Please, I'm not a moderator but I think you should read the forum rules before you start drowning us with requests and half-baked ideas. How did you ever pass the initiation test?

The five people on the track might be approaching me to warn me about a train coming up behind me. So I'd pull the lever to avoid a head on collision of the two trains, jump out of the way, the first train would kill the man picking flowers, and the second train would kill the five people wandering on the track, who start to walk back up the track because they realise I've jumped out of the way just in time.

Either way everybody dies.

Nice, that's a start. I might think about dropping the suffix though, otherwise you might be in the Royal Courts of Justice charged with two counts of blatant copyright infringement. That sounds good though, if you go off and plan out how you could turn it into a game then there's a good chance it could turn into a blockbuster.

It's different, I wouldn't say it's abysmal. No... not abysmal...

First of all you need to think what you want before you start, and plan your game to the last detail, especially if it's a RPG. Think about the overall theme of the game first. Is it fantasy, historic, or modern?

If you don't plan then it won't turn out better than if you didn't plan. Like I said, it should be a long time before you even think about touching a computer.

There's a useful thread here: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=6297.0 that can give you all the details. You need to find a site to host your images, too.

Fireball, that's a really good background you've done. I especially like the transparency.

Are you trying to think of genres or ideas?

If you wanted to create a new RPG (which I guess that's what you're after from the title (you might have some issues with Jagex and their product Runescape)), then I'd steer away from the MMORPGs.

(a) It's impossible (don't quote me) to make them with AGS.
(b) Successful MMORPGs take years to plan, and it's a long time before the creators even think about touching a keyboard or mouse.
(c) A huge team is needed for the development and upkeep.

Also, compared to the fantasy RPGs there aren't many contemporary ones about. It would be great if you could break the mould and create something modern, like GTA but without the violence. :) But that means changing the title of your game, so...

How many points do I get for that?

EDIT: The Ghost above beat me to it.

A midget called Jorgen with one eye who hangs around in the alleyways behind hotels whose names begin with U on Tuesdays when Venus is in the twelfth house at midnight with a crew cut holding a hand grenade between his teeth while whistling Never Gonna Give You Up slightly off-key.
Actually, this is an inventory item in a game I played a while ago. Can't for the life of me remember what it was called though.

My contribution: A pair of silk jodphurs.

Great, that's awesome GuyAwesome! :) I've found a way to do it, using part of your code and part of mine. I don't think I thanked you the last time you gave help, so I'll do that now.

Thanks!

Well said Stupot.

Cool, I like the warped graphics. This looks very professional, too. Good luck. :)

Hullo.

The list box is a fairly integral part of my project. But I've come up with a problem. When there's too many words in a list box, it doesn't fill down the box create a block of writing, but instead it just carries on over the rest of the screen. I cannot possibly make my box any wider, and I must use a list box, too.

It is possible to get rid of this overspill and have the text carried on downwards and not across, like labels do? Thanks. :)

Here we go for a hurried breakdown of my votes:

Idea: Creed Malay
Atmoshpere: cuestaluis
Design: Creed Malay
Composition: cpage
Functionality: cuestaluis
Technique: cuestaluis

Many very different ideas this time.

Depending on the soil type, you could get Fantastic Mr Fox to dig a tunnel underneath the garden next door. You only need to be 15m over the fence, and if it collapses then who's going to miss 15m from the edge of their garden anyway? Plus if it's night time you could convert the gaping hole into a nice water feature so when the neighbours wake up in the morning they'll be too elated with their new pond to care.

It worked for me.

Wow, that's good! Unfortunately I wouldn't know where to start with this. I agree that looks much better though - I'll have a stab at replicating the shading on another character and show you how I got on in the original post. Thanks! :)

Cool, I was told my fff idea wasn't very good by somebody else (*cough*Cabbage*cough*), but I'm glad you at least appreciate the potential. :) I hope it goes well for you!

EDIT: Instead of double posting I'm going to put another one of my money-making schemes in here. The cousin site of foleyforfree.com could be www.poundapop.com, which hosts computer games which, as the title implies, sell for one pound each. Instead of making money from the sales themselves, Indie developers would give you a sum of money to add their game to the database in the hopes that they'll make some profit from it.

This would of course rely heavily on the advertising of the site, and there would also be many other problems too. But you could put it into your portfolio as filler. :)

What's the rule on apostrophes with "its"? Apart from the shortened form of it is, should they ever be used to show possession? One of the things that really annoys me is when I see shop signs with apostrophes in the wrong place. Do the makers not grammar check them?

General Discussion / FoleyForFree

I had an idea before reading this thread that might bring in some cash - but it's either a success or a flop. Set up a website, foleyforfree.com, offering a wide range of different sound effects free for download. Then they could be categorised, e.g: People, Machine, Nature, etc. Alternatively, you could download the whole database in one big chunk for a price of, say, £10. (Or limit sound effects available for free, and chuck in a whole bunch of others with the bundle?)

Anybody could contribute to the site, meaning it has an opportunity to grow, and also to raise awareness. The hopeful foley artists send in an example of their sound effects, and if they're up to scratch they get added to the database, and get rewarded with a free bundle/a small sum of money.

It might have been done before, and I might have completely missed the point of this thread, but that was my idea anyway. :)

Critics' Lounge / Paunch Characters' C&C

Hullo.

I've just started yet another little project, which I hope will keep me busy through the holidays. So far, I have the plot mapped out, the music sorted, and some graphics. (Below). Each of these little men have their own personality, which I hope I've captured. But what could I do to improve them? It's my first go at any kind of art really, so I'd like to know what's not right about them. Any little picky points are welcome!

Left to right: Paunch the Ogre; Sheriff of Sherwood; Soldier; Robin Hood; Friar Tuck; Dungeon Guard.

Progress: Added shading to Robin. Added shading to Dungeon Guard. Added shading to Paunch. Added shading to Friar Tuck. Added shading to the captain.

UPDATE:
The Sheriff, who only makes one appearance, has been made to look a lot older and more important. No doubt the poor serfs' extortionate taxes went on that golden armour... I've now completed the captain, who will also take on the same appearance as the soldiers. Therefore, the captain is effectively not needed. I'm not too happy about his helmet, and I might need to change the pattern of his armour - but I've added him in the line up nevertheless. So that just leaves one more, plus another four or five to complete! It negates the effect of boredom from staying home with swine flu at least =D. I've finished the Friar. He's supposed to be the old, wise brother of the Abbey, therefore I have left his muscles out. Paunch the Ogre has now been shaded. I'm very happy with the result - I've managed to flaunt his huge muscles, but at the same time I think I've retained some of his intended cuteness. His unsightly boils went well too. Having him a different size wasn't intentional however, but I reckon I could make it work. I'm calling the guard done, as he doesn't have a very big part/appearance in Paunch, and also because I'm happy with the way he looks. Over the next few days I'll redo the characters one by one, and start the final few. I'll keep this original post updated. I've taken off Paunch's club because I think it would make an ideal cursor.
