As I said, it worked fine for me.

Edit: I guess the problem is solved as nobody mentioned it anymore.

WOW!!!  :o That intro rocks!  ;D

I'm stuck though:
Spoiler: ShowHide
How can I get one of those stones on the beach? I've got the bottle with piece of paper, and the liane. What do I need to do now?

Well I need to give you something for a 16 MB download  ;D

Here's a little hint for you:
Spoiler: ShowHide
Did you already take the piece of paper out of the bottle? Now if you do that ... what will remain in the bottle? And what does the stone seller want?  And there is one more object you can find right now ... it's hidden somewhere

WOW! Excellent!
Second part?

I have found a little bug:
When interacting with the scribbling in Quizz Island instead of just looking at it,
the quizz game scene is skipped, and the inventory item will not appear in the inventory, but Roger will refuse to go back to te quizz, so you can never obtain that item.

Some comments I found necessary to mention:
1.  it is a bit inconvenient the cursor is changed to walk mode when clicked
2. finding the hole on the altar is kinda pixel-hunting
3. the doctor is staying for too short time when selling rocks
4. it would be more confortable if the inventory screen could be dismissed by pressing again the TAB key
5. at the beach (near the big rock, and near the fishing rod) it is difficult to distinguish the possible exits on the same side
6. at the fishing rod it is difficult to realise you can walk up to the top of the hill
7. the solution for the puzzle of getting the rock, is not a very rational one, you should emphasize more the uselessness of the empty bottle when looking at it on the inventory screen, I think

and attention:
8. carbon is required to prepare gunpowder, so you should provide some place to burn some paper or wood.

And about the easter eggs: how can I know if I found them? I think I found some, but not sure...

Re: The Draft Drifter Who Dashed Doctor Dunno

P. S. I especially liked the bomb preparation puzzle  :D
Great one!

Many thanks for your comments Sztyopek! I think the player's feedback is the best thing a game designer can get!

Second part?
I hope you won't have to wait another three years for it.

Quote
I have found a little bug
damn ... doesn't sound so litte to me  ;) It was a shortcut for me to skip the whole quizz beach scene ... and then I forgot to remove it. I'll get it fixed and upload a new version as soon as possible.

Quote
1.  it is a bit inconvenient the cursor is changed to walk mode when clicked
Hm...we really tried to make the interface as convenient as possible ... and we thought that right clicking all the way to the walk cursor every time you looked at an object isn't that convenient  ;)  btw...did you use the Mouse Wheel?

Quote
2. finding the hole on the altar is kinda pixel-hunting
I'll change it in the updated version tomorrow.

Quote
3. the doctor is staying for too short time when selling rocks
my betatesters said that as well ... don't know why I didn't change it ...  but I will now.

Quote
4. it would be more confortable if the inventory screen could be dismissed by pressing again the TAB key
You're right ... I'll change it.

Quote
5. at the beach (near the big rock, and near the fishing rod) it is difficult to distinguish the possible exits on the same side
I know ... but how should I mark them? I figured that you can easily walk between those 3 screens so I didn't bother with it.

Quote
6. at the fishing rod it is difficult to realise you can walk up to the top of the hill
What would you propose? Should the plateau be a hotspot with a name displayed in the top GUI bar?

Quote
7. the solution for the puzzle of getting the rock, is not a very rational one, you should emphasize more the uselessness of the empty bottle when looking
The German version does emphazise it ... I guess we didn't do a good translation job here (I'll change it for the next version)

Quote
8. carbon is required to prepare gunpowder, so you should provide some place to burn some paper or wood.
If part 2 requires the assembly of a bomb again we'll definitely keep that in mind  ;D

About the easter eggs
Spoiler: ShowHide
The first one shows you one of the backgrounds in the drawing style of part two. The second one is a note written by the doctor revealing part of the story of part 2. It's in the room with the sandcastle

Did you find them?

btw ... really good job. You finished a game which took us three years ... in three hours!  ;D
Thanks again for the comments!

A possible solution would be to draw some bushes between the two different paths to optically seperate them.
I probably would have never found the plateau with the fishing rod if I hadn't read about it in this thread.

