Haha yeah...

I just went back and re-played Space Quest 1-3. It's such a great nostalgic feeling. I can actually smell the house and hear Bon Jovi (et al) when I play those old games. Transportive.

If somebody finds a way to bottle that nostalgia they'll be extremely wealthy overnight!

Quote from: LimpingFish on Wed 01/06/2022 21:17:47I'm not sure if it's a nostalgia thing, though. As a child, I did my adventuring on an Atari ST. The ST had a display comparable to EGA, using 16 colours (from a palette of 512), and a 320x200 resolution, so the ST and EGA versions of a game looked fairly similar.

It's definitely a nostalgia thing for me! I love the EGA color palette!

I actually feel that most of the VGA versions of Loom lose a lot of the charm and character they had in the EGA versions. The colors feel dull and washed out on most of them and lack the vibrancy that made Loom (EGA) so great and memorable!

Last year I wanted to see if I could master the 16 colors so I started by doing some paint-overs of several Space Quest 3 backgrounds (in my opinion it was around the SQ3 era when digital artists had really sunk their teeth into EGA and were creating some great works). By the time I was "done" (are we ever really done?) I had done maybe 10 or so paint-overs. I really got a feel for stretching those colors to the max!

Years ago I registered the domain kidsafe.app for an idea I had to make a crow-sourced "parental guidance" type app which parents could use to find games (video, board), movies, tv shows, etc. that were generally considered safe for kids (as voted on by parents). I never got past mocking up some design ideas (and I let the domain lapse) but this thread makes me think maybe it was worth building and I might dust off the idea now...

chaiavi - Hello! This thread hadn't been posted to in almost six years! Please review the forum rules before you dig up any more old threads! Thanks!

Leisure Suit Harry - Let me know if you want to post an update (if you're still working on this) and I can unlock it (the screenshots in the first post are dead so make sure, if you do want to update, that you fix those links!)

Congrats on the release!

You might want to update the first post with a link to the Completed Games thread (nod)

DO NOT dig up old threads!!
If you're interested in an old thread* about a project don't post asking about the progress.  Send a PM to the game's author.  If the project has been cancelled and/or abandoned there's no point in bumping the thread!

* Old Threads are threads that have been inactive for near to over 90 days (3 months).

Honza - if/when you want to post an update let me know and I will unlock the thread!

Sierra Online is proud to announce:

Space Quest III - The Pirates of Pestulon

The Story:

Roger is laying undisturbed in the sleepchamber of his escape pod after his second Space Quest adventure. His path crosses a robotic freighter, which has no regard for life forms. The pod is taken onboard, considered nothing more but a piece of trash. After the pod is dumped in the freighter, Roger wakes up!

He soon realizes that staying in this freighter won't help him. And please note that this is a deep thought for Roger! Anyway ... he must escape from the freighter and then, the adventure really begins.

Some screenshots:

Development Progress:

Story: 100%
Scripting: 75%
Graphics: 100%
Sound/Music: 25%

Expected completion date: February 2026

Development Diary:

2 new backgrounds completed.  Scripting is moving along nicely.  Shouldn't have trouble meeting the deadline.

We (the moderators) are having a discussion about this very thing (using social media links as updates rather than post the update here).

For the time being, while not [yet] required by the rules, it would be helpful if you could post the update to this thread (just edit your last post) so those of us who refuse/don't use Twitter (et al) can still see/follow the game's development?

Thanks!

This is fantastic!

Thanks for sharing (and good to "see" you again old friend)!

I still want to make that Firefly game someday...

I can see that you added the screenshots but they aren't loading for me.

The first image (hosted on img.itch.zone) is loading in fine but the ones from toxictuba.com are not (devtools saying "net::ERR_CERT_AUTHORITY_INVALID").

I'm guessing your server doesn't allow remote links like that.

Either way, please find a way to make 'em show up in here!

Oh and good luck with the game's production!

A few decades ago (or it was last year?)... time has no meaning anymore.

Anyway... I dabbled with photogrammetry using Meshroom and my DSLR.

It wasn't overly complicated and the results were really quite stunning. Discounting Meshroom's processing time it took very little time for me to get my models into Blender.

I haven't gotten back to it in awhile but my intention is to "scan" in my old GIJoe and Star Wars toys, 3D print them, and make toys for my kids (they love my old toys but I'm hesitant to let them play with them as they are old (like me) and are more fragile than they used to be). Bright and even lighting is the key (to avoid shadows in the texture maps). I want to build a custom capture rig to control the lighting and position of the camera. Shouldn't be too hard.

I did try the 3D scanner app (on Android) but I found that while it worked quite well on larger objects the smaller objects were not possible to capture with enough clarity for what I wanted to do.

Still the fact that we can do that with a phone is mind-blowing.

edit
I forgot to mention that when I experimented I put an object on a turn-table thing and meshroom had a very hard time with it because the camera was still and only the object was rotating (so the background stayed the same) and I think that confused it. I think the key is moving the camera around the object so I intend to build an enclosure with specific "markers" on the walls so the software can track it easier. I suspect it probably is similar with 3D scanning apps on phones as well!

General Discussion / Re: Windows 11
Thu 28/10/2021 20:15:03
Windows 10 is solid (has passed XP as my favorite Windows version) so I wouldn't update to 11 just yet.

My method is to wait a few months (even a year) into an OS version's life-cycle before I pull the trigger and upgrade.

That way the bugs/kinks are worked out before I start using it and then I don't have to deal with all the frustrations (drivers, patches, security leaks, etc).

Quote from: selmiak on Mon 25/10/2021 16:32:15use linux!

In an ideal world...

I would love to make that jump but I have too much software that still doesn't play nice with linux and I have to jump through too many hoops to get everything working.

Just isn't worth the hassle!

It gets better every year though so I figure when I retire professionally it might be ready :D
