The demo is of an very old build and it has about nothing to do with the current game we're working on - everything has changed :>

Progress is still made, some animations getting done and alot of code being written by Electroshokker.
So thanks for all the comments so far! We're getting closer :>

Ah yes! I forgoth it - so busy at school right now.

Im still busy, got a deadline tomorrow so I wont write any crit, sorry about that.

I will declare Ben as winner - mostly for his idea and imaginative description of the character(the first entry)
With SPC as close up for his nice execution if the sprite.
Not to forget bog and ghost, also good ideas and execution!

Anyway, congratz to ben.

Good entries all!

Ill declare a winner tomorrow(sorry for saying that it would be a voting, old BG blitz-habbits) :)
Unless someone asks for a extension of time any time soon.

good work all so far! :>

Sprite Jam - Classical [ends 24th]

Make a character and incorporate something classical, its up to you what you think is classical - it can be the classical suite, a character from a classical film etc.

Restriction: As long as its workable with AGS, and is reasonable to animate(any kind, pixel, hand drawn, cut-out)

Ill start the voting the 24th of February, unless someone asks for extension.

Good luck and have fun! :)

Thanks! Good work everybody who participated.
Ill start a new one asap

Sorry, Misj, but now I think Ill need to make nasty things(hold that thought, you) to you for two reason - one being that you used my background and the second for doing an awesome sprite :)

Its Sam and Max, freelance po.... vikings?

This is my interpretation of Sam and Max, and for the theme they're back to the vikings age. (dont worry, Max is a natural blonde, so no chemicals were used)

As for the techincal part: I went for a cellshade since that should be acceptable I think, Some things might need to be simplify to make in animateable (like the belt) wihtout the animator pulling his hair(unless you go for cutout animation).

(Max is suppose to be a valkyria - explaining the hair) :)

Theme: Opposites

Try to get two opposites in to the background. This is practically done by itself when making a piece of art, but try to be creative about it! :)
It can be opposing objects like statues of god and devil, it can be a some attribute of the background like opposing colors, it can basicly be anything.

I realise its a busy time for many people, I hope there will be entries anyway - and for extension of time you can priv-message me.

---------------------------------------------------------

Voting starts 4th Jan 2009, unless more time is requested.
The voting will be done in these categories:

Idea - The underlying idea to the background. Doesn't
necessarily have to coincide perfectly with the theme of the
week, just strike you as interesting/amusing/inspiring; a place
you'd really enjoy visiting within a game.

Atmosphere - How well the image manages to evoke a certain feeling or mood.

Design - How well the elements in the image are designed,
such as landscapes, buildings, decorations, clouds, doorknobs,
etc.

Composition - How well the elements in the image work
together/are positioned in relation to each other.

Functionality - How well it would work when adding sprites,
including appropriate walking distances, a good angle for
character sprites, clever walkway solutions, easily understood
exits, etc.

Technique - How well the ideas are executed in form of
rendering.

Good luck!

Not to go totally off topic, but I would like to say my opinion on this(not pointed to anyone particular person).

Resolution doesnt make art better IMO, it doesnt even has to resemble anything(but it probably helps in this kind of game, but sure doesnt have to).
It doesnt mater how how much details, "hip" character or beautiful colors you have put in your painting, if the , for an example, composition isnt good, then its simply not. May it be modern abstract art or 3D renders - they're still on a flat surface and both has to consider the same picture-problems (composition, color, rythm, shapes, lines, edges etc etc.)

Thats why pixel art can be as much or more pleasing then a 5x5m Paul Rubens painting if its in the hand of a great artist(although its hard, since Rubens is awesome) ;)
Just head over to pixel-joint and look at the awesome people there, like Fool, helm and bulrogh.
I would also think that its the same with "styles", just because its cartoon it doesnt mean you have less problems then an artist painting realism, maybe some diffrent problems as "interesting shapes" vs "rendering".
This why I think many in my school with high 3D/maya knowledge still doesnt make good work, sure they can try to hide it with fancy stuff - but it only takes you so far. But those with strong artistic knowledge makes really great stuff, eventhough they just started with 3D this term - atleast thats my opinion, but it seems to be the general opinion in the school too.

So watch out for  judgments or prejudice, great art is always great art - no mather resolution, style or medium  :)
Thats my current opinion on the whole, if its a "big" topic, Ill gladly would discuss this more in another topic, if anyone feels like it.

(sorry for off topic, and bad english)

Save the trapped Princess - knight attraction!

The dream for all the knights climbing up their profession ladder.
Buy a ticket and you will have the opportunity to rescue the trapped princess from the tower. But be aware of the dragon!

My idea was the principle of an roller coaster or something where you buy the ticket and take the ride, but instead you buy a ticket and get to rescue the princess(if you manage to) who has been trapped in the tower. You would of course need to turn her back so the next knight can have a try.
The setting/mood is kinda unmotivated, it was just from a Thomas Cole painting which I wanted to try. It was done in two days.

yea, I have also started doing some sketching, I wont promise Ill be finnished to sunday, but I think I will have something to show.
#238
Yea, I think no voting is fine - since its purpose was mostly to choose the next person to take over the blitz as in old traditional BG blitz fashion.

My last will be my final for now, I havent gotten time to work on it since new school and moving etc.

But I liked it, regardless of what others say.

Is anyone else disappointed that despite some variations in art style, all the contributions have chosen pretty similar depictions of the motif? I particular, all the houses look very much alike (Misj's being probably the most different). Usually in the Background Blitzes we get widely divergent contributions. This time around, everyone seems to be working not only on the same scene, but from the same sensibility.

The original instructions just mention a "run-down house", so that ought to leave quite a bit of room for variation. What made everyone go with this particular look? Is it just a matter of people imitating loominous? (That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but personally I get a bit tired of all that old-timey-ness.)

I should also say that I think this Blitz has been a great course in background creation, and will certainly be a great resource, frequently referenced, for a long time to come.
Well, personaly its just a matter of taste for me, I like the medieval architecture style. Im not sure exactly what you mean by "same sensibility", could you explain?
I don't see why anyone should be disappointed since I think everyone who took a part of this learned something(and maybe some who didnt participated). Like Neil Dnuma said, Im mostly disappointed about the low number of participants.

I dont think perspective is of an importance, if you get down a good composition that wont be a problem(anyone played monkey island3? or Day of the tentacle?), even if you're going for "dark comedy" I think its ok

For me an issue is where you cut the picture, the door got cut in the middle. While I worked on the edit I felt I just wanted the side of the house to show also, to get some sense of how big it is. You can add some variation to the stone-wall and grass/road edge too. Same with the foreground element, make it uneven(I failed at this).

Heres a rough edit:

I hope it helps some
