Is it worth posting?
I don't know. But my attempt at a pun sparked your curiosity and here you are.

So there's this thing called university which requires that I draw things that I normally wouldn't. Which brings us to
Exhibit A

My problem is that I am fairly new to this thing called portraiture (stuff like this is more my style). Long story short, I've got a long way to go here. I'm looking for crit, because it's far from perfect and I'm stuck on where to go. One thing I noticed was that the lips seem too short and the space between the eyes a wee bit too large. But I could just be looking at it too much.
So, if any of you skilled in this area happen to take a look, I would greatly appreciate any suggestions/criticism or even just what works, if anything.

Evil

Doesn't look bad, but there are some obvious disproportions.

The eyes are pretty far apart. Keep in mind you want about an eye's width between the eyes and from the edge of the eye to the side of the face.

Eyebrows are very displaced. Right eyebrow looks right, left not so much. Even if one eyebrow is raised, the bone structure of the face will keep the shadows of the socket in the same place.

Nose is a bit bulby but all noses are different. The bridge is very sharp. Try softening that line.

Mouth is narrow too, but that's partly because the eyes are off. Generally the edges of the mouth are in line with the center of the pupil.

Here's a quick (and kind of scary) image I pulled off google.

It's simplified things a bit too much and left some things out, but hopefully it will help. The best thing always is too look at an actual face. Don't make assumptions about where things are. Look and measure them with your eye.

Oh, and to post your image copy and paste the [ img ] code from Photobucket to your post.

Thanks Evil, that really helps a lot. I've gone back and changed a few things, namely trying to fix the left eye socket, shading the nose a bit more and taking an inch or so off the chin. Which was probably not the best idea but the face I'm going off of was a lot shorter anyway.

Also, something else I should have mentioned  was that the assignment I am doing this for demands the final product be based off a collage of pictures of the face, and not just one whole photo. Although the three photos I used are of the same person, they were all taken months apart and from different angles, which is half of why the eyebrow/ eye proportions are pretty bad. The other half is that I just can't seem to draw them right :P

Anyway, here's the edit ( didn't post the actual images because they're absolutely massive, and for some reason I couldn't get the resize to work. I still have a lot to learn it seems.)

The mouth needs to be moved up and lengthened a bit more. Probably a lot of other things still need fixing too.

Khris

That link's broken (ftp instead of http). Anyway, I took the libery of resizing it and adjusting the levels so people can crit this.

First tell if you want to make a real portret (no caricature, no fantasy, no Picasso or something :))?

If you want to make a portrait as real as possible (of a real human I mean), then here's something that might help :)

Note: Directions are as follows:

LEFT --------------- RIGHT

1.Nose looks a little bit broken to me. The right nostril is higher (the one in red) and not so oval like the left one.
2.The right part of the mouth (in blue) is somehow smaller then the left one (lips are the same but it's just smaller considering that the
3.The right eye (in brown) is not symmetric to the left eye and the eyebrows are totally different.
4.Face looks little bit too flat. Add some cheekbones, wrinkles (especially on the forehead; not too many, 'cause this is a young lady).

That's all I can think of right now. :)

PS: Look at the scheme that Evil posted in his first post. If you want to make it more realistic, everything has to be symmetrical unless the person you want to draw has some physical defect(s). Your lady looks a little bit like him (especially the eyes :P) ->

Andail

I don't really understand the question posted in your topic. Why wouldn't there be anyone around to give you consultation? Is it worth posting? Who knows, hopefully...

As for your portrait; it seems you have drawn it totally without references or guidelines. If you want it to be realistic, start with getting the basic anatomy right and give it proper proportions.

rbaleksandar

Andail, he wants to fix it. But since I have know idea what he wants to draw (if it's some kind of extravagant style, then according to it this portrait may be very good!), I gave him tips for a realistic portrait (if that's what he want to draw).

:)

So I guess it's supposed to be lopsided...
