AGS Awards 2018 - For Your Consideration
« on: 05 Jan 2019, 13:29 »
Have you made a game in 2018 and want it to compete in the AGS Awards 2018? This is the topic where to showcase it!
Post a database link, a brief description and some pictures (thumbnails preferred, here is an excellent FYC post from last year).

Do not be shy, by posting your game you are helping the players who will take some of their time to play/nominate/vote!

Usual remarks:
  • please include a link to your games page on the AGS games database
  • if you think a game deserves mention but the author isn't around, post a FYC for them! The more worthy games we get here, the better it is for everyone!
  • this thread is for FYC posts only, if you want to discuss the awards go here!

Post your games here before nominations start. The earlier you post, the more time people have to play your game!

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

The Knobbly Crook - The Complete Misadventure
A ridiculous journey into a fantasy world where Rock, Paper, and Scissors are forces of nature.

As we join our woefully inept hero, O'Sirus, he finds himself on trial for all the crimes you have not yet committed together. Retell his absurd story as his journey begins, finding himself a stowaway on a ship that is half horse, half boat, and half whale. Every moment that passes takes you further from your goal--the Knobbly Crook. It's up to you to torment the Drafthorse's unsuspecting crew in an attempt to alter their course. Once you reach moist land, the real adventure begins... and continues for rather a long while... and concludes after quite a bit of shameful nonsense.

For the non-adventure game category I would like to put forward Space Tunneler Deluxe.  This is an updated version of an old MAGS game I made with several key enhancements, including autosave and high score table.  It's a retro arcade game where you have to, you know, avoid crashing into walls.  With the way the controls work however, you need to employ strategy as well as have decent reflexes.

Adventure: Welcome to the Genre

Thalia James' job in the Computer Game Maintenance Squad is seldom an easy one. After one of her assignments nearly ends in disaster, she is asked to track down five characters believed to be responsible for a series of criminal activities throughout the 2D adventure genre. With that to grapple with as well the mysterious condition from her past that has inexplicably resurfaced, the first annual Adventure Game Awards and the grand opening of something called the Mega-Game, this adventure is bound to be anything but mundane.

Adventure: Welcome to the Genre is the sequel to Adventure: The Inside Job and Adventure: All in the Game, and is the third and final* installment in the Thalia James trilogy. Like the previous installments, expect cameos from various characters, places and items from the adventure game genre as you journey through a number of fantastic, puzzle-filled locales, all the while attempting to save the genre from complete destruction. (Again.)

For your consideration:

https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2292/

The Gateway to Vespuccia, the City of Air and Light, Lamplight City—the thriving port city of New Bretagne is a beacon of progress and industrial advancement in the New World. Yet beneath the promises of a shining 19th-century future, the city rests upon foundations of poverty, class struggle, and crime.

For police detective turned private investigator Miles Fordham, Lamplight City's shadowy corners are just part of the territory. But with his former partner constantly speaking to him from beyond the grave, his grip on sanity is slowly loosening. Can Miles find justice for his clients and track down his partner’s killer before his entire world comes apart?

Lamplight City is a detective adventure set in an alternate steampunk-ish "Victorian" past.

Navigate the filth and squalor of Cholmondeley, AKA "The Chum."

Investigate the homes of the fabulously wealthy residents of Lyon.

Explore the borough of Gascogne, inspired by New Orleans's French Quarter.

Search for clues in Worcester, the working class part of town.

Interrogate suspects and witnesses in a closeup view.

The dead hold just as many secrets as the living.

The residents of Lamplight City make their voices heard.

Summary:
Private Detective is a procedurally generated murder mystery game, where you must solve randomly generated crimes by finding leads, questioning suspects, and gathering evidence from the crime scene to compare with samples found in the homes of the suspects. It plays a lot like an adventure game, but with a lot more deduction and a lot less inventory object puzzles.

I'll put up my MAGS game "Strawman Bombing Disposal" for a possible entry into Best Puzzles.

The puzzles are pretty hard which is probably why, apart from two people (that I know of) who figured them out, what I got back mostly as feedback was "I pushed the buttons and got blown up and quit."

I designed this game to be quite hard as an alternative to the current trend of "a game is only good if anyone can finish it". There's nothing wrong with games like that, don't get me wrong, but I felt that a real challenge every now and then might be a nice change.

It's the kind of bash-your-head-against-the-puzzles-until-you-get-that-CLICK-moment-and-everything-becomes-clear that a lot of us grew up on. There are hints, if you listen to the evil villain carefully, but the rest is pretty much pure logic plus a bit of perseverance.

Everyone who has completed the game, the two people I mentioned above and some friends that played the game in front of me live at a mate's gaming night, all said that the puzzles were hard but logical and fair once figured out.

The puzzles are all 100% original of my own devising and a lot of thought went into them on my bike rides to and from work.

SO, AS MY ENTRANT FOR BEST PUZZLES:

STRAWMAN  BOMBING  DISPOSAL

You are crossing a Washington D.C. road when a truck pulls away revealing something shocking.

This game is not meant to be easy. Only a very few will probably have the patience to complete it.

The game starts and ends suddenly as I wanted it to feel like you are abruptly thrown into a situation and then right back out of it.

You can click to skip a bunch of diaglog and/or cutscenes by clicking the mouse to cut to the chase, but I would advise you to listen to and watch everything all the way through at least once.

There is no save game function or checkpoints system at this time but once you know how to solve a puzzle it is pretty easy to repeat the solution within a few seconds.

I will be making a Tips And Hints thread of my own for the game so I would appreciate it if noone else does so for now.

Controls: Mouse only + ESC to hard-quit from the game.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO SAVE WASHINGTON?!

Hi AGS people :)

I made my AGS debut in 2018 with the two short games "Cyborg Seppuku" and "The Goat Crone":

CYBORG SEPPUKU

A cyberpunk tale of marriage and selfdestruction.

You're a cyborg and your wife has left you. To find her you must leave "The Structure" - a dystopian city in which you are imprisoned.
The only way of escaping The Structure is to rid yourself of your implants and become a plain-skin.

The Goat Crone
An occult Christmas tale of family love and dark rituals.

Alma has to prepare the yule ham while her father is out in the forest.
But the nightmarish myth of The Goat Crone haunts her and her baby brother.
