Since I announced the game at Adventure-X I guess I should announce it here too!  :-D

Captain Disaster in: There's a Hole in my Galaxy is another comedy science fiction game starring the hapless captain.  Once more he's put the universe at risk, and again it's up to him to save it.

Imagine, if you will, the love child of Star Trek TNG, Red Dwarf and a strange, surprised looking creature from Alpha Centuri.  Mix it in with a little gameplay that's mostly adventure but with just a hint of space RPG, gulp it down with lots of pizza and cheap bear, and you have some idea what this game is eventually going to be like.  An epically stupid and possibly stupidly epic game set across 3 time zones.

Recruitment / [HELP FOUND] Voice Actress
Thu 27/12/2012 10:09:20
I'm looking for quite a specific voice actress - someone who can do a generic English accent and also a passable Brummie accent!

It's for a character in Death Has A Million Stomping Boots and will be approx 30 lines for a character who's a sort of female alien version of Stan from the Monkey Island games.  The reason I want someone who can do a Brummie accent is that once the client is scanned, an attempt to use their own local dialect is used (Brummie causes the Universal Translator some difficulties as you  might expect!).

I can't promise payment but you would certainly get a free copy of the game when it's released and (if you want) access to early beta versions during the game's development.

If you're interested please PM me.

I was wondering if anyone knew of a source of information regarding the number of locations and characters in adventure games?  I've tried to find something but been unable to.  I'm interested in for instance how many locations some of the great Golden Age adventure games such as Zak McKraken, The Dig and SoMI had.  Also newer games - and how this related to the games' estimated playing time.

If anyone knows if such a source I'd be grateful if you could post the link; on the other hand, if you've made an adventure game (commercial of Freeware, I don't mind), or been obsessive enough to actually play through a game keeping a record of the number of locations / characters, I'd be interested.  (Partly I want to use this to estimate the overall playing time of the games I'm working on, but I'm kind of just interested in a general sense as well!)

Just a suggestion...

Kidnap Dave Gil and don't release him until he's signed a binding contract to create and release Purity of the Surf 2 in 2013.

Who's with me?  8-)

AGS Games in Production / Troll Song
Wed 05/09/2012 23:40:14
Firstly, I have to say that this is nothing to do with Pixel Hunt's song!

Secondly... this is going to take a while to come out.  I'm working on this with Tino (Knoodn), creator of the amazingly awesome UNGA needs MUMBA; he's doing the programming and graphics, I'm doing the writing, game design and voice acting.   Both of us are working on other, bigger projects at the moment so this one is going to take a while to come out... but we're steadily working on it.  Music is being provided by the frighteningly talented KingSeamus (http://www.kingseamus.com/).

Troll Song is a little different to most of the other games I'm working on - we're using a 5-verb interface (+Look), the verbs are very specific to a troll.  This isn't a game about dumb brutes... okay the trolls may not speak very eloquently or be extremely intelligent, but they have a definite culture and code of conduct.  (I've always felt that trolls have been dealt an extremely harsh hand in literature!)  This episodic game series gives them a whole new mythology, a creation mythos, and despite their strength and size, a very dangerous enemy...

We're only actually developed one location so far, but it is a rather large location containing a number of puzzles.  Here are some screenshots:

In Troll Song Episode 1: Completely Stoned you play as Clod, a troll who along with all the other trolls has been overpowered by a mysterious force and locked away inside a mountain, trapped by strange devices that are slowly turning them back into inanimate stone.  A freak avalanche opens up a hole into the area Clod is being held, and this reverses the process slightly - enough for him to free himself properly, save his troll brothers and start to find out who their enemy is?  That part's up to you...  As you can partially see from the screenshots, being turned to stone has left Clod a little short of abilities... before you can hope to escape, you'll need to regain your strength and get those abilities back.  (Okay I admit it, this was largely inspired by the part in Zak McKraken where you got locked in a cell by the alien mindbenders and were left with only the Walk verb active until slowly the rest returned!)

I'll post more information on this thread of course and you can also keep tabs on the game at http://www.troll-song.com/.  Once we've got a little further into development I'll probably be looking for some beta testers.  We're hoping to give this game a unique look and feel, and I think we're along the right lines so far.

General Discussion / Star Wars: Detours

I found this completely by chance, now I'm definitely going to look out for it - has the potential to be hilarious!  It's an animated parody of... well, you know what of... and from the clips released so far it looks very funny.  Definitely seems worth keeping an eye out for!

Recruitment / [HELP FOUND]

POSITION NOW FILLED, please lock this thread.  Thanks.

"Searching for Sam and Max" is a freeware game in development - it's not strictly speaking a S&M game, but rather a homage to the dynamic duo - who are missing and need to be rescued by Richie, the player character.  Richie has taken up the Freelance Police mantle since they went missing, but now the Commissioner is in trouble and has issued Richie his most challenging assignment - FIND SAM AND MAX!

