This is big! The famous never-before-scene of Luke constructing his new lightsaber. And they tease with there being more scenes like that planned for the Blu-ray release of Star Wars.

I saw this awhile back ... very cool stuff!  It's a rare thing when something new from the OT pops up that I haven't seen before!  So this was nice.

It's clearly not Mark Hamill under the hood but still, a cool scene filling a little "hole" in the original.  Having seen this, and seeing a video where GL confirms it's legit, I'm kind of anxious to see what else they put in the Blue-ray versions.

I'm pissed though 'cause the Blue-rays are only the Special Editions which means Greedo shoots first ... and that = dumb.  Totally destroys Han's character.

What do you mean it's not Hamill? He confirmed it's him and, while he might have trouble remembering everything like it really happened, I'd say it really looks like it's him, especially in that final shot from the side.

Part of me loves it when they "find" new footage from the original trilogy.

The other part of me thinks Lucas has become the worst kind of self-serving Hollywood shite merchant; a peddler of tat and product.

Very interesting interview with Gary Kurtz on his differences with Lucas post-Empire.

Dunno ... to me I thought, when first seeing the clip, that it clearly didn't look like him.  Oddly I thought the hand looked like his though.  Then I saw this clip.  I'm not sure where you heard Hamill confirmed it was him; do you have a link for it?

How long has been this deleted scene around btw? I only just learned about it and thought it's only a week old.

Darth Mandarb

Interesting ... he doesn't really say it's him (the actor) but speaks more in the character sense.  If he was saying it was him in the robe it's a tad mysterious because it conflicts with what he says in that youTube video I linked to.  I don't really care either way, it's still a nice scene!

Was it only a week ago that was announced?  Feels like I saw that longer than a week ago but I've been so busy lately my sense of time's passage is a tad skewed!

Well lucas has his own strange theory on his films. He sais that a film is never finished and that you can work on it forever. Adding stuff here and there, making things better, bla bla bla.

As an artist I do not agree. I view film making the same way as I veiw a composition in painting. A composition is perfect when you can't add or take away an element without ruining the composition. The same goes for film. The movie was perfect the first time they shot it. Why mess with it?

The lightsaber construction scene is just another example of George Lucas' new approach to filmmaking, ie slap every detail right the fuck down, in your face, smear it around til it stinks, then let it linger awhile like a fart.  His goal must be to leave absolute zero to the imagination because he no longer has one.  Also to fulfill his goal of continuously milking the teat of Star Wars until he dies while simultaneously setting a record for the most dvd re-releases of any movie ever.

I don't agree that it was perfect. At least A New Hope was definitely a very different film to what was originally intended. However, the problem is when you get obsessed about your old creation and allow it dominate your life forever the way Lucas did.

That said, there is nothing in the Special Editions that I find really disturbing. Star Wars always very much about strange scenes and whimsical choices, so even a new song and dance number isn't out of place.

I'm much more annoyed but the many changes done to serious movies. Like the Apocalypse Now re-cuts (including a changed ending) or the ugly bluish tint they put all over the new version of Blade Runner.

Mr Flibble

There's a good question, which movie was more seriously sexually assaulted, Star Wars or Bladerunner? I haven't seen the version of Bladerunner with the infamous Ford voice-over at the end ruining the ending but I'm told it's atrocious.

As for Lucas' meddling, if he wants to that's fine I suppose, but it's really difficult to get hold of the original films and know they're the original ones anymore. If you're going to constantly change them, I think the originals ought to be available too.

Watching the lightsabre scene, I just find it amusing to hear all that cheering when the new scene is revealed. It's like 5 seconds of new footage and they go wild.
Ah! There is no emoticon for what I'm feeling!
