So I need a software suggestion.

I need something that is essentially a web based file access system.

Basically users log on and can download files from the system.

The only caveat is that users must only be able to access the set of files that they are given permissions for.

so some user can access file set A & C, another user can access A & B, and another user can acces B & C and so on.

I know this is basically an FTP server but does anyone have any suggestion for something that looks a little more corporate with a web based design?

Mr Flibble

I know you can code web-based FTP front ends which hide the fact that the user is ever using FTP, it just looks like a storage website, though I don't know if that's what you're looking for or if you want some pre-built product you can adapt.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!

I was really looking for something like a company portal type thing.

ya know with a control panel and user control and stuff similar to wordpress or something.. something like this must exist

You could check out Drupal with the file access plugin. It's a little fiddly to set up, but once you've got it running, it's a very stable, customizable and good looking solution.

You can define different user groups and allow them access to certain files or file groups. Don't be put off by its complexity, installation is easy, customization takes a bit of time but is worth the pain in the end, I guess.
I, object.

that sounds like a good suggestion.

Thanks gorgeous.