We (FrankT, Geork and myself) are looking for a background artist who can produce 320x200 resolution backgrounds in a similar style to the original "Sam and Max Hit the Road" game - anything along similar lines will work for us.  If you think you can help (sorry this is an unpaid position as the game will be freeware) please PM me citing examples of your work.

The demo version of Captain Disaster in Death Has A Million Stomping Boots has now gone live:

http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/Games.aspx/Detail/1598

There will be the odd change in this part of the game in the final full game release, but this gives you a good idea of what the full game is like.  We hope you enjoy it!

I'm particularly interested to see how long people take to complete it.  I don't think it's particularly difficult but it should provide a decent amount of playing time - I have a time period in mind that I was aiming for and that I hope we've reached or exceeded for most people; I'd be grateful if some of you could post your completion time to see if my estimate was accurate or not.

I couldn't help wondering whether Renu was in fact an android / replicant of some kind.  Did anyone else get that impression?  (It also occurred that Vince might be having a Philip K. Dick moment and leave us guessing about this for years before finally telling us...)

Or maybe it's just my warped imagination that came up with this idea?!?!

I've seen very little mentioned anywhere about Deep Silver's game Lost Horizon.  I just wondered if anyone else on the boards here are fans of the game - to me they got pretty much everything right about the game (the only criticism I could really level at it is that's it's a bit too easy); Secret Files 1 & 2 had major faults (illogical puzzles, terrible voice acting - at least in the English version), but both of these were corrected in Lost Horizon.  I have to admit that the main character who seemed like a cross between Indiana Jones and Jake Cutter did appeal to me too!

So, yeah... anyone else love it (or not)?  I just feel it's a shame that this game (to me definitely one of the best adventure games in the 21st century) seems to have gone largely unnoticed.

This is a general question, although if we decide to do a fundraiser for the Captain Disaster game then obviously we'll try to take any points brought up here into account.

I think it's a given that the majority of people who back a game financially on Kickstarter, IndieGoGo et all use it effectively as a pre-order system.  Which is great, but what other things do you like to see as options in a fundraiser - access to beta versions?  The possibly of your name as an Executive Producer of the game? the chance to be involved in the game design process - even if it's in a very small way, such as naming a character that appears in the game?  Those are all things I've seen, along with other things like meeting the game creators, game-related merchandising etc, but I wonder if there's anything that particularly attracts you to a project, or something that you'd love to see offered but never have.

General Discussion / I released a new ebook...
Wed 13/06/2012 10:34:38
In preparation for releasing the public demo of Captain Disaster in Death Has a Million Stomping Feet, I've also re-edited my original short stories featuring the character, reformatted them to make them more ereader friendly, and included a short essay on the process of taking the character out of the realm of short fiction and into a point and click adventure game.  The stories are comedy science fiction with a lot of parody, manic wordplay and general silliness - I wrote the first episode back in 1997 I think, can't remember when the 11th and (so far) final episode was written.

For those interested, it costs £0.99 and can be found here.

Adventure Related Talk & Chat / Narrator voice
Thu 17/05/2012 12:37:31
Just getting opinion as it will influence what we decide to do on a project at the moment...

If in a game the characters' speech is all voiced, do you generally prefer EVERYTHING to be voices - object interactions, looking at objects etc?

The two main ways of doing this are having a narrator (a la King's Quest) or having the player character describe everything in the first-person.  Personally I would tend to prefer the latter, although a large part of that is because I really disliked the narrator voice in The Silver Lining games.

Also, would you think it was actually odd for the characters to talk, but for you to be expected to read descriptions etc?

I'm looking for someone who can sound reasonably like Orac from Blake's 7 - not an exact imitation, just matching the snidy and generally unhelpful attitude.  It's to voice an on-board computer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoHkaFDTiD8&feature=relmfu - 0:54-1:00 as an example of the type of voice.  The character will appear in theoretically 11 or more episodes.

Please PM me if you're interested.

**I've had a couple of people contact me so the position here is filled, but if you want to be considered for another character in the future feel free to contact me anyway **

I'm running a competition to win the entire Blackwell collection (via Steam keys) - I've got 3 sets of keys to give, only one entrant so far (winners chosen at random), so as things stand anyone has a pretty reasonable chance of getting their hands on a copy!

Winners chosen on 1st February.

Ah yes, now I remember.  The next writing competition theme is:

Write a story in the style of a text adventure - story can be about anything, but MUST INCLUDE THE PLAYER SOLVING A PUZZLE.

So, for instance, you might have the player as a very small creature trying to understand something in the human world... an obstacle to get past, etc.

No limitations on the parser, you can be as creative as you like.

>Speak Esperanto to Deranged Goldfish and ask him to Use Tail to Hit Errant Entomologist.

Competition runs till 6th January 2012.  Get writing!

(Will post trophies when I've come up with something decent... given my lack of artistic talent, this may take some time...)
