Can someone tell me why OGG play's fine but OGV results in a black screen using the playvideo command?

Are you trying to play video? I might be right in saying that its only for audio

QUOTE

File extension OGV description:
Ogg Vorbis is a new audio compression format. It is roughly comparable to other formats used to store and play digital music, such as MP3, VQF, AAC, and other digital audio formats. It is different from these other formats because it is completely free, open, and unpatented.

Is it simply a matter of naming that makes the difference? I mean, if you rename the .ogv file to .ogg, does it play, or are they different export formats in the encoder?

GarageGothic:
It's just a matter of renaming.

Barefoot:
It can also be video. From the manual:

Plays an AVI, MPG or OGG Theora file, or any other file type supported by Media Player. The game is paused while the video plays.

There are two distinct type of videos that the PlayVideo function can play.
The first is OGG Theora, which is a recently introduced video file format. AGS has built-in support for playing these videos, so everyone who plays your game will be able to see the video. OGG Theora videos are also built into the game EXE file when you compile the game (just make sure the file has a .OGV extension and is placed in your main game folder).

----
So, when using ogg and using the command playvideo in the script, after compiling the ogg plays fine.
when renaming ogg to ogv and using the command playvideo in the script, after compiling playing the ogg results in a black screen...

If the file is named .OGV, AGS uses its internal Theora decoder to play the file. If this is giving a black screen then that sounds like AGS is unable to play the file for some reason. If the file is a reasonable size, would you be able to upload it?

If you name it .OGG, AGS will just use Media Player to play it, which may work for you but will not work for other people if they don't have a Media Player Codec installed for Theora.

Thanx Puma, I'll upload it when I'm back at home.
Il'll keep that "Media Player Codec for Theora" requirement in mind if choosing for OGG instead of OGV.
But OGV still would be better since it's in the exe...

I've actually encountered a similar problem. I have a Media Player Codec installed and it plays fine externally, but AGS won't seem to play it. The video isn't mine but if you ask general_knox about it he may be able to send you his video.

Knox

PM me if you need help with something! I got my vid to play fine from AGS, I can explain it to you if you wish.

Chris & Knox. I've PM-ed you with a link to the ogg video that turns out to be blackscreened when playing it as OGV within AGS. Hope someone can explain me why this problem occurs... Thanx allready :)
