Boy band song

This is a song me and a friend (who wrote most of the lyrics and criticised a lot...) made for a project in school.
It's actually a kind of experiment, I wanted to make a classical boy band production, so consider this both extremely ironic and dead serious at the same time...

So here are Backdoor Boys with their number one hit: Another Day! Enjoy

I'll be glad for any kind of criticism!

To hear the rest of the tunes from the project (all by people in my class) follow this (in Swedish but you're probably smart enough to download the songs...):

loominous

Oh man that s hideous.

So I guess it passes that test.  Anyway I didn t really get the same kind of nauseating feeling boybands usually evoke n I d guess it s because there re some abnormalties in your song:

Firstly, there were no real groupsinging. Even though the verse may be sung by a single member I think the chorus requires groupsinging.

Secondly, the arrangement and song in general reminds me more of a eurovisionsongcontestcontribution from the '80s than a boybandproduction. I d say less blipblopping synthesizersounds and more soft instruments and the chordprogressions are too retarded even for a boybandproducer to come up with nowadays.

Lastly about the leadsingers voice. While the repulsive vibrato is there alright, it has a distinct sort of heavymetalsinger-singing-sensitively sound to it which isn t very suiting although almost as revolting.

Hmm... the chord progressions, bassline and reverb/delay seem to suggest a late 80's synth track rather than a boy band. The chords in particular seem too... spaced out and intellectual; most boy bands seem to stick to triads and dominant 7ths. Where's the accoustic piano? Electric pianos just don't cut it really. But apart from that, superb work, the vocal harmony is spot on (unlike several eurovision entries...) and the accoustic guitar line near the end is great. The piano line could do with a bit of beefing up imo, but that's just because I'm a pianist and not satisfied unless there's some elton john-like skills required to play a track.

You sounded like you had constipation the whole way through. And you were too close to the mic. And it was dire. So I guess it's pretty much like a boyband song. On the other hand, boyband songs tend to be about love or something rather than Pooh Pain.

Ha Ha Ha!!!! Ronan Keating - If Tomorrow Never Comes was the DIREST OF ALL DIRE SONGS... In his video where he's falling in slow motion in front of the car, singing...... CREEPY.

Ok, I might just be a little too inspired by Kraftwerk, but I have to put something I like in it.

And I'd have loved to have som nice piano parts in it, but I'm just not the pianist to make something decent enough.

And if these lyrics isn't about love I know none that is.

And there are a little groupsinging, just that I do all the voices, so it's not much of a group... So much for cloning...

Want help with some of it, Anton?
It's really great. Reminds me some of Daniel Beddingfield.

If you are curious on my voice.. then... I have recorded a bit of my song as a vocal...

Feel free to contact me :)
I can do more than that though ;)

I really liked that song. You're way better than me, you know.
I want to team up with you sometime in the nearest future ;)

I love it! Nice clean mix as well - what did you use, instruments, software, mic, mixer etc?

MachineElf

Jannar: Yeah it would be cool to do something together! Any idea of how to arrange it?

Neole: Well, most of it is made using virtual instruments, most from Reason (through Cubase).
The vocals and guitars are recorded with a common SM-57 plugged right into the soundcard (half crappy TerraTec-thingy we have at school).

Crappy? think yourself lucky, in OUR school we have a guitar with broken strings and a keyboard that doesn't work any more! I'd love to have access to those facilities :(

LGM

Reminds me alot of the theme from "The Lost Boys"..

Nice work :)

Thought you'd never ask! *feeling overjoyed*
Well, there's this method... over the net... which has gone good so far for everyone else... (this is after writing a song, and a melody, and only recordings hasn't been done..)

1. Send melody to the other
2. Send vocals to the other (?)
3. Let him add his vocals
4. Send new vocals back to the first person (till everything has been correct)
5. Insert the new vocals with the other vocals

Good thing you wrote that disclaimer about it being parody and all ;) If there's one thing i *really* can't bare to listen are boy bands :-\
Well, as far as experiment goes, it's a nice try (very well executed), however i do agree the tipical boy-bandish feel is not completely there. As it was said, it sounds more like some Eurovision song from a few years back (now it's more popular to be Abba or Ricky "shakemya**" Martin wannabe).
Some more group singing/vocals, more catchy mellody and more intimate/personal singing (hehe, little teens need to feel you are singing directly to them and about them) and you'll be ready for MTV. I'll let you decide if that's a compliment or not ;)

All in all "good" work

Well, it did make me nauseous and like boy band songs usually do but it's too "electronic" to be a boy band song. And boy band singers usually have high pitched voices that sound like they have just hit puberty. It did sound a bit forced, otherwise it's a great parody!
BTW I HATE boy band songs.
NANANANANANA ASSHOLE!

Damn you!!! :P
Hate is such a strong word. I would preferred if you said disliked instead ;)

For the equipment you used, very impressive results!

MachineElf

Hehe, I guess my voice isn't Nick Carter's...
And yeah, it might be a little too electronic, but for research I listened to some productions and they actually use a lot of those effects although not as distinct as in mine.
I agree it sounds a lot like ESC, we've got a great word for that in Sweden: Schlager. I've been thinking about sending this to them but I'll have to shorten it down to 3 mins.

Yufster: Well, my 'school' is actually a university so ambitions there are a little higher.

Neole: Thanks! Producing on a budget level is really a lot about pushing the equipment you've got as far as possible to reach the desired goal. I think people today are way too focused on equipment and too little on listening and finding a working technique with what you've got.

Jannar: That idea sounds real cool. I don't know how much studio access I will have during the summer though. I'll try to get some time though.

Hmmm ;D
I can buy you a mic if you want... :) (For computer use only though.. But it gives a good sound quality..) :D

Great! We're a band! ;D
Soon...  I hope ::)

My computer is actually way too crappy and my system way too unstable to do anything on right now. Plus I have one of those fancy studio sound cards, so a computer mic won't do the trick. I planning on buying one or two mics pretty soon, as well as a new damn computer...
