General Discussion / Moving House thread
Fri 26/09/2008 09:29:18
This is a topic everyone will come across in there lives, at any age.

I've been doing a lot of planning lately and am moving myself interstate. From Sydney NSW to the Gold Coast QLD.

I have my own property which I'm renting out in Sydney, which is in a good area and gets me a good return, I'm positively geared, if anyone understands, so in a good position.

I have already lined up a job on the Gold Coast, which I can start whenever I like, which I picked a date, and am organising myself around that. So will be relocating myself to a completely new area.

I do have friends there, and really good old friends that will be so good to see regularly again, but not as many people I can just visit randomly, but there is still phone and internet i guess.

It was also more an Idea, 'I don't get time for holidays with my work, why not turn my work into a holiday,' I'm actually getting paid more with the new job too, and will get more holidays, so everything seems to be working out for the better, and in these strange times, I still seem to be able to pull thru. I've done it tough at times but things are looking up.

I'm so looking forward to meeting lots of new people, it is such an open friendly culture up there, you only have to go there once to know what I'm talking about.

I plan to keep moving north till I collect everything I want on the way (ie wife and kids) and find a place to settle that we can all enjoy, prob somewhere more tropical. Well sounds like a good plan, and I will make it work.

It will be a big change but I've gone about everything so far, so casually, it will probably be a good transition.

What are other peoples moving experiences? or reasons for moving?

I'm not a big Soccer fan, but Australia has finally made it into the world cup. They lost the first game 1-0 to Uruguay in Uruguay and won the home game 1-0. So it went to 30 mins extra time. Australia dominated the game almost completely but couldn't finish it off.

Pity it came down to a penalty shoot out, but who cares, Australia is in.

Just been up in Cairns in the tropical north of Australia again for a brief holiday, about 2,500km 1,550 miles north of Sydney (where I live). Had great weather and it's pretty consistent temperatures (20-29C  68-84F) every day.

Just thought I'd post a few sample photo's of my trip:

Catching a boat out to Fitzroy Island, 45min trip from Cairns in the Great Barrier Reef

Ariving in tropical paradise 8)

Going for a walk eventually up to the summit, quite a steep track but some awesome views

I could have sworn I saw Herman down near those rocks

Sunset

The beaches around this Island are made up of coral, quite large pieces

Leaving the Island :'(

Back on the mainland I did a little trip to a place called Kuranda on a scenic old fashioned railway

Barron Falls

The Barron River

Catching the Skyrail back to Cairns which is fairly long and goes over the top of lush rainforest

That's just a fraction of the photo's I took, I found it hard to narrow it down, and all the sizes are reduced from 1600 * 1200 and reduced quality to save download time, so the large versions are much better.

Hope someone gets some enjoyment from them.

If you missed my previous holidays, you can see them here:

Anyone had a play around with this cool program before?

World Wind
http://learn.arc.nasa.gov/worldwind/

it's really only for broadband users as you need a highspeed connection to use it and the program to download is about 260MB, but It's pretty cool, you can pretty much zoom into anywhere on the earth and get pretty close too.

I just had a little muck around with it to see if I could find my house, I could get close but it was a bit too pixelly.

This one is pretty much the Sydney area

This one is zoomed in more to Sydney Harbour, you can see the Harbour Bridge and Opera house around the centre of the pic

I live near the bottom left corner of this one, and I'd love to live near the top right corner, maybe one day.

I reduced the size and quality of the pics to fit in the post.

Well worth the download if you are interested in geography and maps stalking

feel free to post your city

General Discussion / 'ken Jury Duty
Wed 20/10/2004 09:26:42
I get home from work today and what do I find in my letterbox? cool, a cheque for some dividends from some shares I have, then a Jury Summons.

Has anyone ever been on a jury before?

This is the second time it's happened to me, most people probably go through life without it ever happening, I wish it was the lottery instead (I guess it's more likely if you buy a ticket).

The first time I never even got to go into the court room, the case I was assigned to was over before it started, the person pleaded guilty and the case was dismissed so I got to go home after just sitting around for a few hours.

