I felt the same way when I heard, even more so since I'm celebrating my 32nd birthday today. Will add "Don't You Forget About Me" and "Pretty in Pink" to the party playlist in honor of this great, great man.

I, too, was very saddened by this news.

His movies were a staple of my childhood. I learned how to use (and consequently got grounded for it) the word "dildo" because of The Breakfast Club. My brother and I still quote many of his movies on daily basis!

Now he's hanging with Uncle Buck somewhere ... not such a bad gig I suppose.

"You should see the toast! I couldn't even get in through the door!!"

Yeah, I remember my older brother and I watching Ferris Bueller for the first time, and almost passing out from laughing.

His classic movies have long been a part of my DVD collection (and Career Opportunities, which I've always had a soft spot for myself), but his output during the '90s reads like a list of Satan's desert island movie choices.

But at his best (even when only writing) his movies were near-perfect blends of comedy and pathos.

One of the local TV stations runs a daily SMS (text messaging) based poll and today it was asking which of his movies were the best. I don't remember what all options were provided but none of them jumped out at me as having been particularly impacting to me.

I am only 21 (born 1988) so I'm sure that probably is relevant, but I definitely recognize the importance of movies like Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller's Day Off...they were and still are major period icons for the film industry. I personally never knew they were all directed by the same person, but knowing now I understand the impact of his death.

So Mr. Hughes I may not have known you, and the height of your directing days may have eluded me, but farewall good sir. Best to you in the next life.
