Ladies and Gents,

I have an old game with ~200 gigabytes of code and resources. I'm wanting to recompile and run it - with the original editor, original version of windows, etc. For one reason or another, I've lost track of the game. Entirely. I don't know what editor it used.

I've used a hexeditor to find the following info in Game.agf, Block AA-F9:

<AGSEditorDocument Version="3.0.3.2" VersionIndex="27" EditorVersion="3.5.1.11">

I assumed this to mean version 3.5.1.11 of the AGS editor was used to make it.

I went to the editors and engines download page (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/ags-engine-editor-releases/)
and grabbed version 3.5.1 patch 11.

However, the file downloaded was 3.5.18-P11, and when installed, this info was echoed in it's 'Help->About...' window: "AGS Editor .NET (Build 3.5.1.18)."

How do I actually figure out which version of the downloadable editor to get so it doesn't "upgrade" and do damage to my game? or just say "wrong editor version"?  :confused:

Nothing can do damage if you keep a backup.
Anyway, minor patches should be for fixing bugs, not changing game data, check the update notes if it may be worth upgrading.

3.5.1.11 should be this one

You can just use Notepad.exe to open the game file; it's human readable XML (just text).

I recommend making a copy of the game files (minus the resources) and using 3.6.1 to work on it. You'll barely have to make any changes if at all but a bunch of bugs will be fixed.

The patches are made with a purpose to keep existing games working, so it should be okay to upgrade at least to the latest patch of a 3.5.1.
Or you may follow Khris's advice, make backup, and upgrade to the 3.6.1, which is the latest stable version.
Some people have upgraded their old ready games from version like 3.2.1 or 3.4, and they only required several fixes in settings or script to keep working.

To clarify this just in case, the last number in X.X.X.Y version does not match the patch number, these numbers also can mean beta versions etc, so that may be not convenient to find based on patch number.

I used to post "full editor version" in each release post, under the title. If you want to find exact 4-digit number, look for "Full release number: X.X.X.X" on the top of the first post. If you checked the wrong one you may usually deduce the correct version by adding or subtracting patch number. For example, if you opened some version and is sais 3.5.1.18, then your version is 7 patches behind.
