Quest for Glory I 2.5D

I started this thinking "wouldn't it be cool to see the QG hero in 3D?" Then, I got excited about the background my friend drew for the first screen, and it grew into this 12-screen preview. The RPG engine is my own (the 3D parts are jPCT). If anyone can draw backgrounds and would be willing to help me I could finish this really fast now, as most of the mechanics is already written. I'm already working on a more complete demo (should be done soon) which fixes the transparency issues, a few bugs, and adds two screens (one of which a save game to Erana's Peace).

BUMP

If anyone's weirded out by the fact that it's only an IP, not an URL, it's just because I haven't picked an URL yet. Don't be afraid to check out the (monstrously simple) website and download the preview!

LGM

I don't mean to be rude, but what exactly is the point of all this?
You. Me. Denny's.

AGP

It's a fairly rude question, but the point of all what? The project itself? Modernize Quest for Glory. Or, if you prefer, a hobby. What did you expect?

LGM

I guess to further elaborate...  Is this an engine you created? What exactly constitutes 2.5D? I don't really get what your project goal is, otherwise than to modernize... I tried running the game but it locked up after the Sierra screen.
You. Me. Denny's.

AGP

Yes, it's my own engine (which in its own right is a reason to do it!). The characters are all 3D, the backgrounds aren't (but they're much better and higher-res than the original backgrounds). I'm glad you downloaded it. Try running it again, and if it crashes, look for a log file that you might post here. It's probably the compiler's problem, but you never know. By the way, just to make sure, don't click to skip the Sierra animation, just wait for it to end.

Is the image on the website a screenshot of the game? If not, could you post some screenshots? On principle I download no game nor demo I haven't seen a screenshot of. ;)

rbaleksandar

Yeh, would be nice to post one or two screenshots, so that we all can see ;)
I am a mighty pirate. Arrrrgh!

AGP, this looks very nice... but it is VERY slow response-wise. I got past the first initial screens and started to play. The movement is not very responsive to the places where you click. Switching scenes is almost  near impossible to do. When changing your actions and hitting the infamous "you can't do that" it freezes up and quite literally means "YOU CAN'T DO ANYTHING NOW"... so to save myself from the frustration of continuing I closed it out. (I may have lasted up to five minutes of game play... maybe.)

The logo at the start was very clunky too. I see you're running it a 800x600 with thousands of colors... why didn't you use an animated GIF instead of HQ (high quality)  JPGs?  Just wondering...

A very noble project attempt indeed, but the engine is killing it with it's slowness, unresponsive clicks of the mouse, difficult scene changing, and freeze-ups. Get these nailed down and post the beta for more testing!
"Hail to the king, baby!"

AGP

Rharpe, thanks a lot for the comments, I appreciate them. I am as we speak working on a new, more polished, version. And to be perfectly honest, I slapped that Sierra animation together without giving it much thought. But if I can achieve a near-identical result with a single GIF, I will for this next version.

I'm kind of with LGM on this one, what IS the point of this thread?  It's not necessarily a rude question, though you're free to interpret it how you want.

The 'site' seems like a rather poorly designed list of bugs, a half assed logo and a some picture of two random people, one of which I'm assuming is you.

The engine's yours? Great.  You should still be posting in the thread that's for recruiting people like artists.  Just because you're not using AGS to make it, doesn't mean you're suddenly better than everyone else and get to post fancy new threads when one already exists for such a purpose.

And seriously, bumping your own thread?  Most people often don't reply to threads they have no interest in, and replying to yourself just makes you look desperate and annoying.

Good luck with the project, and I hope you find people to help and such, but please read things like the forum rules before posting randomly, then getting all defensive.

Andail

Oy, relax, he's not being that defensive.

But I'm curious to see those backgrounds, which are supposedly much better than the original ones. So how about some screenshots?

AGP

I don't think that anyone with that big an inferiority complex could ever insult me, Renal. You've been, in fact, quite flattering. And thanks for being the voice of reason, Andail. By the way, don't judge it by the quality of the 3D models, which are a work in progress, but here's a screenshot:

After taking a look at the game I have to say in all honesty that I don't think the backgrounds are an improvement as much as a different approach, and the perspective plane you're using for the 3d renders is not synched up to the perspective of the backgrounds.  The hero in particular is wandering at a quasi-isometric angle.  I do think this has potential, but as with all fan projects I think you'd go farther just making your own original game rather than riding the coattails of someone else's design.  Two obvious perks of making an original game are you can potentially sell it (because everyone loves money!) and you don't have rabid fanboys of the source material spanking you for not being faithful for one reason or another.

You obviously don't know me that well..

Agreed, ProgzMax, but as I said I started this more out of curiosity, which was a wonderful thing because it got me to write this engine. Now I've just come so far that I could finish it but for some artwork. I have every intention of using this for a project of my own in the near future, though.

This thread reminded me of the QFG series mod for Morrowind... Too bad that was cancelled (though the chicken hut that was made for it is available on a MW resource site somewhere, plus the creator's site.)

What format and where can I find it? Was it any good?

Found it, stashed in my old bookmarks.

Mesh was created by Lady Eternity, I think the stuff she has on her website is available for use, but since you're not modding Morrowind a few things pop up.

1) You legally can't use any MW resources, due to copy right. Original works (which the chicken legs are) should be okay.
2) You should ask LadyE for permission to use it a non-MW project. It's possible that they are to be used in those projects only.
3) The files are .nif type, which (I think, but I could be wrong since I don't do 3D) require a .nif exporter/importer to use in 3DS Max. Alternatively, I know that many MW modders use Blender. (not sure how to use in Blender, check its website)

PS-The site is still up for QFG3D, also called Re-Quest for Glory