That time I was unemployed and I was looking forward to at least having a chance to do something.

This time I just don't want the hassle.

You can fill out a form and give some excuse that they can consider, but it is compulsory to attend if they think it's not a good enough excuse. If you don't turn up you can get fined. Work is not an acceptable excuse. (although I'm sure if you were a brain surgeon they would let you off)

It also doesn't necessarily mean you will get to be on the jury, once it's your groups turn, if either party doesn't like the look of you, or doesn't think you're the right type to get their person off (or find them guilty) they can get rid of you, they do this to each person until they have selected the 12 that they both agree with.

It is estimated that this case will go for 3 weeks, so I really hope I don't get selected.

If anyone can think of any ways I can limit my chances of being selected, please tell me, or atleast make up some cool stories.

Just got back from my little trip up the NSW coast.

Started on sunday morning making the trip up to Byron Bay (a possible mittens location)

It was a 9 hour drive from Sydney about 780km (485 miles) North

It's much closer to Brisbane, about 160km (100 miles) South

I arrived just before sunset:

Looking south from Cape Byron (the most Easterly point on the Australian coast)

Looking north, Byron Bay at dusk

The lighthouse on the cape

Looking south towards the cape

Byron Bay

From the cape

Looking to Cape Byron from Lennox Head

This is the first time I have actually stopped at Byron Bay and had a look around, It's commonly known as a place with hippies and drugs, but It didn't seem like that at all, sure those types exist there but there's more of them in the city anyway.

I only stayed there for 2 nights but it was probably my favourite part of the trip, It's quite a small town, and it has a great aura about it. It was out of any holiday period which was a good thing, there were mainly surfers and English Backpackers hangin about, it's quite an alternative place.

I decided to drive up to the border of NSW and QLD as it was only about 60km (37 miles) further North, I ended up going past the border and made it as far as Surfers Paradise on the Gold Coast about 80km (50 miles) south of Brisbane.

I literally got out of the car, walked onto the beach, took this snap, then raced back to my car and headed back to the safety of NSW.

I should have just stopped at Coolangatta, which is the first town in QLD on the border, which I took this photo looking towards Surfers.

So that was about as much of QLD I saw on the trip, but I didn't even plan on going that far north.

My next stop was in a larger town called Coffs Harbour where I stayed another 2 nights, It wasn't as nice as Byron Bay but it was still very nice. The place is famous for growing Bananas and the home of that thug of an actor, you know the one who always puches people out and also plays in a real shitty band, Russel Cow or something.

This was across the road from the motel I stayed in

This is the jetty that extends into the harbour

One of the reasons I stayed at Coffs Harbour was cause it's close to a World Heritage Area, Dorrigo National Park, about an hours drive from Coffs.

I went on a bushwalk in the park and ran into some interesting creatures.

This is a Brush Turkey, which is fairly common, but you don't see them in Sydney

This is a Goanna which is a fairly large Lizard

This was a nice little waterfall, Cedar Falls, I was surprised that there was any water falling seeing as there has been little rain for quite a long time.

This was a nice view of the National Park from a lookout.

From Coffs Harbour I made the trip south to Newcastle stopping at a few places on the way.

The first place was Nambucca Heads, I just like the name of the place, it is a nice place too

Port Macquarie

Tuncurry, I stopped here for lunch with the pelicans, I know this place fairly well as I used to come here for holidays when I was a kid.

Newcastle, this was one of my favourite places to go when I lived in this town a few years back. This particualr beach is 3 beaches in 1, the north end is Bar Beach, the middle is Dixon Park Beach and the southern end is Merewether Beach, I used to love watching thunder storms from here.

I realised that I wasn't in any of my photos and couldn't prove I was actually there, and this still doesn't prove it but I took a couple of photos of myself when I was bored.

I didn't want to use the flash straight at my head so they are a bit dark

Me proving you don't necessarily get fat by eating a shitload of junk food

Well that's about the extent of my adventure, over 2000km (1240 miles) of driving in 6 days, I enjoyed myself and I couldn't have asked for better weather as you may have noticed from the photos, not 1 drop of rain the entire trip.

