Messages - Darth Mandarb

Han was not a hero (at this point).  He was a smuggler, a "scoundrel" and a shady character.

The incident with Greedo was the defining moment of Han's character.  He knew Greedo intended to shoot him, so he killed him first.  It's a tough galaxy out there!!

He further builds his "scoundrel" reputation by his actions for the rest of the film; "Better her than me" or "I'm in it for the money".  You never really expect him to come to the rescue at the film's climax.  It makes that final moment far more powerful/dramatic.  I think people don't see this 'cause EVERYbody has seen Star Wars and they know Han Solo as Han Solo the Hero of the Galaxy Far Far Away!!  But when Star Wars first came out you didn't know that!

That might be one of the reasons Lucas decided to have Greedo shoot first.  I don't know (nor care) but I just want my scoundrel back!!

edit - Anian said basically the same thing while I was typing this up!!

I could care less about labels like "mainstream" or "indie" blah blah blah ... it's all nonsense to me.  If I enjoy a game I don't care what anybody else considers it!

Having said that I don't play many video games really but I am drooling for Uncharted 3!  I have played the shit out of the first two and haven't had the kind of love for a game since the mid-90s.  I suppose it could be argued that they are, essentially, adventure games with some run-n-gun mixed in but, again, I don't care to label it as long as I enjoy it (which I do).

I don't know why so many people say "mainstream" like it's a bad word though?  These big game companies are in the business of making money and they deliver games the majority of their audiences want.  To me it's logical.  It's obviously working or they'd not keep making them... so obviously people want these games!  Sure this mass-production-of-generic-games might stifle some innovation but imagine if every game that came out tried to innovate?  Scratch that... if every game being made tried to be innovative very few games would actually come out!

I think [we] adventure gamers are a bit more selective but we're also fans of a dead genre...

Quote from: Chicky on Wed 31/08/2011 14:37:11Why would anyone buy this crap? (I'm looking at you Darth  ;)) Sure, I'd love to have Star Wars on Blu-ray but it's not Star Wars anymore!

I don't mind most of the stuff added into the special editions (with the exception of Greedo shooting first) so if that's removed I would like to have the OT (though it's not technically "original") in 1080p glory!

I will, of course, be buying the Blu-ray set when it's available, however... I'm not happy that even though it's something like 9 discs he STILL isn't including the pre-special edition original trilogy that so many of us grew up with and love and want!!

I've seen most of the "new" footage already.  Some of it seems pretty cool (from the original trilogy at least) and some just seems like fluff to me (mostly the prequel stuff which I don't really care about... I didn't 'hate' them but to me star wars remains the first three films made).

I'm curious about some of the added scenes I've heard rumors about (not going to post spoilers).

Also I really, really, really, really, REALLY hope he takes out Greedo shooting first.

A lot of the other shit he added with the special editions I could cope with but Greedo shooting first 100% absolutely RUINS the character of Han Solo.

Well this is a first...

Davostros - please review this board's (and all other boards) "rules" threads before posting in them.

technocrat - as with your other necromanced thread; if/when you want to post an update let me know.

Can't express enough how bummed I am to have missed another [apparently awesome] Mittens!  Glad you all had a great time!

Quote from: Pumaman on Mon 29/08/2011 17:27:21I had a brilliant week -- see you all next year, at Mittens West Coast US!

Speaking of... I mentioned it on Mark's facebook, but if nobody has been decided/voted/picked I'd like to volunteer to host next years' Mittens West Coast (though my idea of west coast would be somewhere up near Seattle).  Personally I was thinking more "middle america" like Colarado (so we could day-trip to the grand canyon, hoover-dam, pike's peak, etc).

Anyway... just throwin' that out there!  Welcome home Mitteneers!

Mngwa - Did you wait until this was just past 90 days to necro-post/break the rules?

Technocrat - let me know if/when you want to post an update and I'll unlock this!

Unlocked by request!

Guys... seriously, you're all wasting your breath with the "do it this way" or "please just do this".  It's valid advice (don't get me wrong) but you're just pissin' in the wind for all the good it will do.

It's ironic 'cause I'm wasting my breath saying "stop the advice" because it'll just continue (and continue to be ignored) but hey, too much more and I'm locking this thread so it's really a win/win for me.

But I have to be Sith/Moderator here... STOP WITH THE OFF-TOPIC and/or advice-giving-insult-making posts!!  This thread deserves a chance to be locked 'cause of the author, not because of the rest of us!!

Congrats on finishing your game!

Arden's Vale - in the Completed Games board.

You might want to update your first post with this link as well (just a suggestion) :)

I have unlocked this ... any more nonsense and the Sith will strike back!

