Hey AGS community!

I used to visit this place every day... but then I switched to Unity and got very busy making games and... you know. Life! But I thought I'd pop in to show you what I've been up to. My upcoming game Burnhouse Lane just received a Steam Store page and since I'm doing my own publishing these days (screen7 decided to focus on ther own projects) the plan is to promote the shit out of it ;) And I'm very proud of this one! It would mean a lot if you guys could take a look and maybe hit that wishlist button if you like what you're seeing. Those of you who remember The Cat Lady and Downfall should feel right at home with Burnhouse Lane.

Hope your're all well and still making awesome adventure games!

Guys, please let me know if it's OK to use cut-up royalty free video in a scene in a game where you can basically watch TV and switch between channels (like in Heavy Rain when the kid is watching cartoons).

I've been thinking about using this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_f2Enn8x5s&list=PLQHC0V7PP5uCxyTt5tlhM4pskJchzuZwN&index=3

Obviously, I'd just loop 2 minutes of it, or so.

Will I get sued?

Hey guys ;)

Been a while since I posted here - moved to Unity (+ Adventure Creator) over a year ago... But still popping in to see what's new in AGS every now and then ;)

I wanted to ask your opinions regarding a puzzle for the new game I'm making - Lorelai. Would it make sense, (or rather is it possible) to ignite a fuse/wick on a home-made bomb not with lighter or matches, but by striking a rock on another rock/metal object to create sparks? What do you think? Is this totally unrealistic? Could that be done in real life?

I'd appreciate some feedback ;)

Please help!

I've been experimenting with the joystick plugin: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=41658.0. I've added it to my game and now I keep getting this error:

Failed to save room room6.crm; details below
__Plugin100.ash(51): Error (line 51): 'IsButtonDown' is already defined

The problem is, I don't have IsButtonPressed defined anywhere! What's _Plugin100 anyway? I can't find it. I've actually deleted all scripts and rooms hoping it was hidden in there somewhere and this error still shows up...

Any ideas, folks?...

AGS Games in Production / DOWNFALL (2015)
Thu 06/11/2014 11:38:55

DOWNFALL

There is nothing Joe wouldn't do for his wife.

But as they try to save their marriage with a romantic getaway, things go from bad to worse, and from worse... to insanity.

In this tale of love, madness and murder  Joe will prove what kind of man he is.

But what kind of man is he exactly? A loving husband? A cold realist? A bitter skeptic? An asshole?

That is something YOU will decide, as you join him on his journey for redemption.

"It's a remake of my first commercial game from 2009 made in a style of The Cat Lady. I've kept the core concept of the original and turned it into a very different beast. The game's hotel Quiet Haven has remained mostly unchanged in its layout and some backgrounds are reminiscent of the old Downfall's, but some also have been completely changed to fit the new style of the game.

I'm also working closely with AGS forum member Yeppoh who's in charge of character art and animation. He is AMAZING and I love what he's produced so far!

TEAM:

WRITING, CODING, BACKGROUND & ADDITIONAL ART: GRIM
ANIMATION: YEPPOH
MUSIC: MICAMIC (+guests)
HOTEL PAINTINGS ART: DYSPHORIA WEAVER
PRODUCTION/PUBLISHING: MODS/SCREEN7

And I will add out voice acting stars as we go. So far we've got:
JOE DAVIS: JESSE GUNN
IVY DAVIS : ISA AND

Here's the thing- I'd like to make a remake of my first commercial game, Downfall.

But I'm making another game at the same time and frankly, it's a lot of work to do it all on my own.

I would like to employ services of an animator to make all character sprites for the game, money involved. How much and on what conditions, I'm open to discuss it in private once/if the right person comes forward. Style? - something similar to The Cat Lady, but not necessarily. I'm open to different (but realistic) styles. Sprites would have to be quite large (200:400)as it would be what we here on the forums consider high-res ;) (800:600) All characters would also be black&white only.

Bear in mind this would be an awesome fully voiced Steam/GOG/whatever production that a lot of people are waiting for!:)

I've had some people contact me from outside the forums but to be honest I haven't really seen anything that would impress me yet.

It would be great to work on this with one of AGSers tbh. I hope the right person is out there, waiting, so... please PM!!!;)

I have a simple question (I apologize if it doesn't qualify for a new topic, but I really need to know this):

Do alpha sprites in GUI cause more slowdown than if they were used as a room object?

I'm thinking of using GUI for a noise filter for the game, but not sure if this is a good idea, due to performance issues.

I've also upgraded TCL interface slightly, so now text labels are displayed on a alpha sprite with transparency. If GUI is not visible most of the time, does it affect performance too (as if it was constantly taking up  memory)?