If you missed my last holiday (Winter in the Tropics) you can see it here,
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=14774.msg180282
as it slipped back off the board before anyone noticed, or cared (which will probably also happen here)

I have this funny feeling I have to back track and I have no idea how far in The Shadow of the Templars.

I'm in Spain in the Well and I think I need a torch to enter the black hole in the wall, it gave some message about: I wish I got the torch off that bad dude, maybe in Ireland or something. And the old dude that waters the garden says he doesn't have a torch.

I don't think I can go and catch a plane anywhere, Am I stuck or is there some work around? like as if I couldn't pick up the candle,

silly adventures that don't have logical multiple solutions.

sorry to post this here, but I figure people around here will know (if they understand where I am in the game)

Just yesterday I tried out this product as an alternative to having to have some dual boot type system.

It seems to be pretty good so far.

For anyone that doesn't know, it let's you run a "virtual" computer from your existing one, as the product name seems to describe.

I installed Win98se, on it, it's capable of running as many operating systems as you like if you have the space (or at least a few).

at the moment I'm Running XP Pro with Service pack 2 RC2, and I can ALT+TAB between XP and Win98se.

It seems to work alright and can run some games that have trouble in XP even with vdmsound, dosbox etc.

The only thing I noticed is it uses a fixed virtual soundcard and video card, which may not be too much of a problem, but can be a problem if you need a Nvidia Gforce or something.

anyway, for most Sierra games it comes in quite handy, and GF as I did end up having problems running that with VDMSound on XP.

Has anyone used this? I'm just using the 45day trial to test it out, I'm just wondering if it's worth the US$129. and If it can screw up your computer or anything (well of course it can as it's made by MS)

I just got back from my escape to Cairns in tropical north Queensland, just to give you some idea of the location, here's a map showing similar proximities. eg, just like hanging out in the Caribbean.

It was an awesome adventure, and fairly cheap too, as I got cheap airfair and free accommodation at my sisters (except when I went further north).

It was great to get out of Sydney's cold weather, at this time of year in Cairns, everyday is generally 26-28 C (78-82 F) and gets down to about 20 C (68 F) at night, and this is winter time.

Here's some photos from my trip, I don't have a camera, so I just used disposable one's, so they are just scans, but here's a taste anyway, they're all nature shots as I love the wilderness.

This is Cairns Harbour at dusk

This is Josephine Falls, just a little waterfall about 60km (37miles) south of Cairns

This is Emmagen Creek, which is the furthest point north on the east coast of Australia that you can go without a 4 wheel drive vehicle (there's still about 1100km (683miles further to go)

Now after walking 10km (6.2miles) on your own, running into this sign miles from anywhere can be a little freaky, especially when you have to get back that distance to get any help. (you still hope to see a croc though [but I didn't])

This is Emmagen Beach which was just past that last sign (this looks back to Cape Tribulation, where I stayed for a few nights a backpackers place in the rainforest on the beach)

This is Myall beach where I stayed at Cape Tribulation (located in the Daintree National Park [A World Heritage listed place 140km {87miles} north of Cairns]), the backpackers place was called PK's Jungle Village, which was literally in the jungle behind the beach. This beach reminds me of some adventure game, I can't remember the name but I think it had some island and there were monkeys.

There was another crocodile warning right here, this is Myall creek, had a nice setting.

I went on a river cruise up the Daintree River looking for crocodiles, we saw a few, and some snakes and birds, but the biggest one was only 2meters (6''6') there are apparently 5meter crocs in the river

Lake Barrine is a volcanic crater lake in the Atherton Tablelands south west of Cairns, surrounded by lush rainforest and reeds & mangroves, I did the 5km (3.1miles) walk around the lake

This is a curtain fig, it's friggin huge in the midle of the rainforest, really hard to get a good shot as you can only see it up close otherwise trees are in the way (this is looking up at it, it goes down much further [I also took a vertical shot but it's so dark in the rainforest that the photo was worse than this one])