@Justas:
Sorry for replying so late.
Spoiler: ShowHide
To get the bottle go north in the start screen (the one with the palm tree). You will come to a beach with a big cliff. Walk to the top and interact with the fishing rod ... you'll get a bottle with a note in it. Just take the note out of the bottle and your set.

@khrismuc:
I like your paintover. If the plateau is really so hard to find I'll consider changing that background in the next version!
Did you already finish the game khrismuc? How did you like it?

Very nice game.  Really enjoyed playing it.  Great art work and music.  But I am stuck at the end.  Professors note said 2-2-5 but when I press that number on pad to get boat, nothing happens....... Am I missing something here?  Other people in forum got different numbers on their notes........Thank you

As I remember, I found on the doctor's note his favourite numbers were 3, 4, and 5 (or 2-3-4, or something similar), and it worked.
But before I found the note I had tried every combination, and no one had worked... maybe I forgot some combinations to try out?

Re: The Draft Drifter Who Dashed Doctor Dunno
« Reply #18 on: 21 Mar 2005, 10:27 »
Hi everybody. Thanks for playing the game! Really, the whole team appreciates it!  :D

I just had a look into the skript and figured out that there really is a bug with the numbers at the pole.

Because of people like Sztyopek  :D (no offense)  we skripted so that you can't just go to the pole for the first time and just work through every single combination ... find the correct one ... and finish the game without ever visiting the bar.
You need to have the note from the professor in order for the correct code (which is generated randomly at the start of every new game) to work.
And here is the BUG: you need to have the inventory item (note) EXACTLY ONCE (because that's how the script checks it at the moment). However, you can interact with the unconcious professor as often as you want and you get another note every time ....
To solve the bug you will need to load a previous save game (if you don't have one you can download it right here) and interact with the knocked down professor only once ... type in the numbers at the pole ... push the round green button ... and you should be able to finish the game.

You can also download version 1.1 of the game which fixes another minor things as well right here.

I really hope this bug didn't ruin you gameplay.

@Pablo:
Regarding part 2: as I said we already have the story done (and yes, this time it's a real story  :D ). However, the whole thing is bigger than part 1. We have 2 playable characters, many many more backgrounds ... much more animation.
Right now I am forcing my team to make a complete storyboard first so that we have a clear idea of the puzzles, the backgrounds we need and all that.
I'm glad you liked the game.

I just wanted to say that while there are a few problems with the game [mostly knowing where one can walk off the sides of the screen] I loved this game, it was funny and had a lot of style.

I especially loved how the opening theme started in Midi and then went into full mp3 [or ogg, if you will]

I can't wait for more.

Finished the game. It was much better than I anticipated from looking at the screenshots. The strongest point in this game was the dialog. It held the most humor, and the most enjoyment. Second to that, were the well made cutscenes. The puzzles were okay, the one with the plank was probably the most ingenious.

The only problem have already been mentioned, and I downloaded the more buggy version, so I'm not about to complain about what you may have fixed.

It was a fun game. Congradulations.

-MillsJROSS

+Server problems fixed - files downloadable again+

@MrColossal:
Yes, that was the effect we wanted to achieve :D Start the intro with cheap midi music and then BAM ... high end quality, haha  :)
We really intended to put more (game) graphics in the intro. However, it turned out to be too complitated and the text fittet the music perfectly.

We will keep the problem with walking off edges in mind for part two!
Thanks for your interest in the game.

@MillsJROSS:
We are really glad that you tell us how you felt about the dialog in the game. We are from Germany and did the whole game in German, first. It was a really hard job to translate all this stuff into English afterwards. Because it should sound like common English and not like German translated into English. And then we had to translate the jokes (which was the most difficult thing). However, the quiz beach scene was the most funniest to translate because we wanted Kurt to really talk incorrect English. I'm really pround of my translators and proof readers. The did a great job!
I also think we are the first AGS game with 16:9 cutscenes  8)
Thanks for playing the game!

