Hi all, I wanted to share an update on a high school slasher game I've been working on since the start of the year. I'm calling it Detention Room Rampage, until I can think of a better name  :-D

I've stuck the first hour or two online so give it a try, the link's in the dev diary below!

The Story

Ashley, a bona-fide goodie-two-shoes, has to go to school on Saturday for detention. That sucks! But things only get worse when a masked killer starts stalking the halls. Help Ashley explore her eerie, empty school, evade the killer and maybe get herself and her fellow students out of there alive in a classic LucasArts-inspired adventure.

Development diary

July 2025: I reckon I've finished the first third or so of the game - still needs a bit of polish (the sounds are all temporary placeholders) but it's fully playable so I'm sticking it online as a demo: https://matdogpig.itch.io/detentionrr. Give it a try and leave a comment!

Hey! Quite long demo with interesting puzzles, it was fun to play. Good graphics with nice little details.

I assume that the demo ends after
Spoiler
the gory scene and when the students leave B4 when Ashley tells them what happened.

Hide the ending in the text above for an unexpected ending

Hey thanks for giving it a try, I'm glad you enjoyed it  :-D  Yeah that's as far as the demo goes, a message should have popped up to say so?

I played this demo last night. I was very impressed. One hour long, and great atmosphere, fun puzzles and a lot of Stephen King references. You play somewhat with the types of characters included, but then makes them aware of the fact, which is always fun: "Do you think this is the Breakfast Club?"

How long will the full game be?

Hey thanks for giving it a try, I'm glad you enjoyed it! And yes there are a few references tucked in there  ;)

I reckon this is maybe the first third of the game, maybe a quarter. So the full game will be 3 or 4 times longer. If I ever finish it!

From a Noob with 3+ years of experience and just now arriving at the end of my game:

Most people will say: Start small, make different short games. Well, I coudln't help myself.  (roll)  (laugh)
One of the reasons is that I put so much work in character creation and visuals and animations etc and etc.
I made the choice to learn AGS alongside making that game I wanted to make. So in every Room, or Instance, I tried something new or coded something differently.
At this point, I sometimes go back to earlier Rooms to clean up the script with those XP I got along the way.
I also have those old Rooms that, script-wise, are chaotic but working, so I don't dare to touch anything anumore.  (laugh)

Also, you might have noticed that imagining things for your game and then have to create all the visuals, audio, animations, and the script, there's a lot of time that you will need to make it a reality in your game, right?

I don't know how much time you needed to finish this first part, but imagine taking that time 3 or 4 times for your game.

This being said, I'm sure that whatever your choice is, you'll get to the end of your project.

Cheers!  :)
