What is capital wasteland?

AFAIK, trees are growing steadily in Chernobyl. Wildland animals are larger than in "normal" conditions - some documentary showed wild hogs being double size of normal.

Also, widespread radiation is not eternal. Maybe 40-60 years, after which, it's left only most contaminated pockets. People can be stupid enough to destroy themselves, but Earth wants to survive. So self-cleansing goes on and on.

So if we have plants, we have water and air. And food. Fallout 3 didn't show any trees so where did air come from? Everybody should have been dead.

I support pandemic theory, but nuclear winter feels very, very unlikely.

Questionable

From what I understand, the Fallout world isn't one of COMPLETE ANNIHILATION. Major cities are mostly destroyed but in the greater sense of the world trees and regular animals (just like regular humans) DO exist, although to an extent more greatly reduced than our modern world. Also, it is difficult to imagine:

A.) GLOBAL Sterilization... if anything only certain parts of the world would be effected.

B.) Much of an effect on Oceanlife at large.

Given these concessions, I don't believe it is possible to have what we witness in Fallout 3 occur in anything beyond a relatively isolated manner.
All my trophies have disappeared... FINALLY! I'm free!

That's what really bugged me about The Road.  The boy was born within the first year of the nuclear warfare (or whatever the bombs were - it was unclear), and he was around 10 years old in the movie.  The sky was still cloudy, the world seemed radiated or something, crops couldn't grow, trees were all dying.  Food was scavenged from houses and stores, and in the worst case, cannibalism and farming of people.

I personally can't see something such as the result of nuclear warfare lasting 10 years, especially throughout the whole country/world.  But hey, I'm no scientist.

I wonder how many other civilisations have discussed this before us?

I don't want the world, I just want your half
