Hey,

I want to make a puzzle similiar to the one with the green triangle in openquest. Now I know the author of open quest has probably put alot of efford in making this puzzle and showing how to do it.... But I just don't understand how it works. All I can figure out it was the piece of code does... But not why it's written like that.

Could someone provide me a little more info?  :)

Thanks

Critics' Lounge / Critic my small portfolio
Fri 28/12/2007 15:59:57
hey guys,

For next school year I'm applying for Gamedesign in College. Therefore I made a small portfolio to show some of my best work.

http://www.coreylair.co.nr/

What do you think of the design? It's generated with Photoshop and then modified. But I think it has a good functionality for what I want to use it for.

Also does the background display like it should?  :)

Thanks in advance!

Critics' Lounge / Bedroom background
Fri 23/11/2007 16:06:14
Hey,

I've been messing with this style/technique I've been using for quite a while now. And I think I've finally hit on the right spot!  =)

I still, perhaps, need to do some cleaning up in some spots. But no drastic changes

This is done in 3d first and then modified to work for 2d.

Please tell me what you think of it. Advice and critics are welcome.

Thanks in advance  :)

Critics' Lounge / 3 drawings
Fri 05/10/2007 14:54:00
 hey,

Lately I've been using my spare time to practice some drawing. This is pretty much what I got so far. The first one is made with a pen because I couldn't find a pencil to draw with. I know the perspective is quite off in some places, but I'm ok with that.

Please tell me what you think of them  :)

hey,

I was wondering why so many programs require service pack 2 or later to be installed before they can be installed themselfs. I wouldn't really mind if service pack wasn't such a pain to work with.

I really want to dodge the fact that some programs ask for service pack. I know it's not really needed. And I'm not doing anything illigal by not installing it.

pff why does service pack want to make my lonely pc live so miserable  :( ::)

First off. I'm not totally sure if everything I'm going to ask here totally fits in this part of the forum but I guess it's the best place to post it.

Ok I'm at the beginning stages of developing a game but before I start I want to ask a few questions about how more experienced game designers work:

* How do you go around testing your own game? I assume that everyone does so, of course there are beta testers in many case but I think you always have to test yourself too. How do you do it? I mean if your game is quite long you can't go through it over and over again to test a puzzle pretty far in the end.

* How do you handle your rooms? Do you complete every room and then go to the next or do you make all rooms and then start coding and such.

* What do you use for the start menu? Do you use a gui or a background? And what do you do with the buttons like "start new game"?

* How do you fit in your objects?

* Where do you gather your background info and needed facts?

hmmm I think that's about all I want to know so far.

I hope I get some usefull awnsers.

Thanks for the help in advance!  :)

Critics' Lounge / Cellar BG (from sketch)
Sat 30/06/2007 13:07:49
Howdy!

When it was still good weather I've made some sketches in the sun. This is one of them:

It suppose to be a cellar in a spooky house. I'll be adding detail later, I just want to know if I'm on the right track with this. I think there might be some issues with perspective.

I'm also unsure how to edit this with photoshop and turn it in a good looking BG.

Thanks in advance  :)

General Discussion / AVI to DVD?
Mon 07/05/2007 12:38:28
Hey!

I have some AVI files that I would like to put on DVD and play them on my x-box. I've downloaded some free software but when I convert>burn on DVD>and put it my x-box, it won't play properly. All my x-box does is make weird noises. I was wondering if anyone could recommend me some software to do this. I really want it all on DVD. The fact that it doesn't work could also be caused by the re-writeable DVD's I use. Maybe there's a way around that? I would rather not get my x-box illigally fixed for that though.

Any help is appreatiated!

thanks in advance  :)

Critics' Lounge / Poem - I used to love you
Tue 10/04/2007 17:26:23
I wrote this poem today. Since I rarely write any I just though I could post it here so everyone can tell me what they think of it. Ok here it is:

-------------------------------------------

I used to love you

But things got way out of hand.
Now I have these feelings,
problems I can't stand.

I used to love of you

But now the nightmare has begun,
It faints like water
under the burning sun.
I think I can't handle it.
It's just no fun.

I feel like I've been drinking,
and you were the alcohol.
Now I have the hang-over
and feel terrible.

I used to love you

Now I just feel a pain.
I kinda wonder,
if you feel the same.
Do you really care,
or is it just a game.

I used to love you

You started as a friend
but things started to change.
Now in the farest end.
You became a monster,
a figure I can't stand.

I used to love you

But I don't quite understand.
If everthing was meant
and god had it all planned.
Then why this love had to end?

I used to love you

But I guess I have to say goodbye.
I'll never understand why,
but I'll have to try.

Even if all this makes my cry.
I could always think of you,
Because thoughts never lie.

hey,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this so don't hesitate to move it if needed!

Ok well, I want to use this custom icon for my game. In a pc magazine I found a program to can convert images to ICO files. So far so good but I have another problem. I can't manage to get the icon the right colordepth without getting a absolutely hiddious one. I've downloaded the program mentioned in the manual but it reduces the colors in an very ughly way. I tried to reduce the colors with photoshop first and then convert it but this didn't work either.

Some help is appretiated  :) Thanks in advance

hey,

When I was bored I drew this male character. I thought I might use it in the MAGS competition but I have too little time. But the guy is still hanging on my harddisk so I thought I could post it here for some critics. He doesn't really needs to be something, I just drew out of nothing and this came out.

I'm quite happy with him. If I think about the first character I posted then this is quite an improvement. And I did it all myself to get this result.

What do you guys think?  :)

hi there,

I've applied for Game design at my school for next year. To see if I'm right for it I now I have to do 3 assignments. One of them is drawing a character. So I grabt a piece of paper and a pencil and started drawing. I've never skeched a character before. He's suppose to be a bit rebelish and he's stuck in a city where un human creatures rule.

Do I need to change anything before I'm gonna take a shot a coloring him in photoshop?

thanks in advance!  :)

General Discussion / Tom Wilkinson!
Thu 22/02/2007 19:23:49
hey,

I know there are more serious things to discuss here but I would like to say that I'm crazy about Tom Wilkinson!! He's such a great actor!! For the ones that don't know him: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0929489/. Some of you might know him as Gerald in the Full Monty. But I hate it as people think "oh it's that guy from the full monty" while he did so much great stuff.

He's such a lovely man! Would like to meet him some day. Such a nice smile and adorable look!! Did I already say how good he is as an actor? He's always so believable and you can alway see the emotion on his face. God I love him!  :P

Anyone else who likes him?

hey,

I've been creating textures for various games lately. It all goes pretty well but the problems come when I lay my textures in a sqaure of four. They don't tile. Lots of people on msn say I need to use the offset function in photoshop. But I don't have PS on this pc and I don't like to use it anyway. I prefere to use to Paintshop pro. So I was wondering if there is an offset function in PSP also. I use paintshop pro 7 btw, if that matters.

thnx in advance!

Critics' Lounge / A level in UT
Sun 05/11/2006 10:43:13
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. Since this is an adventure game community and an UT one. But still , I feel I'm getting the best and serious critics here.

http://www.filefactory.com/file/c4889f/

It's a part of a bigger project. And it's also a rather weird game type called Bunnytrack. Bunnytrack is like Capture the flag only you have to go through a course of obstacles to reach to flags. In my part of the map there are no flags because it's not the ending of the map. I'm pretty sure this will be confusing for you but please try to make the best of it.

thnx in advance