My ambition is to get the game on steam, which I think I'll be able to pull off, I've worked in the game industry for some time now and my gut feeling is that I know some guy who knows some guy. I may be overconfident though and the game might very well get stuck in greenlight hell and then primarily distributed through other channels.

I'd hate to think that this is how it's done... I really love how Kathy Rain is shaping up and it's actually one of my most anticipated AGS games at the moment... but having been through Greenlight Hell myself I'd find it terribly unfair that knowing a guy-who-knows-a-guy is the way to do it...

So... If one wanted to apply for a job in gaming industry, what are the companies he would try to get an interview with? Apart from the obvious ones, like Daedalic or Double Fine, which doors would you guys knock on? I've tried googling it up but all I found was dust and a load of nothing:(  Can we maybe compile some kind of list of places together?

Recruitment / Let's make a game in one year!
Sun 06/01/2013 04:26:55
Hey;)

I guess I've established myself enough in our little community to prove to you all that I can finish what I've started and make a fine game. But it just takes too long to work on a project alone... So, lately I've been thinking about getting a team together to speed up the process. It's stupid to spend 3 years working on one thing. I want to make a game in one year. I'm sure it can be done...

The problem is this: all these years doing my own stuff I don't know if I can actualy work well with other people. No matter how good they are, what they produce will always be different than what I've planned/imagined it to be... And even worse- I've accepted that people have tendency to let you down and while at first they feed you wonderful promises and reassure that what they're supposed to do will be done in a day or two, they end up not doing it at all or losing interest. That's why there is so much vapor-ware around these forums and fair enough- it's extremely difficult to focus on one thing for such a long time and not get bored of it. And that's exactly the kind of person I'm not looking for;)

Who I'm looking for then?

Well, I'm not sure exactly... Animators? Character artists? Programmers? These are the areas that I consider my weakest and having on board some individual with strong skills would save me a lot of time and help me make a better game.

I'll put it like this: if you think you have this *special something* and can make a game with me in one year, get in touch and show what you've got, and you might become a part of Harvester Games, make some money on it, and develop an awesome game;)

Completed Game Announcements / The Cat Lady
Sat 01/12/2012 09:33:54

Susan Ashworth, known in her neighbourhood as the crazy Cat Lady, is a lonely 40-year old on the verge of suicide. She has no family, no friends and no hope for a better future.

One day she discovers that five strangers will come along and change everything... But those five, "The Parasites", are also the most ruthless, deranged and cold-blooded bunch of psychopats the city has ever known. They will stop at nothing to hurt Susan. Unless, she hurts them first...

Susan's few weeks journey doesn't take her across the world and won't turn her into a hero. She has little faith in others and hardly even cares about herself. She can't fight and has never fired a gun in her life.

But she's hanging onto that thin thread of hope, that in the end, as promised, there's an ilusive reward waiting for her. Something worth trying for. Something that'll help her find an unlikely friend. Something that'll give her life a purpose...

Susan's journey takes her on a rollercoaster ride between the world of the living and the world of the dead, where the only way to survive is to overcome her biggest weakness: her own self.

"A horror story that should be enjoyed for years to come" - Link Dead Gaming

The game contains themes of violence and gore, strong language and nudity and is suitable only for persons of 18 years and over.

Reviews & player bloggings:

"Despite the surreal nature of the game, the realism of the dialogue is spot on. The developer absolutely nails emotional trauma, whether its a character discussing her partners reaction to a cancer diagnosis or the painful ways in which we dig at and hurt each other when we argue with the ones we love. 4.5/5"

"Its so good that it single-handedly breathes new life into the adventure game genre and shows that mature storytelling with an artistic presentation is not dead. 10/10"

"Susan Ashworth is no heroine, she is a flawed and damaged human being, with a past so devastating it will bring you to the verge of tears."

"Altogether, this muddy patchwork of horrific imagery, terrifyingly real emotion and superb sound design comes together to create a horror story that should be enjoyed for years to come."

"If you are looking for a shallow, quick play this game is not for you. However if you are looking for a lasting experience that will most likely keep you thinking long after you have finished the game, then youve spent your money wisely and will not be disappointed."

"Susan Ashworth may be one of the most human characters Ive encountered in a game."

Played through the entire part 1 on PS3 today and personaly I really loved it!!! Never cared much about other Telltale games, but this one I think was excellent. They are definitely heading in the right direction. I can't wait for another chapter! :) I wonder what you guys think. Anyone had a chance to play yet?

