Welcome! Come in! Come in! So, you're interested, eh? Good!

Come join us in the extremely cool Dwarf Fortress succession game, where we all take turns playing the fort for a year before passing it onto the next player!

What is this and why should I care?

- Dwarf Fortress is a roguelike fort building simulator, notorious for its really high learning curve and perma-alpha status, meaning new features are always added.

More information here! http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/
And here! http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page.. The wiki is an invaluable source of information. What fun!

High learning curve!? I'm too scared to try, I'll get laughed at---

- Relax! We're here to help you get by, and provide you with valuable advice and/or lame jokes for the future! And also the aforementioned Dwarf Fortress Wiki provides great information for newbies and newbies-in-denial alike.

Oh man I'm PUMPED! Where do I sign up!?

- Follow the instructions on joining the IRC server here. Once you've joined the server, join the #dorf channel, which is focused on Dwarf Fortress and discussion about the game.

Of course, you may discuss this game in this thread, which will contain yearly in-character & out of character reports from other fellow AGSers on how our trainwreck wonderful and self-sustaining fort has advanced!

And since our lovely piece of AI in the AGS channel decided to choose me as the one who gets the ball rolling, this is the first yearly report:

The Embark, Year 1051

Since I was busy fixing my screw-ups in-game, I forgot to actually take screenshots of my progress, so please enjoy this bit of text instead. Sorry!

Yearly Report of the fort Amostkivish to the Mountainhomes:

Our embark out of the Mountainhomes onto the site progressed as planned, with the harsh winter relenting as our digsite came in closer. Kol Bimmasos, our leading miner instructed the lesser experienced ones on effective digging while we planned on the usage of our limited supplies. We noticed, to our horror, that we forgot to include any hatchets of any kind for our lumberjacks. However, we were lucky to have included spare logs to accommodate ourselves for the time being.

Building the first few floors of our fortress went by without incident. We managed to successfully irrigate farmland and plant crops, build a kitchen and still. Bimmasos complained his aching back, which most likely was a result of hauling the loose rocks into a stockpile all by himself.

During mid-summer, many dwarves complained on the staleness of the water, and demanded a well to be built. We ordered Bimmasos to investigate a suitable site near the living quarters. Not long after, our workers were busy hauling the required items to build our first well.

It is after Autumn came, our leading miner Kol Bimmasos came to us and told the well needs repairing, and also informed us that he had assigned a second well to be built, to accommodate "future demands". That was the last known sighting of Bimmasos to date.
Despite him going missing, the rest of the year was mostly uneventful, with the harsh winter coming and going. We are awaiting the following year with great anticipation.

There is, however, one more thing. Most of the dwarves have been heard talking about a "ghost in the well", and telling stories of a poor miner who drowned inside the first well with his soul left to wander forever. We considered the connection between these wild rumours and Kol Bimmasos' sudden disappearance, and concluded that we have no sufficient evidence as of yet, and have dismissed the claim.

Oh nice! I wish I was man enough to play dwarf fortress so I could join this. It should be fun to watch anyway.

Al_Ninio

I've just finished my year.
I will update this post tomorrow with my exploits and send the fort off to Virgil!
