If Rorik is afraid of staying at a inn it clearly means someone is after him. We need to know more before we give him shelter.
I know we need friends and immediate danger isn't our concern but who the hell scares him so much?
I say we do things subtly but do it.

> Grant Rorik the privilege of dinning with the King, Jesterino and Lancelot, at the end of the day and turn (this should be our last action). The purpose of our warm, candlelit meal is to allow Rorik to tell us of his travels and adventures. Doing it at the end of the day(turn) will allow us to keep him standing by and us to carry on all the orders of the day.

Rorik was indeed the reason for this dinner.
Where is he?

Nope, as far as I can see from briefly scanning over all the posts after Rorik's appearance, there was no command to offer him to dinner. From post #307, that he:
Quote> Grant shelter to RORIK and ask him to tell us more about his home to the north. Also gently inquire about his mission and the fate of his companions. But make sure not to insult him if he really doesn't want to talk about it.

You're right, my mistake.

Fair enough - I guess the seed for having the dinner was planted there, but the actual 'event' that was decided upon was to just talk to Rorik there and then send him to be without supper. Oh well. Such is the nature of the beast when someone rephrases and that's the one that gets voted up. I'm just catching up to this game so I've been processing a lot anyway.

That aside, I stand by my suggestion that we Offer a LETTER OF MARQUE to BARON and ask about NEGOTIATING TRADE in the WEST. We don't have any enemies on the seas yet (That we know of), but it may well behoove us to pay it forward.

Let's all agree that Rorik and Lancelot are actually just off-screen and just didn't fit into the picture this time. Rorik already shared tales of his travely with you during the day and drunkenly chatted with Lancelot before excusing himself early for bed, since the wine enjoyed by these folks of the warm lands apparently makes him queasy. He did not share anything further of his mission and when Lancelot asked why this is, Rorik became apprehensive in his drunken state.

Let's all also agree that I did not forget that Rorik was supposed to come to this dinner because we had two separate guests invited to the same dinner and I got confused.

Let's all ALSO agree that my website host isn't currently down causing all of the images to not display at all.

It's a lot to agree to, but I'm sure we can all get along. ;)

I agree and it's never enough to thank you for this game again.
Thank you WHAM.

Are we really in a position to give out a letter of marque to a pirate clan which at the moment is probably much stronger in force than we are? Also, wouldn't this implicate us much more directly in their pirating than a simply trade agreement would? If they attack ships of other nations in our name, would those nations still want to deal peacefully with us?

In my opinion although they are indeed several times stronger than us, they lack the status we can offer as a kingdom. As for the letter of marque I did a little checking and I believe it could benefit us.

In the days of fighting sail, a letter of marque and reprisal was a government licence authorizing a person (known as a privateer) to attack and capture enemy vessels and bring them before admiralty courts for condemnation and sale. Cruising for prizes with a letter of marque was considered an honorable calling combining patriotism and profit, in contrast to unlicensed piracy, which was universally reviled.

We are, however, not dealing with a single person but with an entire clan of pirates. I don't think they have any interest in becoming our subordinates and might even consider the suggestion an insult.

miguel

You may be correct but from the clan's point of view it may be a great chance for them to become "legit". I don't think they'd be insulted by us from asking.

Problem

Before we consider offering a letter of marque, we should agree to the deal and see how it turns out. If the pirate clan proves to be reliable, we can always come back to this idea.

The Forkbeaks will love to sail under our flag ;-D

WHAM

You inform Dennis and Baron that it would greatly please you to establish fair trade between your peoples.

Baron seems overjoyed.

"There is always need for frest timber and cloth for repairs and maintenance, as well as making new ships. As soon as I return to my clan, I shall send a vessel up the river at once!"

Dennis and Baron continue to talk for a time, but soon all those present seem to be very tired.
You decide it is time for bed.
