But you have to remember that those early Epic games were made to run on 386 PCs and were distributed on floppy disks. Nowadays we can use lots of channels and high quality samples..

Okay, so we didn't do that in Pleurghburg, but we could  have :P

Really, in terms of sound quality, Xm and Midi are about the same.. It's just that most tracker musicians limit themselves to very mechanical-sounding styles.. Don't ask me why. It's probably just tradition -- people emulating the styles of the early trackers who didn't have the power we have now..

Was the first Polymorph series 3? That was one of my favorites.

And I liked the female Holly. Maybe that's because the first series I saw was 3.. Though I don't think the male and famale are any different in terms of personality.

Is series 8 the one that started with the Kennedy episode? I always thought that was a different series than the prison one..

I definitely noticed a change in the later episodes.. It reminded me of American TV, maybe because of the style of humor, or the fact that Kochanski was added (in my opinion) simply because somebody wanted a female lead.. I'm not saying American TV is bad, but I don't think that style works in a show like Red Dwarf..

To animate an overlay, you can import all the frames into the sprite manager in the order you want them to appear, and then script the overlay to clear every few seconds and reappear using the next sprite..

You could put something like this in the repeatedly_execute script:

while (FRAME < 5) {
RemoveOverlay (ov_spr);
ov_spr = CreateGraphicOverlay(x, HEIGHT, FRAME + FIRST,1);
 if (FRAME < 5) FRAME ++;
 else FRAME = 0;
Wait(7);
}

FIRST should be the index number of the first frame. 5 should be changed to the number of frames..

Of course, I just put that together in a couple of minutes, so it probably won't work anyway  :P

I should eat helm alive so I can have his soul, and all his artistic talent along with it.

In other words, I like.

I just looked at the intro. Very Nice  :D

I love the animations, I love the music, I love how Death looks like Courtland Leksutin..

One suggestion: I think the falling animation at the beginning looks a bit awkward. I think if you animated the sprite it would look better..

I can't wait to play the finished game.

Are you resizing the background after drawing it? That's what it looks like, judging from the lines..
#708
Yeah, I see what you mean. Although one point of these competitions is to learn how to work with the limitations given..

I agree that the rules could be more straightforward though. A lot of musicians (including myself) are more spontaneous than methodical, and basically just spit out whatever they think of, whether it's correct or not :). I haven't taken the time to really study musical theory, since I believe it's geared more toward understanding what you hear rather than composing.. Maybe I'm wrong -- that's just my opinion..
#709
Trap: I don't think musical theory hurts creativity at all.. But I think I already ranted about that once. :P

Fuzz: I'm a bit confused too, at least about the first ruke. Can you give us more info on this Arnold Shlongbork fellow? ;)

If I had won, I wouldn't have had technical rules.   ;D

This post uses too many smilies   :-*

I curse a lot when I program.

The screenshots look really good. They do look a bit like Pleurghburg backgrounds, especially the first two, but they still have a unique style.

Some things you might want to change:

-The sky in the dock background needs a lot more detail. A cityscape in the distance would look good there.
-The wall texture on the building at the dock doesn't really fit in. I can't really think of anything to replace it with, though..
-On the front wall of Lilo's Lunch (outside), I don't understand what that sloped wallt to the left of the door is supposed to be. Is that another side of the building, or is the front wall just shaped like that? If it's a side wall, you wouldn't actually be able to see it, judging from the perspective that the lines in the parking lot suggest..

I like the graphics though. Good luck with your game..

Or Yahtzee.

Just my luck. I leave for two days and Greg fecking Hurst comes back while I'm gone ;)

I remember when I first saw your RPG demo. It's still one of the most complex things I've seen scripted in AGS, even after all this time.. I have not idea what to expect form you now :)
#714
Let's see..

Suspico
Pirate Fry 2
What Time Is It?
Rodekill 2
Evil Night
Ron: Time Out
Run Hot
FOY
Ignac 2
The Enchanted Lake
Revenants
Pleurghburg: Asylum
SOL II
Inferno
Roger Foodbelly
Dark Stalky's game (forgot what it was called :))
The Find

And I probably forgot some.. There's so much amazing stuff to look forward to, I'm afraid I might "cream my trousers" as they say..
#715
That's great :D..

If the rest of the game is this good, I won't mind waiting seven more years ;)
#716
Cool..

Er.. I mean..

COOOOOLL!!!

THIS IS ONE OF THE GAMES I'VE BEEN LOOKING FORWARD TO FOR A LONG TIME. I CAN'T WAIT TO PLAY IT.

(IS IT JUST ME, OR DOES ALL-CAPS LOOK WEIRD WHEN IT'S NOT FOLLOWED BY LOTS OF EXCLAMATION POINTS?)

General Discussion / Re:What are you like?

Well, I think I'm kind of similar to lex (except for the goat thing). I rarely start conversations, and I'm even a bit shy about joining in conversations with friends. I also observe more than I speak.. As a result, I know everything about everyone, but nobody knows anything about me.

And I like it that way.

(creepy laughter)

Is seriousity a real word?

Lucas Arts games definitely had a bigger budget. I don't think that really had any effect on the gameplay or storyline, but it did make the animation and voices better. Not necessarily the acting (Sierra had plenty of famous/has-been actors in their games), but more the production quality and consistency of the voices..

The thing I like most about Lucas Arts games is that the games are chalenging withour being frustrating. Even in games like FOA where I could die in a lot of places, I never felt like the game was unfair in any way. Sierra games have so many walking deads that I play them knowing I'll probably have to start over at some point because I forgot to pick up a grape thirty screens ago. And when I have to start over, the game really isn't fun anymore.

Yeah, some normalization, equalization, compression, etc would really improve the sound. Though this game already kicks ass enough as it is :)
