General Discussion / Re: Wii

The problem for me is that for me the sound 'wee' when used as a noun is inextricably linked with piss, which makes it hard to look at the name objectively. If it was pronounced "why" or even "ooee" it might be easier. I'll be very interested in how they market the thing to english speakers. I have a hard time seeing a machine with a name like that becoming a runaway success.

Incidentally I remember getting the exact same feeling when I heard the titles to the first two Star Wars prequels. Unfortunately I can't honestly say the years have made the name 'Attack Of The Clones' much more appealing, but you know... we'll have to wait and see.

Nintendo are brilliant but also regularly so mind-numbingly idiotic that I really wish someone would go down to their offices and slap some sense into every single person that works there. Their Fisher-Price approach to the Gamecube was wrong-headed and I suspect seriously harmed that machine's credibilty and commercial viability. An abstract name like 'Wii' could've worked fine, had they chose a word that doesn't mean friggin' "piss". I can't help thinking they've pointlessly doomed the fortunes of a potentially excellent console.

I was amazed to discover the existence of Heart Of The Alien last year. I was all ready to call it a lost classic! Then it turned out to be pretty much crap. For all its flaws Another World will forever rule, however.

Accidents do not produce the intricacy that we see in the air that we see around us. Only intelligent design does!Truly, anyone who understands the science of air must excersize an enormous amount of faith to believe that all of this occured by chance!

It would certainly be an astonishing coincidence - were Earth the only planet in the universe. As it is, with untold millions and billions of planets out there, the event of such seemingly unlikely occurances becomes somewhat less impressive to me.

What I meant by 'no effect' is that Lars' campaign against napster and file sharing six or seven years ago hasn't prevented anyone from doing it if they want, meaning it's a bit of a petty waste of time for people to carry on grinding their axes over it.

Tend to agree that the band has gone off the rails, though last week I finally bought Load off ebay for a small sum and it turned out to be a pretty enjoyable album, if gruesomely overlong. Reload is totally hit and miss, admittedly. If they'd made a 50 minute single record out of those two they could've made one of their best. They didn't truly lose it until St. Anger in my view.

People can try to justify it to themselves any way they like, but at the end of the day you download copyrighted music, you're stealing it. I've downloaded quite a bit over the years, but I'm not going to sit there and pretend i'm on any kind of moral highground by doing it.

Also: these are things I am sick of hearing, regarding Metallica: people obsessing over that stupid Napster issue which happened years ago and had no real effect on most people one way or another; people overhyping Cliff Burton's importance to the band; people moaning about the clickity drums on Justice, which are in fact really cool; people moaning about what a sellout piece of crap the Black Album supposedly is; people moaning about the lack of guitar solos on St. Anger, as if having solos would really make all those lame songs any better. Metallica are often pretty great but their fans can all go to hell.

My problem with the Dark Crystal was the the actual story isn't really that memorable. I rewatched it a couple of years back but I still can't remember what it's really about. It had one of the creepiest and most 'real' feeling worlds of those 80's fantasies, but I reckon most of the others were better.

And man, people can be such dogmatic luddites when it comes to CGI. It's depressing that the involvement of the hugely talented Tartakovsky is being overlooked because of one of the technologies he's using to make the thing. CGI is not the end of the world, it's just another way of doing things! Judge it after it's done.

David Elsewhere is unbelievable. He was one of the Gene Kelly stand ins in that cool Singin' In The Rain car ad, if any of you have ever seen it.

And Autechre are brilliant, though i didn't recognise the track in the video...

"I suppose I just get defensive very easily when I'm called a liar."

Did anyone ever actually call you that? Reading this thread I don't think you were lying about your story at all. I do, however strongly suspect your girlfriend likes to playfully indulge your clearly passionate faith in your abilities of the mind. Funny how with both this and that only-slightly-more-credible hypnotism situation, the entire burdon of proof lies on this same girl, don't you think?

Fun test, but I've got to agree with esper and Yakspit that the self-satisfied smugness of these things is obnoxious. It always seems to be more about people trying to prove themselves as objectively smarter then most other people then in anything higher.

Exciting fact: "Spiders" was the first non-compilation album i ever purchased, back in '96 or whenever. I haven't listened to it in about five years but I still have fairly fond memories of most of that album. Neighbourhood and You And Me Against The World were as good as Female Of The Species.

From what I hear their decline in popularity was helped along by some stupid legal wranglings which meant they couldn't release anything for four or five years, after which the whole Britpop scene had imploded and noone cared anymore. I seem to remember when they came back they'd pretty much ditched the quirkyness that made them stand out in the first place, which didn't help matters.

Kind of an appropriate choice, given that they got Fripp's old chum Eno to do the Windows 95 theme.

My problem wasn't that I expect BS4 to be poor, it was the fact that Revolution only seems interested in milking a single franchise.

As it happens I was poking around their forum some months back and a guy from the company revealed that in the current industry climate they're simply unable to produce new IPs while still keeping full control over them. Hence, all we're likely to see from Revolution from now on is sequels to its previous games. Sad situation, really.

General Discussion / Re: Serenity NOW!

I like the Firefly series, and I enjoyed Serenity as a spin-off of that. But the fan hyping of the movie has been ridiculous. It's not the greatest sci-fi film ever - it's not the greatest *anything* ever - It's just an enjoyable, but pretty generic sci-fi action flick that for me failed to translate a lot of the appeal of tv series to the big screen. I'd give it a 3/5 at best.

Admitting my love of prog rock bands Yes, King Crimson and Gentle Giant wouldn't do me any favours in most trendy music fan circles. I'm not ashamed of it, though - they're great bands! Hopefully my severe hatred of fellow prog-rockers ELP and early Genesis tips the scales back a little. Actually on the whole I openly say everything I like is great, and that anyone who disagrees can piss off to hell.

I really shouldn't post this, seeing as arguing about when the Simpsons started to go wrong is third only to the Star Wars prequels and the pros and cons of George W Bush on the list of tedious internet debates in which participation should be punishable by death.

But...saying the Simpsons sucked after series five has now taken the no.1 spot as the single most extreme and incorrect opinion on the Simpsons' decline.

The truth of the matter:

Season 1 = Enjoyable but still obviously finding its feet.
Seasons 2 - 8 = Godlike genius.
Seasons 9 - 10 = Cracks starting to show, but still consistently funny on the whole.
Seasons 11 - present = varying degrees of deadening, near-unwatchable horror, with the rare funny line and even rarer consistently solid episode.

Though to be fair i haven't watched too many post season 10 episodes. But most of the ones I have seen have been bad enough to make sure i'll probably never watch one again.

General Discussion / Re: Great game music
Tue 13/09/2005 12:01:12
Yeah, Katamari Damacy (which i consider godlike in almost every aspect of its creation), most Mario/Zelda games, most stuff created by Michael Land, Peter McConnel and Nobuo Uematso - all great examples.

Also if you don't mind me getting a bit pre-1990 for a sec, I'll always have time for the excellent music provided by the amstrad/spectrum games Dizzy, Treasure Island Dizzy, Glider Rider and Wriggler.

I bet I could write a great essay about game music. Shame no couse I ever did gave me the opportunity. Damn those non-game music related courses I wasted my life doing!

If these really have every single game in each series i'll just have to buy them all to hell. I've still only ever played a handful of Sierra adventures.
