I know this means there are now two Broken Sword threads on the front page, but I thought this deserved it's own discussion. You can find a link to the press release at www.revolution.co.uk.

Personally, I find it hard to really see this as a particularly positive thing. Given that BS3 was a weak seller and didn't impress too many fans or critics, it seems a bit odd for them to jump into another installment so soon, especially considering they admit the story was supposed to be over. Does this mean the Beneath A Steel Sky sequel is on hold or cancelled?

I can't help thinking that they're only doing this because they feel further milking their once profitable series is their only commercial option at this point. Maybe the game will be good, but it's still disappointing to see this once excellent company seemingly reduced to a cycle of endless franchising.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Loom
Thu 19/05/2005 20:10:40
A lovely copy of the CD version of Loom cropped up on ebay recently. I figured I'd have a go at grabbing it, planning to allocate ten of my fine English pounds to the cause! This evening, with two minutes of the auction to go, it was still only at £2.50, so I assumed I wouldn't have too much trouble getting it. And then what happens? Then THIS happens:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8191182382

I guess some people really do love that game!

Which leads neatly into this thread: Does anyone else here except me (and those two excitable rich bidders) enjoy this game as much as me? Like Zak and Last Crusade, it's one of the Lucasarts games people hardly ever seem to talk about.

I only played it for the first time a few weeks ago, and I thought it had a great elegant atmosphere and was generally a top notch afternoons entertainment. A lot different from anything else Lucasarts ever tried to do, and all the more interesting because of that. Yeah it's short, but I *like* short games when I'm not paying a fortune for them. Reading about the binned sequels on Mix'n'Mojo makes me a little sad that we'll never see any more of the game's odd universe.

Also, it's probably the most collectable Lucasarts game ever, what with it being in so many different versions and all. One day I must own the gorgeous-looking CD-vocal version, not to mention the apparently excellent FM-Towns version. The latter seems to be impossible to find in any form though.

I know some here like it, I know some here hate it - any thoughts on this game either way?

General Discussion / Webcomics
Mon 21/02/2005 00:09:05
These really are the worst things ever, aren't they? Discuss.

Nah, that's not really what I'm asking, but before I get to the point let me self-indulgently recount my sad, sad tale.

The idea that webcomics could actually be any good at all only occurred to me whenÃ, someone here pointed out Kid Radd, which I swiftly took to my heart. After that I stumbled on Dinosaur Comics, which I also thought was just wonderful and right up my alley in most respects. From there I found Pokey The Penguin and The Perry Bible Fellowship, neither of which blew my mind or anything, but were both easily funny and inventive enough to reaffirm my faith that webcomics were 'actually pretty cool'.

Shortly afterwards I realised that just about every other webcomic on the internet is unfunny, idiotic, and clearly written by people so in love with themselves that their every pore is clogged with the pure essence of smugness. At that very second of profound realisation I completely lost interest in any webcomics that I didn't already know I liked.

But now I feel like reliving that weird feeling of finding some new comic I like and spending a few obsessive hours working through the entire archive. But I can't seem to find any I don't hate on impulse!

Point starts here: Does anyone know any webcomics that, like the ones above, are good, original and written in a way that suggests the author is someone I wouldn't want to punch? If you have any suggestions I'd also like to hear exactly why you like them, rather then just links. Well expressed opinions are the best things ever, and by golly! they might even trigger a 'discussion' of some sort!

I was just wondering: does anyone know know any statistics that show the overall sales of specific adventure games (I'm mainly thinking Lucasarts, Searra etc) over the years?

It's common knowledge when the commercial peaks and declines of the genre were, generally speaking, but I'd love to see some hard stats just to see exactly what the trends were, and to get an impression of the relative popularity of individual games.

I'd also be interested in exactly how much these games actually cost to produce, but that's maybe asking a little much.

So, does anyone have any info?

Hello darlings! Apologies if this is too 'techy' a question for this particular forum, but I wasn't sure where else to put it.

See, I recently found an old Mac copy of Day Of The Tentacle left over from the Mac-using days of my youth, and I want to play it. I want to play it BAD. Luckily I found a lovely thread on this very subject giving detailed instructions on how to run DOTT in ScummVM.

Now, there doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the way I'm following their instructions, as I've managed to convert Mac demos of Sam & Max and Full Throttle and have them running perfectly on my PC through Scummvm, but for DOTT nothing seems to work.

Here is my problem: when I use the 'rescumm'Ã,  tool to convert the DOTT Data file it unpacks 52 .lfl files, but when it tries to extract the 'monster.sou' file I get a message saying "ERROR: Could not allocate 268965339 of memory.!" (if this's refering to hard drive space, I should have more then enough). It extracts enough for ScummVM to recognise the original Maniac Mansion (listed as a seperate game), but nothing else.

Apologies again if this is in the wrong place, but I posted a similar message on the ScummVM forums a few weeks ago and haven't had a reply, and this is the only other place I could think of where someone might be able to help.

I'd REALLY appreciate any ideas, if anyone has any experience with this kind of thing. Thanks!
