with the release of blender 2.79 this free piece of software is getting better and better and there is no better time to start getting into blender than now (great, this line always works, I just have to update the blender version number :D). More and more AGSers are using blender, myself included, so think of this thread as a place to share your blender artworks aside from the critiques longe, a place to ask questions about blender, no matter if for your game backgrounds, lighting, or just some animation you do beside gamemaking and as a place to share and read about interesting tricks and shortcut for using blender.

Buckethead wrote a blender plugin to automate exporting gfx for AGS games:

The new denoising feature for the cycles render engine is absolutely awesome. As the name hints at it denoises the resulting rendered image a lot.

jump to #1:30 in the video to see the comparison!

blender is getting better at aniating 2d as well with v2.79, just look at this video demonstrating the many uses of the grease pencil and cool distortion maps over images and smooth interpolation of these.

and I found a cool Addon for blender that turns the edit mode into destructive like in sketchup. And it is called Destructive Extrude.

and the 19kb of python code are free! But you are encouraged to give the author some money if it really helps you.

Do you use any interesting addons for blender? I wouldn't mind updating the first post with all kind of interesting and useful blender addons and other blender related stuff for people new to blender.

KyriakosCH

Nice; i didn't know about the denoising feature. I will try it for large-scale renders :)

just some 3d doodle in blender :)
36 frames.
0 ideas how to use that in a game 8-) :-D

It could be the overlord of some personal nightmare, though a more radiozoic form would work better as that ^^

cool organic forms. Would be interesting to precedurally generate something like that in blender :)

I am quite smitten w/ Blender myself.

I still cannot understand how it's free but I'm not complaining.

I mentioned it in another thread here (can't seem to find it) but once you get over the interface hurdle, which is substantial, it's an amazing and powerful program.

Here are a few examples of things I was able to do really quickly:

(still very WIP)

this is great stuff Darth. Such a fluffy towel! Is the NES Controller rendered in blender render or cycles?

lorenzo

I remember trying Blender many years ago, but I couldn't get used to the interface.

Great images, Darth!

Ali

This is fun. I love blender, and I use it all the time to add elements to video / animation. But I never seem to create any finished scenes. The best I can offer is an unfinished magic lantern. You can see exactly the point where I got distracted, because it has no back or top. Or slides.

ManicMatt

Wow guys! Even the unfinished stuff is impressive.

While I'm nowhere near your levels, I did learn how to use Blender purely to render a city, with a zeppelin and cars etc,  for my music video.

Definitely cycles! I don't remember the sample count but it's probably around 600. I find little difference in render quality between 600 and 1000. Just takes longer.

I am all too familiar with that! Still impressive in its unfinished state. The metals are particularly pretty!

Still pretty impressive! Did you have fun making it?

ManicMatt

Thanks! Yeah there was some fun in making the little details like the car park sign and the HMV storefront with stuff I like in the window or self plugging haha.

I wanted more moving cameras but it would take forever to render just a still on my 2014 laptop! Still, I achieved what I had set out to do! My music has also improved immensely from the days when Helm was a forum regular and didn't hold back on his opinion of my music haha. He was harsh but made constructive criticism amongst the mean words, so I did take something from it.

I will make some of my models available for free, in the following address: (the files will have .blend and .3ds form)

https://gumroad.com/byzantinemaker

Currently there is only the Holy Apostles byzantine church (the one in Thessalonica, Greece), which isn't free, but in the future i will upload a few free ones ;)

I should learn how to code python into blender just to cut up an actual movie and arrange all the single frames onto that arraycurve too... maybe not  :-D

still playing around with the colors and ambient lights...

^Nice :)

I don't know how to do that. (never used 2d shapes as a start; i'd edit a 3d one to go 2, then manually alter it further, but never used the set curves)

Remember that new controller from some time back if I'm not mistaken? I just love it. I'm still crazy for Poser and even though it has its limits when it comes to modeling you can still do quite a lot of stuff if you learn the software

Here's a flag I did with the wind force tool for example. Not super amazing but still quite nice :D (Sorry for the gif quality)

Here's a pretty cool animation with a dragon I did as well

and something toony!