Cairns Harbour at very low tide, there's heaps of wildlife in the mud flats, birds, crabs etc

This was on the way home thismorning at dawn looking at the northern beaches of Cairns during take off

This was disappointing as it's the only shot I got of the Great Barrier Reef, I had a trip out to the reef and did some snorkeling, it was fucking awesome, My Brother inlaw even brought his under water camera, got film and batteries, the problem was it was broken (we only found that out when we were out there)
During the flight home we passed over heaps of reefs but the problem was it was dawn so the sun was facing the window, this was about the best opportunity I got as we were banking towards Townsville (where I waved to Kandyman, but as usual he didn't wave back)

I was really happy about this part too on the way down decending into Sydney, we passed Broken Bay, which is the border between Sydney & the Central Coast of NSW, if you saw a picture I posted a few weeks back about work with a big headland, you might recognise the thin piece of land just under the wing of the plane.

I still had some film left when I got home, so I took a photo off the balcony at my house.

Well I hope I haven't bored anyone too much, but that's what I've been up to lately and I haven't even seen a computer for a week and a half, I didn't miss it at all.

I don't know the point in this post, except to show what I've been up to, but feel free to make any comments or post pics of natural places you've been to, or even straight out your front door.

Cheers

I'm just about to get a new 120GB HD and I want to install Win98 SE & XP so I can choose which one I want to boot at startup.

I remember about 5 years ago I had Win 98 & some version of Linux, and I sort of remember how I did it.

I'm not sure if this is the order I did this in,  and that's where I'll need some help and some suggestions of some programs to do it.

1) I had Win98 installed and I ran a program called "Partition Magic"

2) I then installed Linux on the new partition (not sure of the size)

3) I then ran a program called "Boot Magic" which gave me the option to choose between win98 & Linux

Now it's quite possible that you run the Boot Magic first, but I don't think so

Now I'm sure I've heard of some people doing something like this with win98 SE & XP, so I hope it can be done.

Now Also can you access files from the hard drive using either of the operating systems?

It gets me a bit confused, just for example, just say you install a program while in XP, and then you try to run it while in 98, files get stored in diferent places in both windows versions, therefore you could run into problems.

Are there any good programs out there to do this?

As I mentioned, "Partition Magic" & "Boot Magic" the versions I have are probably really outdated, I guess they still exist, I'll have to get out google, but are there any that people have used and can recommend some good programs (I have no idea if they are free or you have to buy them but any suggestions are fine)

I hope someone comes through for me, thanks for reading

General Discussion / Free DVD Decoder?
Sat 13/03/2004 09:07:06
I got a DVD RW drive the other day, and I just asumed you could play DVD's through WMP, but I found out you need a DVD Decoder for that to happen, I also noticed you can buy it through Microsoft.

What I want to know is, are there any good reliable FREE DVD Decoders out there, I've searched Google but I'm not sure what to trust.

Are there any Free media players that come with DVD Decoders?

I got Nero burning software with the DVD RW, but no decoder.

I'm sure they must be out there.

OK, I'm fascinated by statistics, so I've compiled some off various sites to see if it can spark any trivial sort of responses from the data gathered. Try to steer away from anything political.

Just to start off with some population data

World 6.4531903 billion

China 1.34 billion
India 1.09 billion
United States of America  294.54 million
Indonesia  221.78 million
Brazil  183.2 million
Pakistan  157 million
Russia  146.74 million
Japan  127.94 million
Germany 82.63 million
France 59.5 million
United Kingdom 59.16 million
Italy 56 million
South Africa 47.56 million
Spain 41.9 million
Poland 38 million
Argentina 37 million
Canada 32 million
Australia 20.23 million
Netherlands 16.36 million
Greece 11.2 million
Portugal 10.4 million
Belgium 10.37 million
Sweden 9 million
Bulgaria 7.9 million
Switzerland 7.43 million
Israel 6.7 million
Denmark 5.41 million
Finland 5.22 million
Norway 4.58 million
Ireland 4.02 million
New Zealand 3.81 million

