How can I make an inventory bar like the one in Indiana Jones?

I am in the middle of trying to create an Indiana Jones fan game, (need help with btw), and need to know how to make an old fashioned Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis style inventory. Any help will be appriciated!

Please don't open thread after thread.
There are several templates for old LucasArts interfaces floating around, and I believe somebody is working on releasing an updated version for AGS 3.1.x.

Please understand that a good deal of your requests here can't be answered quickly with a few lines of example code since the problem is way to big.
Either search the forums for previous solutions or try to get a decent understanding of how AGS works first.
