Uhh... I am doing this for the first time, so...

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION

Joe's Miserable Life

Possible Awards:

Best short game maybe, I'll let you decide about any other possibilities.

Summary of the game: It's a very short game about an old man, living alone in a poor house. A bad thing awaits him, the atmosphere is probably the most important thing in this game.

Are you using character sprite scalling in outside areas? If so then maybe try to set AdjustSpeedWithScaling to False in characters properties. Or next time use scrolling areas so it wont be "God he moves so slowwww" but "God this room is sooo big":).

Nn, I wanted to use that but the sprite turned out to be so ugly that I have rather created a special sprite for when Billy goes outside.

I've just finished the game and I enjoyed it, the voice acting in particular.
Just, uh, you could make the character move a bit faster. It takes him what seems like 2 years to move from one side of the screen to the other.

It's true that when outside, Billy moves like a f***ing snail, I might increase the speed by 1 to make it a little bit more bearable but still realistic.

...

Wow, thx for another deep analysis :) You'll definetly meet Joe at least once and it's gonna be completely different from the previous two parts (just like the second is different from the first one in its atmosphere).

That "music and sound thing" is very ironical, since I can't even differentiate an acord from a tune or interval. However, I link music to mood and colors, so maybe that't what helps me.

Thanks :) I might come with much darker games in the future, don't worry (laugh)

Can you provide a walkthrough? I am stuck:

Maybe i should go back to the corpse of the brother, to try to cut one hand, cause 'i wanted to help him' (laugh)

I swear if someone from this forum ever commits suicide it will be because of your games.

Well, can't deny that :-X

Congrats on the release. (nod)

And yes, it sucks when you release a game and get no feedback. :-\ This forum needs to embrace the gamers (or attract more of these rare species), as most ppl here are usually busy with making their own games that they end end up having little to no free time to play other's games.

I'll give your game a play as soon as I find some time, no doubt about it. (nod)

This is one of the reasons why I make mostly thirtyminuters instead of fulltimers. Btw it's strange, I am pretty sure that there is a much larger number of gamers than game creators out there, even the download numbers say so. Yet they probably don't even have accounts here on the forums, so they don't give us their feedback.

I played this last night. Graphically excellent; definitely sad and depressing.

Good job!

Thank you very much :)

Hi there folks, it's me again, the one with weird games :-X

I have quickly created a new short game called "Dark Times: Merry Christmas." It's a sad game about a small boy living in a wooden house with the rest of his family. It's Christmas night and his brother went outside to collect wood but didn't return yet. Find out what's going on!

I want to make "Dark Times" a regular (or irregular) series using mostly black and white (although deviations and special episodes might occur) economical graphics (The economical graphics is crucial because with it, I can gatling gun games - however, I still want them to have a strong atmosphere and/or original story/characters/whatever). The series will be dealing mostly with "dark" topics - but not all of them will be sad and depressive, some might be just creepy, crazy or simply twisted in a hardly descriptable way. If you people like it (or I get totally drowned into my inner universe), I might produce some full length games too.

WOW!!! You work fast!

I can't wait to try!

I love how Hell is so colourful compared to Joe's bleak home.

It would be done even sooner (November) but I had to do sh**load of stuff that slowed me down. The atmosphere is much different than in the first part.

Hello!

I have just finished a game called "Joe's Horrible Hell" and it is a direct sequel to "Joe's Miserable Life." It's my third game created in AGS and I start finding out that I really enjoy creating adventure games (I like to create games in general).

This time Joe goes to hell and he must find out why. I can't really tell you more. It should be a different kind of experience, compared to the previous part's bleak atmosphere. But it is still not supposed to be a fairy tale.

The graphics was created in paint.net and gimp, sounds are from freesound.org and music is from incompetech.com, voice acting is included too. I want to create one more part to make Joe's story into a trilogy!

Congratulations are in order!

"Joe's Miserable Life" is now Pick Of The Month and so will be gaining wider exposure and freaking more people out! (laugh)

I am very glad to hear that :)

Ad a brief review i wrote for this game, in this thread: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=48959.msg636576443#msg636576443

"Joe is not happy; and has reason to not be so. You could say his life lacks sauce. In reality, though, he has a few friends, including a spider and a speaking doll. He is resolved to find a way to help his friends, utilizing powers given to him by loved ones departed and thoroughly internalized".

:=

Thanks for recommending my game, and a nice review :) Still working on the second part, with smaller and bigger pauses tho.

Hi there!

I have recently finished a short adventure game called "Joe's Miserable Life." It's my second game created in AGS (my first game is completely in Czech, so I have no idea whether it has any point to post it).

The game is about an old sad man living alone in a small house, his whole life was pretty much a dull mess, his daughter died and his only friends are his dog and a toilet spider. This short game is about a life-changing misfortune.

The graphics was created in paint.net and gimp, sounds are from freesound.org and music is from incompetech.com, voice acting is included too. Although it was supposed to be a stand-alone game, I will most likely make it into a trilogy (I am slowly working on the second part now). I will be glad for any comments!