This population data was gathered from http://www.world-gazetteer.com/home.htm which is fairly up to date (2004)

Largest countries by size

Russia 17,075,400 sq km, (6,592,846 sq miles)
Canada 9,330,970 sq km, (3,602,707 sq miles)
China 9,326,410 sq km, (3,600,947 sq miles)
United States 9.166,600 sq km, (3,539,242 sq miles)
Brazil 8,456,510 sq km, (3,265,075 sq miles)
Australia 7,617,930 sq km, (2,941,283 sq miles)
India 2,973,190 sq km, (1,147,949 sq miles)
Argentina 2,736,690 sq km, (1,056,636 sq miles)
Kazakhstan 2,717,300 sq km, (1,049,150 sq miles)
Sudan 2,376,000 sq km, (917,374 sq miles)

Most people think that Australia is just some little country down under somewhere, population wise they are right, but as far as size goes you'd be surprised.

here are some comparisons that I found:

Australia trying to fit in Asia, well it could fit quite easily.

Europe and Australia are fairly similar in size

The main 48 states of the USA is fairly similar aswell

The USA would actually fit into Africa over 3 times (the pic is not really to scale) and the Asian continent is larger than Africa

This picture is a good indicator of where mass populations of people live, although I think the richer countries have more electricity

for a larger version: http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/wrldnightlightslrg.jpg

Notice that most of the population of Australia live in 3 cities on the lower half of the east coast, most of the continent is desert or deserted. (and also a lot is owned by Aboriginal people, how nice of us to give them this land for free) [sarcasm]

The population of the city of Sydney is 4.3 million which is slightly more than L.A. 3.9 million which would make it the second largest city in the USA behind New York City 8.13 million [note this doesn't include surrounding areas]

There are different ways used to calculate the largest cities in the world, eg. adding the populations of cities with other surrounding areas and cities.

EG. I found that sometimes Seoul Korea was the largest city (I think by not including surrounding area)

Sometimes Tokyo Japan was (I think that included surrounding areas) and in that same way New York was 2nd with about 30 million [this includes the New York-Philadelphia area]

Also Mumbai (Bombay), India, was listed as the most populated city (I think this was the most up to date site, In this list Karâchi, Pakistan came in 4th, Tokyo 16th, New York 17th, London 20th, Beijing 24th, Toronto 30th & Sydney 36th

Hong Kong is the most densely populated city in the world.

Stats can be silly things sometimes cause you can just work out a way to get the stats you want. You can also get the world record for any obscure thing you can think of that noone else would even think about, eg. a lot of the things in the Guinness Book of Records.

I'm probably just boring everyone, your lucky I'm not talking about Cricket, in which Australia just won a best of 3 finals series against India 2-0. Last night they beat them by 208 runs which is one of the largest wins in history and probably against the 2nd best team (it was sad really cause most of the other games were really close) that's One Day cricket, the 4 test 5day match series was tied 1 all.

I was updating my links so I've compiled this list for easy links to get games and find out about developments. Not all the links lead to games, but I tried to include most people.

If your site is not there:
a: you don't have a site
b: you never link to your site
c: you're fairly new and I haven't noticed it yet
d: your site sux
e: I don't like you
f: I don't know you
g: your site had fuck all in it
h: your site expired
i: It was in a strange language and wasn't sure if it was relevant
j: I just plain missed it
k: you have too many sites so I just added 1

If it's not there, or the link is wrong or outdated just add it to this thread.

This is a strange thing, sometimes after I exit a game after using ctrl-T to test it, the AGS editor dissappears from the screen & task bar. First of all I wasn't sure if I'd just run it from the EXE file and never had the editor running at all, but I found out after loading AGS up again and then exiting it, the original AGS came back on screen.

It has happened more than once but not every time. It also came back when I closed other windows that were open.

Very strange, If it happens again I'll press ctrl-alt-del to see if it says it's still running (it probably will)

I've recently upgraded from win98 to XP and I've noticed one strange thing that happens which I'm not sure if it's a bug or not.

note: It's my project, not some random game.

