Hi guys

I thought this might be of interest to you since this has to do with consoles and games from the 80s and 90s.

8-bit Memoirs is an eBook/discmag containing stories (memoirs) written by my better half. These stories are about the computers and consoles he experienced back in the 8-bit era, which includes the Phillips G7000, the Amstrad CPC and the Amiga. The stories describes how he experienced (some of) the games on those systems and he also shows his own creations with BASIC coding on the Amstrad CPC as well as his musical tunes.

I have been helping him out with the illustration part, so the final product contains about 15 illustrations from situations he remembers that were never photographed. There are also videos and screenshots from the different games his stories are about.

The stories are written from a young childs perspective, sometimes followed up by a comment from the now adult author.
While reading, you listen to a nice 5-hour long playlist of handpicked music that suits the stories well.

I think the whole project turned out pretty good so it's definetely worth a peek.

Watch teaser video here

It's free for download, but you can also buy a Blu-ray disc version if you wish.

General Discussion / Ukko's Journey released!
Wed 15/02/2017 09:06:25
Hi guys

I hope it's okay to post this here.

Back in 2009 LuBlu Entertainment (boyfriend and I) released Ukko's Journey as a cellphone game.
Now it's possible to play it on your Xbox One / PlayStation 3 / PlayStation 4.
It's released under this new label we call Blu-Play which stands for homebrew games for those three consoles.

Are you a developer, you might be interested in reading more about how you can develop your own homebrew games for the consoles - read more here

-- Youtube video demonstrating Ukko's Journey --

The game Ukko's Journey is a side scrolling game featuring colorful graphics, sound effects and catchy music. You can download the ISO file for free at www.blu-play.com
There's also a buy option if you want it as a physical disc.

If you play it, I'd love to hear what you think! :cheesy:

I don't think cartoony style would suit KQ5 or KQ6. More like Chains of Satinav style of graphics. That would be great.
Yeah KQ5 and KQ6 would not benefit from KQ7's cartoony look. Perhaps they would look prettier with more detailed graphics like Chains of Satinav buuuut then again the charm about the pixelled graphics in those two games would be lost. I think they're perfect as they are. That might of course be due to my own personal nostalgic feeling about them :-)

I actually tend to like the painting of backgrounds nowadays. I'll have a story, and I'll suddenly come up with something really cool by making a mistake while trying to paint a door hinge or something, and it turns into like a robotic spider that must be hacked, etc etc...

I have a more painterly art style though that is very interpretive in the Giger sense (objects are more subjective than object-ish). This may not work for you but I would suggest looking at mistakes as sometimes the greatest strokes of genius, if you know how to airbrush them right. :)
Hehe.. that sounds a little like what I did with my first game though. Since I created the backgrounds before coming up with a story. I did a lot of "Oh, I painted this really weird background that doesn't make a lot of sense. Now how can I fit that into my game" :-D

Still it's good to have room for letting the story evolve in a different direction than you originally intended if that makes it better. Balance is the key.

Also glad someone is actually looking at that blog
I hope you're not disappointed when I tell you that I've never known about your blog until you answered my post. Then I had a look. :-) - If you were posting frequently I would probably be a returning visitor. (But who am I to point fingers at others when I can't even keep my own website up to date).

Hope one of these parapgraphs answers your question.
I got a lot of answers and ideas from what you wrote. Not ideas to the story but ideas on how I could work more efficiently. :-) Thank you!

wow, my tip would be: don't read on internet message boards how to do it but do it. It is always helpful to have a rough draft or even better worked out scenes on a storyboard. yeah. But then if you are feeling it just do it and build everything you need around it. Spit it out, make it rough, then polish it. Or lock yourself in a room for 2 months and write down everything in every detail. Whatever works best for you.

Well I'm not looking for "a way to do it". I'm merely gathering inspiration from others. :-)

Hope this helps.

It does. Really useful advice. And nice with such detailed input.
I took a look at your blog and stumbled across something you wrote back in July, 2013:
"I should write it as if I'm writing a movie, then work around the obstacles to make puzzles." - How did that work out? That is similair to what I'm trying to do with my second game. I visualize the story and write it down chronologically. I don't know if it's a good way or a bad way of going about it.
It helped to kickstart the beginning and backstory of the game, but I'm still unsure of a lot of things. I do have a lot of locations and characters planned out but I have no clue about who my main character is going to be which feels kinda odd. Also it feels like I'm doing a lot more work than I need to since a lot of it is not going to be used but on the other hand it lets me explore the personality of the characters.

I'm curious to know how people organize their game project.
Do you write a story or do you just start and see how it goes. How carefully do you plan everything out before you start putting it all together?
Any do's and don'ts?

My first game was created kinda backwards. I started doing backgrounds and developed the story around them. I wonder how the professionels go about it and in what order they do things.

I dunno.. I think it kinda lost its charm :-/

Hello

I'm working on a new AGS project and I'm using the verb coin template to get familiar with its functions.
I've imported a few rooms and a character and made him move (all basic stuff).

It annoyed me a lot that I had to double click to make my character move, and found out it's because I'm using a wacom tablet.
With a mouse there's no problems (a single click is enough to move the character).

I'm always using a tablet, also when I play games and I have never before had this problem. I know it's a minor thing, but perhaps it could be fixed? :-)

LuBlu Entertainment presents Pirate Diamonds!!!

It took us 3 years to complete this game-project, despite it being a very simple and short game. (That's how long it takes when you have a daytime job + a kid to take care of at the same time too).
But now it's finally completed, and available for Android and JavaME enabled devices!!!

See Pirate Diamonds - a simple mobile arcade game to read about the game.
Download for Android at Google Play
Download for your JavaME enabled phone by visiting Pirate Diamonds - a simple mobile arcade game

Now go play and challenge all your friends to spread the game!

And also remember to rate it at Google Play. :-D

Thanks!

I like the colors of the design, and the semi transparent boxes. My only "issue" is that it's very "box in a box". It would help a lot if you'd let the stone background fill the entire background and get rid of the black background. It would open up the design so it doesn't feel so tight. Since your website is about your music and you aim for video games, perhaps you should consider adding some of your music to indiegamemusic.com as well? It's free, and helps getting your name out there. :-)

I can imagine it must have taken a long time cutting out the little pieces and putting it all together. But it looks really interesting and fresh.
Looking forward to playing this one :-)

Wow this looks really really good! I love the style of the characters and backgrounds.
Just noticed it has voice acting as well. Who did the voices if I may be so bold to ask? :-)

Top 10 Weird Rules of Video Games

1. Bad guys disappear when you kill them.

I know of at least one game where this isn't true. Have you ever played Nemesis the Warlock on C64? Here, the enemies just pile up instead and you use them to climb on to get to the next level ;D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fbnrTjHkAPQ&feature=related

Anyway, quite a funny list. There really is a lot of weird rules in games once you think about it.

I love your backgrounds! Have you ever considered to make a tutorial to demonstrate your technique? Or is it classified? :-X