This game made me laugh more than any other AGS game in a long, long time. Especially the quiz part and the disco scenes were wonderful. Puzzle-wise it's really not my cup of tea, but I managed to get through with a few peeks in the .exe file (and the help of a German dictionary). A few thoughts on the puzzles that annoyed me:

Spoiler: ShowHide
Why do you have to remove the plank to fall into the water, why not just jump? There's no logical reason for why you can't leave the telescope at the top of the cliff while fetching the plank. Why does the girl need to drink the milk, when you could empty the glass anywhere to find the coin?

I did find a bug though, where you could have one plank in your inventory while another was still lying across the stream, thus allowing you to use the telescope without visiting the quiz master. I wasn't able to pinpoint the exact cause, but I think it involved picking up the telescope while having the plank in your inventory, but I'm not sure.

Overall, great writing, wonderful use of music and great comedic timing.

Thanks for your feedback, GarageGothic!

You're, the puzzles can be annoying. I think that is because we didn't think of them before starting with the creation of the game.
We drew the first background and placed Roger in it. After a few backgrounds were created we tried to think of ways how to implement puzzles into them.

Quote
I did find a bug though, where you could have one plank in your inventory while another was still lying across the stream

One of my beta testers mentioned this problem as well. However I'm still unable to figure out what it is. The script looks fine to me.
Well, I guess I can leave this bug in the game. At least it prevents people from wondering why they just can't jump into the water  ;)

Thanks again for your comments!

Can you help me because I'm really stuck on this? I poured some of the sulpur and nitre into the half of the coconut. I want to attach the fuse to it because if I try to use it alone he says its not enough power. The problem is when I try to use the glue wilth the fuse or the glue with the coconut he says, "glue is not useful here." This puzzles me.
All You Need is Love!

Hi desimaui.
Thanks for playing! :D
I think you're just missing a small detail. After sulphur and nitre are in the coconut you have to wrap the ROPE (not the fuze but the rest of the plain liana) around the coconut.
Then you can stick the fuze to it and finally apply a bit of glue on top.
Hope this helps.

btw. I was on Maui once and I really loved it!  So beautiful.

Please let me know how you liked the game, when you're finished!

Wow, that was the most fun I've had with completely random puzzles in a long time.
Just when the artwork hits a new low, you redeem it with something like the disco sequence.
This game certainly keeps you on your toes.

May I suggest some more in-game hints for the puzzles?
For example

Spoiler: ShowHide

Some text on the altar to explain why to pour the milk in the hole.
I don't know how anyone would ever think to pick up the plank when standing on it. Why not just jump in the water in the first place? Ingenious? No. Ridiculous? Mmm.
etc for every puzzle

Really, this game would be much more entertaining if it was much less frustrating.
I had to look up the solutions to nearly everything in this thread.

Laugh out loud funny at times.

Oh, the division...
Still waiting for Purity of the Surf II

Quote
Wow, that was the most fun I've had with completely random puzzles in a long time.
Glad to hear that!  :D

We'll definitely follow your suggestions about making the puzzles less frustrating in part II !!
It's a shame. I really think that some people didn't even make it to the disco scene or the bomb explosion cutscene because they gave up on the very beginning, when they didn't know what to do with the plank.   :'(

Perhaps we should put a walkthrough into the zip-file.

By the way: I recently got this PM:

Quote
Hello,

I'm an editor of a freeware section in a czech paper magazine about computer games, Level. Level is the best-selling gaming mag in the Czech republic, you can find more info about it at www.Level.cz. I'd like to ask you, if you'd agree with publishing your currently released game - winner of the ATC - on our cover CD and/or DVD in the May issue of Level. Is it possible?
P.S.: If you want a copy of the issue, just submit an adress for we could send it to you...
Tomas Krajca

Well I don't know if this is serious or a joke (I don't know Czech so I can't read the homepage of that magazine).
I'm also a bit concerned about the music in our game. As I said, I own legal copies of all the songs, but I still don't know if it's legal to distribute the game via a magazine (which one has to pay for).

And last but not least I don't know what "winner of the ATC" means ... was there some kind of contest I don't know about?

Any info is greatly appreciated!
Stefan
