Vel and I tried to do this very thing with the freeware version of Shivah.  During the final fight scene, Vel had this neat idea to add extra layers to a music track as the hero got closer to victory, and to remove them as he got further away.  Unfortunately, I could never get it to work.  The tracks would never synch up properly, and even cross fading sounded weird and wrong.  So we scrapped the whole idea.  A shame, really, since Vel put all that work in.

Hehehe.  I WISH, Niklaus. :)  The game's gotten a ton of publicity but it usually amounts to a small flurry of sales followed by the standard 1-2 a day.  The fact that the game was originally freeware contributed big to this, since over 10,000 people played the game for free.  Had even 5% of that number purchased the game, I'd be much better off. ;)

The fact that people are actually pre-ordering BL has given me some renewed confidence, and the small press BL has generated has brought more people to the site, who are then presented with Shivah, etc.  It's my hope that each subsequent release will help market the previous releases, but only time will tell.

Marlamoe:  Thanks!  I can't stand looking at that video now, as every stupid twitch and stammer stabs at my gut like a neurotic dagger.  I watch it and think, "You could have gotten a haircut, you slob.  Stop smacking your lips!  Do you have to say 'um' or 'ah' every other word? Bleh, you're a disgrace."

How funny.  I was just at an IGDA meeting and saw Greg Costikyan of Manifesto speak on a panel.  Thanks for the image, LimpingFish.

Doodled these guys in msPaint one day in 2002.  They eventually turned into Joey and Rosa from BoE/Blackwell Legacy.

Sad to say that my skills haven't improved much since those days.

Awesome!  My game has lots of ghosts in it, so this will definitely come in handy.

Site's been updated with a new design.  It's nice and CMS-ified now.  Three cheers for Klaus, who offered to help me and did an amazing job.

Just got a new website up to showcase Blackwell and my other games.  Check it out at http://www.wadjeteyegames.com.  You can read a bit more about the game, read a bit more about the characters, learn about the actors who are playing Rosa and Joey, and download a free Blackwell Legacy desktop background.

Enjoy.

Ikari: A downloadable version? Oh course!

Re voice acting:  This is one of those games that have many more female roles than male.  All the male roles have been cast (Abe Goldfarb, who played Rabbi Stone, is now voicing Joey), but I am still in the market for lady voices. If any ladies out there want to try voice acting and have decent microphones, drop me a line.

Re going commercial:  Why go commercial?  Why not?

Re scary Joey: He scared you? Good. :-D

Re jacket: It's not a jacket.  It's a sweatshirt.  She's wearing two different sets of clothes for each day.  Not only that, she's got different hairstyles!  Revolutionary!

GG: I'm all about setting deadlines.  Without em, I am lost!

As for the cliffhanger endings, don't worry.  The game will not end on a cliffhanger.  Each game will be it's own seperate "case" that will have its own beginning, middle and end.  There are various backstory plot threads that will be told over the course of the series, but the core of each story will be the individual cases that Rosa and Joey work on.

The poster reminds you of the Ben Jordon poster because it was done by the same artist.  Dan Lee is the man.

I updated the original post to include the team members.  Sorry, guys!  I was rushed. :-D

Fanart contest in progress!  See the last post for details!

From the team that brought you The Shivah, now comes:

The Blackwell Legacy is the first case in a miniseries of games that stars a medium named Rosangela Blackwell and her spirit guide Joey Mallone. Their mission, it seems, is to assist tormented spirits and investigate supernatural goings on. They don't understand why they are thrown together, but they do the best they can.

The duo's first case will involve a series of suicides at a local university. Something unnatural has forced these students to kill themselves, and nobody knows why. Rosangela, who is just coming to terms with her new status as a medium, finds herself cast as the unwilling detective in this gruesome mystery.

WE ARE NOW TAKING PRE-ORDERS!!  Plus, for a limited time, you will receive a free Shivah Soundtrack when you pre-order the game.  This offer is limited, so don't be slackin'.

The Blackwell Legacy will be available for purchase on December 23rd, 2006 for $14.99.  Mark your calendars.

For more information, check out our new website at http://www.wadjeteyegames.com

The team:

Writer/coder - Dave Gilbert
Background art - Tom Scary (Dr. Scary)
Sprite art - Ian Schlaepfer (Big Brother)
Concept artist: Matt Gardner
Music - Peter Gresser

In lieu of the recent release delay, here are some more screenshots to taunt you:

Also, one thing to keep in mind is that those other games were originally priced much much higher, and then discounted to $5 over time.  They certainly didn't start OUT at $5.  The Shivah  is starting out at that bargain price, although I doubt I'll be discounting it much lower.  :=

So the character is washed out in room 1, then you go into room 2 and the character is fine?  Posting screenshots of the two versions would be very helpful.
#1738
Hi Gypsysnail,

Does your character look washed out in both rooms?  Or just the one?  Could you post a screenshot of what it looks like?  It might have something to do with your setup settings.

Hm.  Since you all know what a shivah is now, you'll probably get one of my favorite jewish jokes:

A jewish man brings his native american fiance home to meet his mother.
"Pleased to meet you," the fiance says. "My name is Su-ka-tawa, but you can call me Running Water."
"Well," the mother retorts.  "My name is Rosa Epstein, but you can call me sitting shivah!"

It's funny.  Really.

Well if Matt's going, I'm going.