My free trial nears end...I'm on the line, unsure whether I should keep it and pay £5.99 a month or not. I'm using it on my PS3 and it works very well. My only problem is with the lack of films. While there's definitely a wide sprectrum ( including anime and foreign films, etc) there  just isn't that many of them all. Also, I find that if you can access any film within few seconds for free you just want to watch them all and end up watching nothing... What would you suggest guys?

I think I'm going crazy....... Every fonts I try are worse than the other.... the final result being a blurry mess of a text.... I know this has been probably done 100 times before, but please, can someone send me a default AGS font with black outilne for 640:480 resolution? I would be very very grateful.

EDIT: Never mind. I was going crazy... but I'm healed now. Please ignore this post.

Hey, I'm using the latest version of AGS 3.2.1 and I think I encountered a nasty bug when using copy/paste loop option....

Seemingly, the loop gets copied and frames show sprites like they should on the screen. But when I go into preview mode, loop 2 contains no frames... Nothing at all. You can see here:

Game crashes too, with an error of: loop 2 does not contain any frames.

Any idea what's going on with copy/paste? It seemed like such a cool option but is clearly broken... or maybe I'm just doing something really stupid... Please help.

Hi,

I've done my research befre posting but I still can't find the answer...

As my game grows bigger and bigger I've gone back to large un-cropped sptites I used in the beginning and saved them as much smaller cropped png files instead of bmp. I thought it would make a significant difference, since the old file size of 1.3 mb on average for one spite has now come down to 15-20 kb.... But after replacing sprites in the editor the size of the game stays exactly the same.

  Having read the other posts I made sure I had "compress the sprite file" option enabled ( it was from the start anyway), added one new sprite, rebuilt game files several times, compiled, tried to split resource files into X mb chunks.... and no change. I thought that even if sprite format wouldn't make any difference, at least cropping the sprite from 800x600 to 200x600 would make the game smaller. But no. It doesn't.

What am I doing wrong?

Hi,
I'm done trying to solve this on my own... That's 2 sleepless nights now...I need help, guys.

I'm trying to make a sky sprite move sideways, right to left. The idea was to have two screen-sized objects- one starting its loop at x=0, and one just before, at x=800. When the first one reaches x== -800, it's supposed to move directly to x == 800 and then continue moving left. And the same with sky object 2. Of course, the sprite is designed the way that it seamlessly blends into another one. But I end up with this empty gap between them after just the first loop....

Here's the sprite I'm using:

I started off with this code (oS1 = sky sprite 1m oS2 = sprite 2)  :

function room_AfterFadeIn()
{

oS1.Move(-800, 536, 3, eNoBlock, eAnywhere);
oS2.Move(-800, 536, 3, eNoBlock, eAnywhere);

}

function room_RepExec()
{

    if (oS1.X == -800){

oS1.X=800;
oS1.Move(-800, 536, 3, eNoBlock, eAnywhere);
    }

if (oS2.X == -800){

  oS2.X=800;
    oS2.Move(-800, 536, 3, eNoBlock, eAnywhere);
 }

}

Please, have you any idea what I'm doing wrong? Is moving objects directly to the other side of the screen causing some sort of delay that creates the gap? But if so, the gap should be growing with each loop, and it isn't.... Perhaps you've got a better idea how to do it?

This months MAGS entry, and my first ever game....
A month ago I found the original version on a dusty CD tucked away in the darkest drawer.... and I thought I'd try to make it into something half-decent. It's possible that I failed.... :P But anyway, it will always be a special game for me. Made at that strange time of my life when changes were coming, it was my way of saying goodbye to the life I was leaving behind.

Even though I spent nearly a month trying to make it prettier, repainting all the shitty graphics and translating it to English I am fully aware it might be quite embarassing at times. But maybe for those of you who played Downfall maybe it will be interesting to see how it was born from this strange medley of ideas?

Hi:)

Is there any way that can be achieved? I'd like to use all-black character as a shadow on the wall following the main character, like in a mirror. The light level makes character darker but but only to a certain degree.... Any ideas?...

Hey, I know it's got nothing to do with AGS... but I just wanted to share with my favourite community that my partner's water just broke and we'll be heading to the hospital any minute now...:) I am obviously very excited:) I know I shouldn't be posting now, but I'm waiting for the midwife to arrive anyway.. and just needed to tell someone. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

This is what he looked like few months ago:

I will post another (screen)shot when he's out. Hopefully later tonight:)

Oh, the plan is to call him Gabriel, as in Gabriel Knight:) I hope his mother doesn't change her mind! I tried Guybrush...but she just wouldn't have it:)
