Right.  I did a version myself, using Flib's pic as a guideline.  I shortened the hat, futzed with the shading, and added a coat.  The floating heads do look a bit strange, true.

Thanks again, everyone.  I'm very happy with this one now.

Happy to oblige, Mr. Flibble!  I love your edits, especially your "sam spade" version of my character. :-D

NEW:

This is a bright, annoyingly optimistic fellow who is always smiling. I'm surprisingly happy with the way he turned out.  Less so with his shading:

He doesn't look shaded so much as UNSHAVEN.  Any ideas are appreciated.

EDIT:  whoops.  forgot his skullcap. :-o

Boom! Shading.

It's a start.  Still trying to go for that "noir/shadowy" look.

Suppose I should have put all of these in one thread.

Thanks flib.  I originally used this as a reference:

She's not traditionally dolled-up in a sari or anything, but I wanted her to have indian features.

I know what you mean about highlighting, but I want to get her "right" before I start shading/highlighting her.  It saves so much time that way.

That nose isn't bad Victor, and definitely looks more natural than my inverted "V".  Actually, I originally intended for the right side of her face to be covered a bit by hair, so she's not turned to the side.  :)  Matt - I love the eyelashes!  An awesome touch!

Critics' Lounge / an indian woman portrait

How many pics can I post in one day?  Here's a character portrait that I've been futzing with over the last few days.  An indian woman, named Rajshree.  I'm trying to keep her expression on the sad-end of neutral.

I'm really unhappy with the nose thus far.  She looks like a Mrs. Potato Head.  I'm trying to make her a bit more attractive.  Not super hot, but somewhere up neat the "nice to look at" level.

Here's my progress thus far:

edit 1: Made the neck slimmer, and adjusted the eyebrows

edit 2: Changed her expression, and lowered the facial features so she's no longer looking "up"

Sweet.  Although I prefered the hairline the way it was before, so I made that change.

Now, to shade!  Fun times.

Great suggestions, Steve!

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by "triangle of underside"?  Could you explain a bit further?

Thanks!

Critics' Lounge / A few characters

Since I'm crazy motivated today, I'm merging some of my WIP threads into one. New character below.

A detective character, unshaded.  His fedora is giving me major trouble.  The bits underneath the brim just look generally awful and wrong.  Any tips are, as always, appreciated.

Greetings!

Thanks for the help, Steve.  I realized that the picture I drew was too big for what i had in mind, so I shrunk it down and applied your shading advice:

I've seen a demo of this, and it is mighty.  Creed and Denzil - get thee to thy computers and don't stop!  The fate of RoN hangs in the balance.  And David Hasselhoff, I suppose.

Better than my usual work, but still... ugh.  Going for a noirish tough-guy shading look.

Any help appreciated.

Wanna use old graphics?  Sure you can, if if you choose THIS set of guidelines. :-D

Thanks, everyone! Seaduck, those reflections are lovely.  It actually looks like metal, now.  Although I agree with BB when he says "titilating." :-D

This would actually help me out a LOT.  I could definitely use it.

Hm.  Good call on the perspective.  That's probably why it was bulging out when I tried shading it.

Any pointers?  I'm happy with the overall composition, but that dome is driving me batty.  Any shading I add to this just turns it into a poorly pixelated pile of poo.  Help is definitely appreciated.

I hate animating. Oh yes I do.

I'll try your suggestions, Saberteeth.  In the meantime, here's my lil bandit throwing a punch.
