To all moderators, I wasn't certain of the nature of this topic so don;t kill me..

Well , like the rest of you I have tried AGS 3.0. I've changed AGS version many times to the past and I didn;t have any trouble adjusting. But the very difference between those two versions makes it very hard/impossible for me. It's not that the interface has changed and some functions have been added. It's that it gives me a feeling that this version lacks that friendly character that AGS 2.72 has. I used to post at the beginners section trying to help people out. Nowadays I don;t even try. Except to a few occasions. Ghost said transition was weird but nevertheless funny. I just feel AGS has lost that blue cup feeling. CJ I know you put a lot of effort to add features to AGS making it more possible for the engine to compete with others , but I don;t know i just feel that way. I miss the window with all the modules. I miss when you made an error a line with the script popped up on you, scaring you.

Then stick to 2.72. :)

I personally don't feel the same way but that's probably because I'm so excited about the new features that I'm able to oversee the whole nostalgia part.

One thing that I do miss, though, is the Make my game -feature.

I actually find the new version a lot more user friendly and since I saw the 3.0 beta I decided to postpone my project and wait for the final to come out so I don't have to work with the old one anymore :) 3.0 version is definitely more programmer oriented and since that's my strongest side, I'm supporting the change.

The changes are for the better, and they're not that big anyway, imo, the editor has a similar feel. The main editor change for some people will be the lack of interation editor. I kind of hope as a community we can come up with an idea of a better replacement for it, because ok, it was crappy, but some people are allergic to script and always will be. We had a discussion about that in one of the tech forums, if anyone wants to add to it.

Edit: I suppose this can go in AGS General

I guess I'll have to grow up and come out of my 256 colour cave if want to upgrade to the new AGS. What is with you people and your pngs and your 2008?!

I wonder if it still has the "Oi! This is chrimbo you blimming idiot! Go have fun with your family or something!" feature? ;)

It seems Chris took that out...

...the nerve of some people! :P

One thing we have to recognize here Dualnames is that this isn't primarily an update to the engine like most updates; it is primarily an update to the editor.

There's still a pane that tells us the line(s) our error(s) occurred on and a window that pops up letting us know there were errors. And personally I feel that having the scripts integrated into the main game pane is more intuitive and user-friendly than having to use some separate window.

Also, I don't see what this has to do with your willingness to help other members with newbish questions...

Its a big scary world m8 but well worth it, very colourful and, well BIGGER!!

personally i like the new version, but my last game was done in version 254 i think, back when Noah had an ark  ::)

The sweeping improvements (removal or massive extension of limits on just about everything, the ability to have multiple scripts up at once, d3d support, etc) more than outweigh any growing pains of learning the new interface imo.  I think AGS 3 has also helped renew interest in the engine and will give way to benefits people have been requesting for years.

I haven't tried v.3.0 yet.  But I'm looking forward to it.
I still haven't played around with 2.72 fully yet because I'm a slacker who still hasn't got round to making any games yet.  So I'm thinking I may as well start from scratch with v.3.0 whenever I do get round to making something.

Guess I'll give it a try someday the following weeks. I like CJ and the new features sound cool, but I seem to be in love with 2.72. Despite the version was out when LC3 started being in production I sticked with 2.72. and if it wasn;t for Ghost I wouldn't even consider moving to 3.0

I do have hard trouble getting into 3.0.
Old interface simply looked much easier to use. Even despite fact that some things took menus in menus in menus to find, like setting a "run script" event for hotspot.

Visual Basic-style property sheets were never my favourite, but I guess one day I have to upgrade too.

Mortis

I find 3.0 much easier to use than any of the previous programs, it feels like a real Windows application now. Though the tabbed interface isn't perfect as is, it's certainly helped me find that extra groove, the "jazz", the music!

I couldn't really get along with the 2.72 editor. I really do like the new VS like interface and especially the way of attaching events. I'm glad I waited for the new editor before starting to script my game.
However I thinks its all preference.

Ghost

I'm proud I won you over, Dual  ;D

No, really, I also was hesistant. I started to try the Beta at around, what, 10 or so, and it was like an iceberg looming over me. But there are a lot of sensible changes, there are many limits removed, and I am absolutely in love with the extender functions.
Sure, it takes some getting used to it. But that's also the case when you replace your worn-out mouse or keyboard, or buy a game of your favourite genre that suddenly has such a lot of new and exiting features.

Take your time, you'll grow accustomed to the new look and feel, and I'm pretty sure after a while you'll never look back.

I haven't moved so far, either.

No need to be modest, we all know you've been Jonesing on the Ceej for more than a year now...just like all of us. :=

And really, the decision to upgrade or not isn't much different than it has been with any previous version: Do you need the features implemented by the upgrade? Does this need outweigh the discomforts upgrading may cause? If you can't answer "at least maybe a little bit" to both of these questions, then upgrading is just silly if you've already started on your project. If you're looking to start a new project, then the only discomfort to upgrading would be getting accustomed to "the new way of doing things" without having to actually convert any existing code and whatnot, so it might be easier, then again, having an existing project from 2.72 might help you to better find where things got moved to in 3.0. It's certainly not the most subtle of transitions, but if you like the sound of the new features, I highly recommend the new editor. I'd rate it as the best version of AGS released this year! 8)

Dualnames

This year counts only 27 days so far.  I'll give it a try like I said.

AGS 2.72 - AGS 3.0 = AGS -0.28 you stupid lot! :P

Personally I think I'll stuck with 2.72 for a while. That's personal.

Akatosh

Not going to change anytime soon, I think. I don't like changes in my programing environment... dialog system revamp was bad enough. :P  :=
