Hi all.

Just wanted to know something.
I have been looking for a way to share my first attempt at the first part of a game I made.
However I do not have a web site of my own. I have heard of (and read) about "freewebs.com" on the forums here and after looking at this site seems to be just what I need.
But reading some feed back on the forums here people don`t seem to like it. (I could be wrong). :-\

Please any help on this subject would be appreciated.

Jay.

Never heard of it.

I tend to use megaupload myself, simply because it works. There's at least a dozen other similar free file hosting services.

If your game is only a few megabytes you could probably host it on a free webhost like geocities, without running out of their bandwidth limit.

Megaupload is in general fast and can hold large files, BUT I'll advise not to use it.

In fact the site is region locked (unless for exception on some dates, which haven't happened for MONTHS recently) for free users (I've heard that installing their obviously malware toolbar may work, but I won't do that), so people in places like Hong Kong (i.e. me) won't be able to grab your files.

So, Megaupload actually doesn't work. (Well, it does work to some extent.)

If you want to have more people to be able to grab the files and the files are large, try other services like Rapidshare instead. Yes, Rapidshare is ugly and filesize cannot exceed 100MB for free users, but it least it works.

Though of course, if you're not going to offer large files, generally free web hosting like Geocities should suffice.

Well, I like freewebs myself. It's very easy to use.

I also prefer snapdrive.net to upload larger files because its free and it allows direct linking.
"Whoa, it's been upgraded to stank. Just last week it was only stink. Stonk can't be far away."

I find that sites hosted by freewebs always load so awfully slow. They also seem to force you to have some adverts on your site. I always use 110mb.com myself.

Avoid.
Infact, there's about billion ways to get free room for homepage WITHOUT server located on North Pole, ad-support from Devil himself and loading times measured in light years.

If you want you can make your page and even I can offer you free hosting (if content size won't exceed few hundred megs), but domainname would look long, such as
http://retrojay.increator.pri.ee or whatever you want for domain main name in similar manner

Anyways, if you desperately need this, I could help (PM me). Just make the page first.
Anything's better than Freewebs.

The best option, in my opinion, is to get free hosting for your website from any one of the fine folks here. If your game is huge, you can host it at any of the file-hosting sites.

Freewebs is pretty clunky, in my experience.

Stupot

My website is on Freewebs.
It's not really ideal for larger scale websites with lots of interconnecting pages, but if you're simply looking to put up a few pages about your game with a link to the download (which will have to be hosted elsewhere) then Freewebs might not be such a bad idea...

I like it personally, but I do like I've cheated and bailed out of learning the relevant coding... but that's a time issue.

You guys have given me a great idea for a website, and something that isn't all that complicated to do. A free mini-site for games, complete with free hosting, fully customizable (it would be a CMS, content management system, kind of like Wordpress + Wikipedia).
Status: Trying to come up with some ideas...

Do you need to be an expert at HTML to use 110mb? Because i'm the lazy type...

Well, they used to provide mysql database (now they charge for it, teh bastards), so you could've installed some sort of CMS on it. Now you still can install some sort of a CMS on it (just the ones that don't rely on database - most of them suck).

On second thoughts, forget I said anything, I'll just stay with blogger- I don't really need a proper site.

Loading times are measured in a unit of distance?

Anyway. Most decent filehosting services tend to be corrupted two months after you discover them. If you don't mind the one-in-ten-chance of an automatic redirect to a website that attempts to install spyware (there IS a warning dialog, but it even starts the download if you click on "No"), esnips.com can be rather decent. Apart from that... rapidshare is starting to look like the lesser of two evils.

I've been with x10hosting for a while and like all free hosting they have their quirks, but I haven't encountered anything I would consider a serious issue...

- You have to log into the forums at least once every two weeks.
- You have to change your index page within 24 hours of sign-up (even if it's just to a rather empty "under construction" HTML page).
- During sign-up and while navigating your cPanel prepare to be bombarded with advertisements.

What you get in return I say is very much worth it...

- Ad-free hosting.
- Support forum/chat.
- cPanel 11, php 5.2, MySQL 5.0, .htaccess, etc.
- 300 MB space / 10 GB (monthly) bandwidth.
- 5 email accounts, 3 subdomains, 3 FTP accounts, 3 SQL databases, etc.
- Dedicated Linux-based Apache server.
- Domain hosting.

All 100% free. The major complications I've had with this host is that shortly after I signed up they began transferring all the data to dedicated servers which resulted in down-time; and during the move from my parents' house I was without Internet access for a month and my account was terminated.

So as long as you actively USE the account (not just the site), x10hosting is good. If you're looking for a place you can get a hosting account that will never ever go away...I've had my Brinkster account for YEARS and only use it as a last resort since they don't allow hotlinking for my files. Of course I don't know if they even still offer a free hosting package...last I looked I couldn't find one, but that's been a while ago.

That's right. One time I was in "emergency" and downloaded and installed the malware toolbar and it worked for me. But I knew better and so I simply uninstalled it afterwards.

For file hosting I use www.rapidshare.com, it's enough for me. As for webhosting, I remember I used to know a good service, but I forgot about it.
