yeah, I know that I will probably have a few guns pointed at my head after I say this but here goes...
I want to try out other game engines. I tried RPG maker 2003 but I didn't like it because it didn't let me import my own graphics ( at least I didn't find a way to do that).   I know a couple of other adventure game engines like SGI and AGAST. I tried games factory but I hate it for the same reason I hate RPG maker.  In particular I'm looking for a decent first-person RPG engine.

Too late.  You've got seven hits in place.  It was nice knowing you.  :'(

I ran out of ammo! ;)

Anyway. I don't mind you using other engines, so long as you don't leave forever. But I don't understand '1st person RPG'. If you're talking about a 3d kinda game, I suggest:

Fly3D

But you can only get V1 (makes .exes) free :(. Also, you can adapt a 3D engine thats for QBasic, but even I can't understand it.

Sorry for not being any help.

But I like other RPG makers like:
OHRRPGCE (nice pallette options (you can make the same picture different colours), 320x200, fast, good multitasking, 256/16 colours, dos based)
RPGToolkit (Excellent quality drawings and import options, 640x480/800x600/1064x574, slow, bad multitasking, windows based)
Sphere (Like RPGToolkit, but with better multitasking and alpha transparency.)

;) Hope that helps!

Sphere is my favorite 2d RPG engine, it requires a lot of scripting though..
for a 3D game it's harder, 3d Gamestudio from conitec seems ok I guess.. haven't tried it myself, but from someone who is trying to make a 3d rpg I can say it's a lot of work ._.

But, you should make 3rd person adventure games instead >:(

I used crystal-space before. you'll find it in the sourceforge.com (or net or somethin')
Albert Barillé and Hergé, we love you

Well, it isnt a vidio game maker but it is fun. Visual Pinball lets you make pinball machines with a bit of vb code. Really fun. Other then that I dont know much...

What's a 3D engine one could make an adventure game in?

scotch

There isn't an engine specifically designed for 3d adventure games as far as I know :(  I'm sure you could adapt one of the general purpose 3d engines to make an adventure games but you'd need to have a fair amount of programming skill I think :(

Toefur

Damn programming... I've been meaning to become good at that for years.  :-X

monster,

Blender may be something you may be interested in.  I haven' tried it yet but it seems reasonable.  It's basically a 3D drawing program.  But supossedly it has realtime  renderin and scripting ability so that you can make your own 3D games.     I was looking at it to possibly make backgrounds for AGS.   It's interesting since you can also use it to make a 3D game.  It's open source and it seems like it's actively being developed.  There is a support forum so it seems like there are quite a few users.

Why not ive it a try and let the rest of us know what ytou think of it.

I checked out Blender's site, make sure you go for version 2.25 as the game engine is not developed for the latest version yet.

yay, thank you all, you people are great  ;D . Where could I  get sphere? It sounds good. I already downloaded blender,  it looks confusing to me now but that's because I didn't read the help file yet.

http://aegisknight.org/sphere for sphere..
it's a 2d rpg engine, hardware accelerated and quite nice to use.. but it's really designed for people who like scripting or are willing to learn it, it doesn't even come with a built in inventory system or NPC movement, you have to custom script it yourself in javascript.  Although there are examples for things like that ._.

Jimi

willhowlett: Try Game Maker It uses tiles, and you can make very good platform and arcade games with it.

I'm guessing I'm going to have to get a GTA3-specced PC first!  Got to love PS2s, none of this "My graphics Card doesn't like DirectX texture Compression, I need another 600Mb of hard drive space!!"

Thank's evil, I might take you up on that offer at some point.

I agree with Jimi. Game Maker is quite good for non-adventure games.