When I skip a particular cutscene by pressing escape (that's what it's set to do), it exits out of the game back to windows without displaying an error message. If I let the scene run through it works fine.

This only occurs in XP as I copied the same files to my other computer with 98 and tested it and it works fine. (although I have no idea about ME or 2000)

I have many cutscenes that I can skip by pressing escape, but for some reason it's only 1 particular one that this happens.

It did happen at 1 other point but I can't get that one to happen now, and I tried starting the game again a few times to get up to the spot where it regularly happens (every time) and it still just exits the game without any message.

I'm running it with a P4 2.6GHtz with 512MB memory. in game when I press ctrl-v it says it's 2.60.693

I don't know if anyone else has had any problems like this with XP,
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Edit: I just tried running the game through the editor with ctrl-t and after the game exited it gave this message:

---------------------------
AGS Editor Error
---------------------------
There was a problem running the game engine. It may have crashed, in which case a message should already have informed you. Otherwise, make sure ACWIN.EXE is in the editor directory.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I didn't get a message that informed me before that one and ACWIN.EXE is in the editor directory, so I'm not sure what the problem is.

Happy new year Everyone,

What did everyone do for New Years? (or have planned)
I had a quiet one with my sister and a few friends, not many drinks, a bit of music, fairly layed back compared to the average new year, and I'm actually home at 1:40am.

Hope it's a good year for everyone, that last one went so fast.

Just a trivial point, you know how each year of your life seems to go faster, I've had a theory for a while about that, as you get older 1 year is a smaller percentage of your life, eg. when you're 5, 1 year is a fifth of your whole life, if you reach 80, it's one 80th of your life, therefore it seems like less time even though each year is pretty much the same length.

Enjoy your celebrations!!

I've had a great night on the piss, I just got home from the pub at 10 to 2 am on christmas morning, I caught up with people I hadn't seen for ages, and now it's time to go to bed, and wait for santa.

damnit, when I was about 7 I prentended to be asleep to see if santa was real, and caught my mum delivering my presents, I never thought santa was real, and I proved myself right that night.

I wish I wasn't so inquisitive, anyweay, happy christmas everyone, and I hope the Kebab went down ok.

Have a great day

Edit: I'm too drunk to post, Is this real, Happy xms anyway, I love this community.

Just thought I'd start this cause it's near the end of the Competition,

There are 3 teams left, Australia, England & France.

Australia knocked out New Zealand tonight and it surprised the shit out of me, I really thought New Zealand would smash any team it played (even in the Final)

England and France play for the second spot in the Final Tomorrow night, which is probably Sunday morning in UK.

So Australia will play either France or England in the Final

I think Australia has a good chance seeing as it is at home, but anyone could win.

They should have just skipped all the games and Just had a comp between Aus, Eng, Fra, NZ, Sth Africa, maybe also Ireland, Wales & Scotland, cause no one else plays the game. It's not even played as much as other football codes in Australia.

As far as the Australian Public is concerned, They want England in the final, We love beating England at all the sports they invented, but the truth is they may even beat us for once.

Does anyone even know this is going on at the moment? The USA and Canada even had teams, they also both won 1 game each, USA beat Japan, and Canada beat Tonga (population = 1 rugby team)

I guess most people in the UK would be aware it is on, but I guess most people visiting this forum don't give a shit.

I've just set up an unhandled event function and I'm not sure if this is a bug, (I can see why it might happen) but when using an inventory item on another,

If the item being clicked on with another item, already has a function, other items clicked on it (that are unhandled) aren't considered unhandled events.

Eg. (a piece of wood is the inventory being interacted with) Use a knife on the piece of wood to cut it, and I add the necessary action to cut it.

Now if I've used an unhandled event function, every time I use anything else on it, I have to add a separate interaction with that item, If I don't there is no message.

It just seems odd that an item I haven't associated an action with isn't considered unhandled.

I guess it's just when you associate one action with an inventory item, every other action with any other item on it, has to now be handled. (i guess it uses the same variable for each object)

Is this the case or is there another way, or has no one thought about it?
