Critics' Lounge / My first 3D scene!!
Sun 25/09/2005 20:40:47
Well, this is by no means any indication that for some reason I've got off my arse to work on my game.  But I recently got Art of Illusion, and after reading some basic tutorials on getting the bugger to work, I decided to make a simple 3D scene.

So I decided to remake this scene:

In 3D.

The result was fairly pleasing.

General Discussion / My GCSE results.
Thu 25/08/2005 12:07:08
They're the thing that put the DS on hold and have made me feel sick for the past 2 months of horrible waiting.

Today, almost every post year 11 in the country got their results back.

Here are mine: (Man, that was dramatic)

English                            A
English Lit                       A
ICT                                  B
History                            B
DT Graphics                     B
RE (P&E)                          B
Science Dbl Award           C C
Maths                              C
Art                                   D (I was a little lazy in this one, plus the class was full of retarded chavs)

Anyone else want to share their GCSE or A level results?

Critics' Lounge / New Darksiders BG

I'm sorry, I tried to use brushes instead of tacky lights, I JUST COULDN'T HELP MYSELF exam stress see?

I'm stir crazy.  As is the fact that this background is lopsided.  All will be explained.

Anyway, this is a "sea" front gentlemens club, where it is said they enjoy a nice Portaltron DimenlinkTM  to the real world to do some "hilarious" hauntings.

These evenings usually end badly, with a ghost hunter making yet another book about the ghost of the Lemmington Spa public baths.

Well, I'm taking my GCSE's at the moment, and thankfully, they're nearly over.

But they have not been as bad as made out.  And with only two left, The Darksiders can get back in swing.

But, I pose the question.

What have you been built up and built up to do as if it was some really hard thing, only to find it was easier than Red Faction 2....

General Discussion / Movies Based on Games
Sun 30/01/2005 18:28:16
I'm sick of this, when a movie company comes up thinking "I know, lets make a movie out of a game" most people would rejoice at the thought of their favourite game being made into a movie.  I was one, until it happened.

Resident Evil

Now, I didn't think the movie was that bad, in fact I quite liked it, as an action movie.  But I think that it could have been so much more than a random action movie.  They could have made it into a chilling thriller.  It was a waste of what could have been a good license.

All of a sudden, its a trend, to take classic games, and smear their names in shit.  Final Fantasy was such a huge disapointment to me, I wanted depth, I wanted character development, I wanted MAGIC!!  But no, all we got was a fettid lump of a Sci Fi story that didn't even deserve the Fantasy part of the name.  Now I hear of them making a Far Cry movie, directed by the same guy who did Alone in The Dark, and House of The Dead.

Suffice to say, the acting was bad enough in Far Cry.  Without a talentless director telling second rate actors what to do.

Oh looky here, a Doom movie, that's going to be good isn't it?  No, I'm afraid without even seeing it, we all know its gonna suck.  Yet Doom is considered the best FPS ever, why make it into what could be the worse film ever?

Who knows what's next?  Pac Man, thats a classic?  Oh, I know, a Mario movie.

Face it Hollywood, games dont make good movies!  Except for Pokemon THAT ROCKED!!

General Discussion / Anime
Tue 18/01/2005 19:16:54
Well, anyone who may have had the godlike delight of speaking to me on MSN may have descovered I'm starting to like anime, especially the films.

Start Article.

I saw Akira recently after taking a huge gamble and buying the DVD.  I'd seen a few Anime films before, notably Ghost in the Shell and Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust (I've descovered, these films take a lot of attention to understand the ending).  Well, I really enjoyed Akira, I thought sometimes the dub was painfully bad, even the new redub was pretty bad.

Alot of people say, after watching Pokemon, think the Japanese can't animate very well.  I used to think that, backgrounds would be static except for the central characters on many of the animes I saw.

After seeing my first REAL anime film, which was Ghost In The Shell.  My opinion changed.  I saw the intro, and the main characters hair flowing smoothly in the wind while the lights behind her wavered and moved, it was a far cry from the shit fed to those american kids and their UGO or Pokemon cards, it was art.  Even after seeing the 1988 Akira, it was much better than what I was used to.  Seeing the painstaking attention to detail of the backgrounds, then painted by hand, was something I paused the DVD a few times to take in (and sketch for my Art coursework).

It pisses me off more than anything when people see me drawing anime characters at school, or reading a manga, and saying something stupid like "Why you still into drawing Pokemon?" or "Why are you reading a kids comic?" when I'm reading Cowboy Bebop or something.

I think more people should be aware of how anime is much more than the badly dubbed, heavily marketed world of kids crazes.  Akira is a great film as I'm sure anyone whos seen it would agree, it raises so many issues relevant today (plus its ultravoilent) and has some amazing action scenes.  I'd urge you to at least see a recommended Anime film before criticising it, because thats what I used to do, and I missed out on alot.

So, I just wanted to know your opinions on Anime and Manga.

Ok, heres the deal, I REALLY want to get a scanner, thus making work on the Darksiders more easy, (scanning in nice hand drawn pics, then making them into Graphics by easy tracing over etc).  But my parents aren't sure, I need to convince them.  This may seem like a really stupid request, but can you guys just post saying how much use a scanner is.  I show the thread to my parents and BAM, it will help sway them...

General Discussion / THEY CUT MY HAIR
Fri 19/11/2004 20:55:14
The bastards!!
They cut my fringe.
I loved my long hair, but not it just looks like some poppy trash head from the 70's.
I f*cking hate it!
My dad kept saying, "Everyone thinks it looks stupid" which was lie, and even if they did, I wouldn't have gave a shit if I'd liked it.
And this new look, I dont like at all.
I just wanna grow it all back now....

Ok, so messing around doodling, I drew up some pretty cool new character concepts for The Darksiders.
So I tried to see if I could convey them into CG.
So heres Idalo, as he will be!

Critique my naffness!!

Critics' Lounge / Trying out new ways....
Sun 07/11/2004 17:25:08
Ok I tried out some new ways of drawing backgrounds, and I came up with this version of my original office drawing, despite taking a hell of a long time to do, it looks naff compared to the orig:
New (with only one tacky lighting effect!)

After lending my copy of CMI to a friend what seems like aeons ago, I never got it back, I really should, but I keep forgetting to press the question to him when I see him.
Anyway, I've looked everywhere for the old MI games 1-3 and I can't get them anywhere, except illegally off the internet, which is not something I really want to do.

They've made Beneath a Steel Sky freeware, why not let us have some more of the golden oldies that you just can't get in computer stores nowdays?  It would get more people who regulary visit freeware sites into the genre and maybe boost interest enough to make the "market" big enough for anothe adventure game.

This is a new person, it supposed to be a member of the undead police forces night watch service, but this guy acts as a guide that leads new souls to the nearby harbour town.

Tell me what you think, this is the style I've chose for the characters.

Critics' Lounge / Hellport Docks
Thu 26/08/2004 22:28:36
Here are some docks that the ship (See Darksiders thread in Production forum) drops you off in, I really need some criticisms on the lighting and the lake of fire seen in the background please..

Oh and if you're wondering why its on a sort of slant, The underworld is a very twisted place.
