Han was not a hero (at this point). He was a smuggler, a "scoundrel" and a shady character.
The incident with Greedo was the defining moment of Han's character. He knew Greedo intended to shoot him, so he killed him first. It's a tough galaxy out there!!
He further builds his "scoundrel" reputation by his actions for the rest of the film; "Better her than me" or "I'm in it for the money". You never really expect him to come to the rescue at the film's climax. It makes that final moment far more powerful/dramatic. I think people don't see this 'cause EVERYbody has seen Star Wars and they know Han Solo as Han Solo the Hero of the Galaxy Far Far Away!! But when Star Wars first came out you didn't know that!
That might be one of the reasons Lucas decided to have Greedo shoot first. I don't know (nor care) but I just want my scoundrel back!!