Quote from: Studio3 on Wed 17/08/2011 20:54:06You do realize that the rules state that there must be at least two in game screenshots however it never said it matter what room it was taking in. I am aware that there are two shots taken in the same room however they are both taken at different times. I included the menu shot because it was cool looking to me. I will update it possibly today if I can however if you don't want anyone to post screenshots of the same room then you should really say that. Cause as far as I see it I did follow the rules.

I do not think you could have proven my point more perfectly even had you been intentionally trying to.

Quote from: Studio3 on Wed 17/08/2011 20:54:06Cause as far as I see it I did follow the rules.

You see it wrong.

Quote from: Nikolas on Wed 17/08/2011 21:43:22Nooooooooooooo

Quote from: Snarky on Wed 17/08/2011 21:12:25You broke Darth!  :'(

To everybody else; I'm not "broke" at all! I made a judgement call to not lock the thread because while there is only 1 actual screenshot there is a menu screen and some kind of ... sprite? ... represented.  I've been lenient on that before with others.  What I am not lenient on is off-topic ramblings cluttering up GiP threads!

On that ^ note... any more off-topic-ness will give me what I need to lock this thread so, by all means, keep it coming.
#1332
You do realize that one of your screens is a menu screen (doesn't count as 1 of the 2 needed) and the other two are the same screenshot?  How hard is it to follow simple rules?

You know what?  Just do whatever you want.  No matter the rules or the [endless] advice/council you've been given you've proven time and again you're not going to heed it and just do it your own way.

Just know when it gets out of hand this thread will be locked.

bunny-gypsie - please read the Forum Rules before digging up any more threads.

ben - if/when you want to update the thread send me a PM and I'll re-open it!
#1334
Suggestions:
1) read the sticky threads/forum rules before posting (this is the wrong forum)
2) The Need Help With Your Game Thread is probably a good place to start

Good luck.
#1335
I knew this was going to happen... this is NOT the Critics Lounge!  Keep the C&C out of here (it just will clutter up the thread).  Author(s), if you want C&C please post in the critics lounge instead.

Quote from: Ponch on Fri 05/08/2011 00:00:23Firefly / Serenity would make a good, sandbox setting.

I actually started to work on this a few years ago... had sprited up the main characters too:

Miez and I (at Mittens 2008) discussed the future potential of collaborating on it!  I'd still love to do it at some point!

Quote from: NickyNyce on Thu 04/08/2011 16:18:51As for a game, it does set up perfectly, Crazy characters, death scenes, where am I story line, puzzles galore to progress through the cubes....Darth Mandarb is on to something.
Yup!  And the backgrounds could all, essentially, fit into a 'template' if you will so the production time would be decreased!  Just change some colors and a few details here and there and you have a new screen.  Throw in some clever puzzles and some gore and voila!
#1337
You should update the first post to include that montage image so people don't have to search the entire thread for it!  Just a a suggestion (not required by the rules!).
#1338
So happy to hear it man!  Congrats!

Quote from: Ali on Fri 29/07/2011 13:58:25>USE RUG
How do you want to use the rug?
> TIE ROOM TOGETHER

Haha you actually hit the nail RIGHT on the head!  I had, loosely, written a scene where a room was actually falling apart and the puzzle's solution was to use a rug to "tie the room together" to keep it from falling apart (I hadn't worked out the specifics on why the room was falling in half, but I was leaning towards an earthquake).  I had planned to use that phrase nowhere else in the game (and not even at that part) so it would be a silent "easter egg" for true fans!

Quote from: Stupot+ on Thu 28/07/2011 22:39:03I think 'The Hangover' is a great concept for an Adventure game.

Totally agree!  I had the same notion after watching the movie.  In a similar vein your best friend is 'missing' and you have no idea what happened the night before so you set off to find him!  I was imagining it in a Leisure Suit Larry type setting.

I also think Moon would be an interesting game (love the movie) but yes, you'd have to take serious liberties with the story to make it work in an adventure setting.

I've always thought the movie Cube would make for an interesting game as well (even though the movie wasn't all that great).  The backgrounds would be a snap to create and each room you must solve progressively harder and more complicated puzzles to find the way out.

While not strictly based on a specific movie... I actually (quite a few years back) started working on a game called "The Little Lebowski" (if you can't figure out the movie that's based on...).  It takes place in 1999 and The Dude and Maude's kid (the little lebowski) has gone missing and the Dude puts on his detective's cap again to go in search of his missing kid (very complicated case).  Walter, of course, is by the Dude's side to help him and he's obsessed with Y2K (but the Dude doesn't really mind as Vietnam is no longer the obsession).  The Ghost of Donnie appears to the Dude (after he's had a few white russians and smoked a bit) and helps him along as well!  I actually have a script/story of it on a hard-drive somewhere. I still intend to make it someday!
