Here's a great resource for sound effects:

http://www.soundsnap.com

These are all sound effects recorded by users. It would probably be worth a look into the licensing since "free" needs a little elaboration. Nevertheless, looks like this website could be useful for amatuer game creators!

Hmm, is there a way to download these sounds? I've checked but I don't see a download button.

Wow thanks, sound always where hard to find  :) I always used the sounds from Unreal tournament, but this is probably way better.

Hem... next to all sounds there are big page like buttons that mention mp3 or wav, and osmething else. Click on them and you'll get to download the wanted files.

Very cool Greg! Very cool!

Great site, thanks Greg!
Its only a pity that the play system doesn't work for me :( So I have to download each file just to listen to it.
Another site worth looking is Freesound, I go by the user saphix there. Even though it is more for the musicians, you could find some nice sound FX and field recordings there too.
I am just a shallow stereotype, so you should take into consideration that my opinion has no great value to you.

Thanks! Some sound effects are just too hard to record myself! The bookshelf collapsing on the police officer in Secrets? A bunch of misc items found about the house then dropped onto the floor. But if I wanted a house on fire I dont think my parents would approve of me burning the house down for that accurate recording.  ;D

Very nice indeed, my infamous Klik'n'Play sound library can finally take its resting place. In a chest, buried deep somewhere in the woods.

If I got the license right, all samples are free as long as not used commercially ON THEIR OWN, meaning that any game using them could be commercial... sounds a good deal to me.
