Someone recently asked if it's possible to make an AGS game without any scripting at all. I'd have to say if you're planning on producing something worthwhile then it isn't possible at all. But this new project has taught me that a non-adventure actually requires far less coding than a medium sized adventure game.

I was standing at a bus-stop a fortnight ago when I had the idea for Dumbass Drivers!, a racing arcade style game with AGS. I basically wondered why I'd never tried using the OnKeyPress stuff before, and once I got a crude handling of it then decided to make a full game of it. It's honest to say the handling in the game is shoddy, there isn't any acceleration or deceleration which is something I'd like to look into in the future.

I've started various racing games before, and making this reminded me of back in 99 when me and my friend tried to make a racing game in QBasic...it sucked! None the less this version, thanks to AGS, was simple & fun to make. Give it a try! You'll be seeing a few games of this nature from Screen 7 over the next few years Im sure!!

So despite the "dumbass" game mechanics, I hope people can enjoy it's quirky nature! I've got a demo complete, which features the first of four racing locations. I've got lots planned and I hope to have the full game ready for Christmas or January next year. You can download the demo below :)

You play a manic driver who needs dollar fast and happens to stumble across Mr Asszalez in Silly City. He needs a crazy driver and you seem fit for the job! Pass his tutorial and you'll be able to choose from 4 different working locations.

Screenshots, which are out of date:

The graphics are dumbass, but it'll all be a bit better in the full-game

Many thanks to Grundislav for his voice acting skills, and to all the testers who've helped me reach this stage. Some of the art in the demo is uncomplete. The full game will come with a nice setup & create a shortcut on the desktop for easy startup. And yes, of course - this game is 100% freeware :)

3D cut-scenes will immerse you in all the dumbass driving!

The demo features 4 missions, from very easy to very hard, so good luck! Check out the readme file inside the zip and extract the files into a folder of your choice to begin! The game is made for 320x240 resolution, and the in-game video files are all LOW quality for the purposes of the demo. The intro will be extended in the full game too ;)

Deliver pizza in a mission that isn't called Pizza Quest

So enjoy, and keep an eye out for the main event!

Oh, and because it's a racing game, here's another tacky screenshot that racing game fans always seem to enjoy :P

It's a false promise, btw ;)

NEWS, NOV 08! Matti is now on board to help draw better backgrounds, and he's doing exactly that. Check out this WIP!

(42mb)

PS. If you're an artist & you want to make my city maps look lovely, I'd love to hear from you. You will of course be credited :)

PS. Sorry the filesize is large. The maps were about 10mb each in BMP format, so I reduced them to PCX (500kb) but the gamesize stayed huge :/

Matti

This could be a fun game if acceleration and deceleration were included and the maps would look cooler. Also, there should definitely be a diagonal view of the car.

It's funny. Never thought of an AGS-Racing game myself but AGS is indeed an adequat editor for that.

PS: I PMed you about the city maps..

Thanks matti! Expect that PM reply in a few minutes :)

I realise my graphics are lame & this demo has about 3 minutes of gameplay, hehe! Oh, and a few more bugs that have recently been pointed out to me, but it is just for fun. Thanks for downloading :)

Matti is updating the artwork and it's looking great, so I'm still aiming to get the full game out by CJmas! Oh, and Mr Timothy, thanks for the PM - I may have a small amount additional stuff I could ask for you to contribute :) I'll be in touch.

Ahh well great news, Matti is lending his style to the game and reworking the current maps and creating several new ones! I'm pleased to say he's making it look fantastic. Thanks Matti!

Here's a work in progress

Just to let you know the download URL for the "demo" has been updated, I hadn't realised the RapidShare thingy had stopped working. Anyway, it's where it should have been in the first place now :)

No further news as I'm still awaiting updated art but you can bet your dumbass the next version will include Rodekill Island :)
