. Well done!  :)

I agree with many people in this thread, I prefer the style of the first background, it has a nice perspective. Regarding this

, I agree with the part about the shadow not working. The main problem I see with is it makes no sense where it is. There's no logical way for that room design to produce the shadow where it's located. Overall it reminds me of a cardboard box that has it's top and a side cut off and there's the inside view.
